Never played alan wake before but when i did i noticed immediately that he wasn't voicing his own character, the reason apparently was because his finnish accent is too noticeable for him to be playing an american but that's back in 2010, from what i see here his voice performance is way better, with that said i really enjoyed his live action performance, a very good actor.

Honestly I wish they had gotten a shared nomination at the Game Awards in 2023. They did such a great job sharing the character of Alan Wake, and at no point in my experience playing it did it feel like two people acting the same character. That cannot be an easy feat.

This just sounds like one of the most difficult acting processes ever. I noticed sometimes that Matt's speech patterns and rhythms resemble Ilka's Finish accent, but not the accent itself (which is a pretty light accent). It's a little jarring sometimes but completely understandable. That must have been VERY difficult for both of them! Ilka's physical performance matches Matthew's emotional delivery perfectly. I think their work is an achievement.

It's crazy to me that they didn't do it the other way around. I thought it would have been easier for Illka to act the Scenes and for Matthew to overdub them than for Illka to act scenes as convincingly as he does to voice lines alone. Crazy stuff.

Ilkka did act the scenes and Matthew did dub on top of it. But since Remedy does facial capture separately, so Ilkka had to lip sync to what Matthew did

Not exactly. Remedy doesn't always has that idea. Back when Max Payne was made or even Alan Wake was made, it was their impression that, at the time, one actor would be the face and another actor would be voice. It has done in some other games and animation. That's why they followed it

Back in 2005 when the first game was being made, Remedy always thought that just like animated movies where one actor gives a voice while the character looks different, they went the same way with the game because that's what used to happen even in games and it also happens to this day. One person will be the face and the other the voice. So if they changed that in the second game it would be odd

Dubbing is different though because its being dubbed in another language. But if a movie is made in English and an actor has been cast to play that role then dubbing that character's voice with someone else's is not right. An actor was chosen to play the entire part. Well that's how it usually happens in games. Most of the time, someone else does motion capture and a voice actor does the voice but in case of this game there is extra layers of Ilkka also doing lip sync to Matthew's audio

No they did the dubbing sort of the last. The entire scene was first recorded and then it was sent to the voice actor who would do the recording based on Ilkka's acting and then that was sent back to Ilkka who would do face capture.
