Alan Watts - Acceptance of Death and Meaning of Life

We have a culture to live life as if to survive and to hush the idea of death, to avoid this topic of discussion. Alan Watts explores this taboo with a different approach, that death and life are like fronts and backs of the same coin. Death gives meaning to life and gives us the opportunity to understand what life is all about

a lot of people compare the experience of psychedelics to be very similar to being a child again, you gain that childlike wonder back. they aren't for everyone though, especially if you have a history in your family of mental illnesses or psychosis.

It's a weird thing life, beautiful. I am 17 and learning more and more about the journey. When my dad passed away last year, i had a sense on why we are here...To be and to create love. Within 5 minutes of my dad passing away i felt a powerful sense of what i can only describe as being love reach inside of me. I stopped crying, and just felt peaceful with this buzz inside my chest. I am so grateful to my higher power for feeling that, so grateful to my dad too. Its made me feel more understanding on the process of life. That one moment, impacted me so much.

this was a very powerful thing to read and it really made me feel what you felt, I can't imagine what its like to lose a parent but I would hope I can deal with it the same way as you when the day does come, I've spent the lat 20 years trying to find my dad and only get to see him once a year at the moment as he's in Canada so I would literally be distraught if that was to happen. hope your doing well now and have learnt many new things about life :)

My dad passed away a year ago, and i can say i felt exactly the same way you described it, he passed away from cancer, and his last couple hours where he was in a state of brain-death, and when he took his final last couple of breaths, i stopped crying and realized that that was his chapter in life, which touched me in a way that, i realized i have to love and embrace all the moments i have with anything and everyone on my journey... A year later since the last reply, i hope matsterness somehow remembers he made a comment on this video with his story, i hope to hear from you, and if not, have a peaceful life, to you, and everyone else reading this comment.

Talhah Khan that’s never gonna happen because that’s not living...you can not have existence without non existence just as you can’t have an up without a down or cold without hot. It’s all a balance from the universe and we are all made up of energy from the universe that’s the real you. You are just experiencing life in a physical form that is not the real you. And that’s the problem us humans have. We have hidden from the fact that our physical body is not the real me or you. We are all one massive ball of energy.

@@mariannecohen7675 Of course there still will be pain. No loss goes without some measure. "Pain is life is inevitable, but suffering is optional." Meaning that of course there's pain occasionally in life, but it is the mental suffering that does not need to be there. Which can make the original suffering greater. "I've experienced a great deal of pain and suffering in my life .... most of which has never happened." ~ Mark Twain By opening your heart and mind to the greater picture. That there are many more people who are going through the exact experience, if not worse, and by refocusing the picture from self to others, your own suffering can be taken care of as a byproduct. I hope that this helps you, and all others, even in a very small way. ~Sent with warm greetings. 😊

Without life there cannot be death, and without death there cannot be life. The point that modern society completely misunderstands is that it is not how you die that is important at all, it is how you lived. So the ultimate consequence of birth, is death, and this transition alone is The Journey of Purpose

The past few days have been drowning in thoughts of death. Why it happens, how it happens and how it feels when it happens. Some days those thoughts would feel so real that I would snap out of them panting, trying to grab my breath. What I then realised was that what I'm really afraid of, is not just death but that everything has come to an end. Listening to Alan Watts has put my fears of death to rest. I am no longer afraid

I've had one perdiod like this in my life and i was 7. I'm going through this at 28 and i just can't sleep at night because it feels like dying in some way. The irony is, I've got "Memento mori " (be mindful of death") tattooed on my arm. I am aware pf death, and that's why i'm scared. Most people don't think about it,they just enjoy the journey, they will sometime think about it when someone dies and that's it, back to normal. I'd like to be like them lol

The part with the bomb hits me hard every time. I was in a bad motorcycle wreck at 160 mph and flew around 180 feet. Felt like ages, first terrified but after a while i felt this feeling that everything is ok and will be fine. Like being comforted and i felt no fear, just love. 1000 of thoughts went through my mind and i saw my relatives and family vividly. I am an atheist but this is really what alan is talking about. I dont fear death, ride faster and harder then ever before.

This resonates with me in an odd way. I OD'd some months ago and now i realize why and how i changed. I don't cry because of redundant things in the past and I don't worry about the future. Seeing death can really fix your point of view in life. If you realize that you could die at any moment and you are okay with that then one day you wake up and it feels like the world has new life and that weight that you carried for so long has faded and you finally understand that every day is the best day of your life.

OMG finally someone who doesn't make me wrong for not wanting to live forever and not being afraid to die. I don't have to be depressed to know that there's no point in living on forever, and that in fact we NEVER GET ANYWHERE like we're always told to get someplace in life. We live INSIDE A BALL, meaning we only can go in circles anyway, which can be fun for a while but I just get bored easily and I really don't think I'm missing out on anything when I leave the human body form... Maybe its due to the fact that I almost died as an infant, I was blue in the face when my mom shook me and I started breathing again - maybe I saw something there that reminded me of my undying nature so I never felt quite home here, but always as a nomad, or visitor, who's kinda homesick by now....

I once thought that a truck on the tracks was a train. It was winter and it was too late for me to stop my car by the time I saw what I though was a train, so I just kept going. Obviously nothing happened but in the moment that I thought that it was all over for me at the age of 19 I had completely accepted that there was nothing I could do and I wasn't scared at all and I was just at such peace with everything. I'm absolutely terrified of dying but when I thought that was it, I felt 100% at peace. Crazy how your mind works.

Well i think that´s because we are all and mostly conditioned in life to link almost all achievements and sources of joy with certain conditions or efforts, as to say "nothing in this life is for free!"..so we learn to react and live in this patterns..we have to do this, to deserve that..and so one..and that´s a neverending vicious circle, which prevents us from being free at all and creates the illusion that we have to "handle" and "control" life, so actually we never feel free, as long we think we really are able to control things or particular goals..and in contemplation of death we finally realize that we merely cannot control things and therefore we are able to let it go, deeply accept and feel the true core of life, which gives us peace and freedom of fear..

there is an alan watts lecture where he mentions the book "escape from freedom", and briefly talks how capitalism wants you to hate the now so you can "escape" every now and then with the money earned and then go back to the repeat cycle, it will be great if you could make a video about that.

That is why one should find a job that reflects one's values. Just to make this clear, without capitalism you wouldn't be able to listen to Alan Watts videos right now, and a system such as communism in which you don't have the chance to "escape" to begin with is not exactly a good selling point.

Fear of death is normal. We fear what we perceive as an end to our existence and think there’s nothing after death. But that’s not true. You’re still afraid because you haven’t accepted what death is. Death is a word for a form of change. When we die, every atom which constitutes our bodies will be disassembled, only to be reassembled as something else. And it was like this before we were born. In a sense, we’ve always existed and will continue after death. We are a way for nature to experience itself, in reality there’s no difference between nature and ourself.

I have always asked myself why should anyone accept death I don't like it I think it is a terrible thing. we spend our whole lives growing, learning, discovering, building relationships and more. then one day it happens you die and all those wonderful things you have experienced or will experience gets shut off and you are gone forever. this leads to other questions like what happens to us after we die. but anyway my point is why would you accept death when there is so much beauty in life. near the end of this video he says that once the magic of life and other things wares off there is no reason to keep living and I get that but I love living and I don't want my life to shut off. maybe if I knew that there was a tomorrow for us after death I could accept it but I don't know that. so death is something I will try to avoid for as long as I can. death isn't something I always think about but when I do its like wtf that's some scary shit pardon my language. may you all have a wonderful life.

+Stephen Perry I took this to mean something slightly different than you did. Much like you, I agree that the idea of "giving up on life" is terrible. If you have the chance to continue living, you should fight. However, I think what Watts is saying is that life is only possible because one dies. It's the fear of it all ending that scares us. You even said, "all those wonderful things you have experienced or will experience gets shut off and you are gone forever." But I disagree. Those things still happened, and you still live on in the people with whom you experienced those moments with. Watts mentions a passing of the torch to your children. I fear death, but I have to tell myself that even when I'm gone, the world will continue. Others will still live on. That to me, is the beauty of life and death. Without one, the other cannot exist. To fear one, means you should also fear the other. They are 2 sides of the same coin. It isn't that you should simply give up and say "life isn't worth living because we all die", but instead you should enjoy every moment because it happens. You shouldn't fear death, but accept that one day it will happen. Hope life treats you well!

Its going to be a great day when it happens for me so until then I will enjoy my every next breath.

I found this rather interesting, and my first time at hearing this speaker share his opinions. God has spoken once more, and He speaks through another Manifestation of Himself on earth about death. I share it too. 32. O SON OF THE SUPREME! I have made death a messenger of joy to thee. Wherefore dost thou grieve? I made the light to shed on thee its splendor. Why dost thou veil thyself therefrom? (Bahá'u'lláh, The Arabic Hidden Words)

Life is not a journey it is a privilege that you get to experience. There is a consequence for being alive. Death is not to be feared it's part of the cycle of oblivion. The endless cycle of those who die and those who are born. You cant have something as life that takes life and doesn't return it. Without death Alan is right there wouldn't be life.

What if we come to this plane to become immortal, and “dying” is like recycling the energy.... or reincarnating, to again have another chance at becoming immortal What if we fell from our divinity and our task on this 3D plane is to reunite to it? If the universe is unconditional L0Ve, that would mean that we would get as many chances as we needed to accomplish this

Death is something that shouldn’t be feared. It's life's gift. People see life and death as two different things. They demonize death, while they cherish life. Both are intertwined. Think of it like this: two people sitting on a teeter totter. Without one child the teeter-totter won’t move. Life and Death are two entities playing an endless game. Death gives you a solution. It takes away your pain and suffering. it's a place where you meet the ones whom you lost, and to live eternally without pain. The body that you and I are in will give energy to an animal or person to give new life. Every single atom of your body was a part of something else, which had to die to make you. Thousands of living and nonliving things had to cease to exist to give life to you

In my opinion who ever created us gave us the gift of immortality. Though we may not be there mental but physically were there. When we die we either burned to ash, or get buryed and eventually we decompose to dirt and thought that dirt we become a plant amd get eaten by a cow for instance. Eventually that cow is slaughtered and turned into beef, and sometimes a pregnant lady eats that beef which is then used to keep that baby alive. So through the death of this mind and body we are givin' a new mind with different thoughts and a new body. Though it is not the same thoughts we are still there just in the genetic code not in the mind And whether you agree or disagree with me I don't care you have the right of freedom of speech

Children - passing on the torch of suffering - better never to have been - this was probably quite deep and meaningful for the beat-nicks and hippies back in the 1950s and 60s as these topics were not explored - since the 1990s anyone can explore them, from various perspectives, thanks to the internet - and somehow this talk no longer seems to carry any depth.

God give us life and a soul in our body, so that we experience LOVE. That's the greatest gift for being alive. Death is not the end. It's just a representative word for our passing over from this world. All living things ceased when the time comes and time will never stops for anybody. From a baby, we knew our existence slowly from our parents, as from the very beginning when Adam acquired the "knowledge" from the forbidden fruit. Otherwise, we would be like other creatures walking on Earth, knowing nothing about death at all.
