My personal experience with catholicism:
This is not a general statement about all catholics, it’s simply my own experience. I was taught that Jesus came to earth and died for me so that I have an opportunity to believe in Him, and an opportunity to be a good enough person to get to Heaven. I was taught that I had a big part to play in my salvation. Additionally, if you didn’t appear to be a good catholic girl, it was understood that people in the church would talk bad about you and look down on you. My teachers and the priests were trying to force us to be pure out of fear. It felt like a huge burden and responsibility from such a young age. By the time I got to high school, I didn’t feel like Jesus really did that much for me. I thought, “He died one time….and now everyday of my life (out of fear) I have to try so hard to follow the rules and not do what I thought at the time was all the cool and fun stuff….What I was taught about Jesus in school did not produce a heart of gratitude in the slightest.
Eventually I got so tired of feeling judged by people that I thought, “This is all man made and I don’t care what people think of me, I’m going to do me, I’m out.” People….made me reject Christ.
I still thought there was a God or a higher power. But, I didn’t feel God’s love in catholicism.
Now, I live my life the way I do, not because I was shamed into it, not because I was forced into it or judged into it. I learned a little over a year ago, that I am not part of my salvation. What Christ did on the cross, and my belief in Him alone, not my good works, saved me. I have no way of earning my salvation. That produced a heart of immense gratitude. That’s how I started loving God. Out of that, comes the changes you have seen in me. Love, instead of fear.
