@@AlanCleggYouDoAV Thank you for checking. I have checked everything I know how. Even re-setting the tv couple of times to see if the TV software can find it. Once I run the Pioneer set up, I can "tell" the TV I have a sub, but even with that when I am done with the set up the Pioneer software returns a "no sub" I agree with you that most likely the ARC feature is doing this. Next thing I will try is to remove the ARC and see if I can assign it to any other HDMI input. Thank you for taking the time to look into this. I hope my pain can help other users.

This is a great video. To the point and very helpful, especially if one has a newer model receiver. I have a Yamaha RX-V630 receiver that I have had for a long time. It has excellent sound and I hate to give it up. It does great surround sound and does not have any HDMI, internet or a couple other of the newer ports, some of which have since been deleted. I moved and forgot how I had it set up to play the great surround sound I had. It was great! One of my favorite videos to watch while running the surround sound on it is, Forrest Gump and especially the scene where Forrest is carrying Bubba out of the jungle and the jets do a low fly over dropping napalm. Hearing those jets actually fly over my head was incredible! Do you have a video that explains how to hook up the surround sound on that receiver? It does have optical in and the majority of the speakers need banana clips / plugs. I would love to keep that sound system for as long as it continues to work great. I hope to hear from you one of these days. Thanks!!

This is a great video. We're cutting the cord, so actually doing away with the TiVo / cable box. In this case we're using an LG smart TV, connected to our home network via wifi and streaming KZbin TV, HBO, Pandora, etc. So, my question is, how to connect the TV to the AVR so we can get full sound and send that sound to multiple zones.
@AlanCleggYouDoAV
@AlanCleggYouDoAV 4 жыл бұрын
I get this question a lot. Your best bet is to use a streaming device such as a Roku, AppleTv, or Firestick. Connect that device to the receiver and you’ll get surround sound. Otherwise, you’ll have to activate ARC (which I hate) or use the audio out on the TV (which is usually a fiber optic connection). If you want to send that to multiple zones, you’ll need a device with analog audio outputs (for the zone connections) and an HDMI for the main zone. Typically, new receivers have their own network music streams which can be controlled via smart phone and can be sent to any or all of the zones. This is a must have feature in my opinion.

Gregg, I am sure this is a pretty dumb question but I do not understand so I must ask. If all devices are connected to the HDMI "in" ports on the AVR and the ARC port is Audio Return from the TV then how does, say for example how does the BlueRay Player get its Video to the TV? If also I must use the Optical Cable from Receiver to TV which makes the signal less quality because optical does not give the best of transfer. I guess my 2nd question would be if I do not use the Optical what can I do to get highest quality for Video and Audio "to and from" Receiver and TV? To be honest with you I would be glad to pay you (if I knew how) for this information because it is that important to me. Thank You!
@AlanCleggYouDoAV

The ARC is a special feature built into the output on the the receiver that sends video TO the TV and receives audio FROM the TV. Very important: ARC is a feature built into the output NOT the output itself. That means you can turn the ARC feature off an use it as a normal output. All video connected to the receiver will go to the TV through the ARC output without a problem. The problem exists when you try to activate the ARC feature because you have to activate HDMI control which can make your system go screwy. Neither ARC nor optical audio will provide you with HD audio. To make your life easier, don't bother getting audio from your TV. Get a streaming device like a ROKU or AppleTV. They are faster, offer better quality audio, and you don't need to use the ARC to use them. If you have an Apple phone, get an AppleTV. It will open up some cool features for you. Streaming through a separate device makes everyone happy. Does that answer your questions?

@AlanCleggYouDoAV
@AlanCleggYouDoAV 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely through the receiver. If you don't, you won't get surround sound from your AppleTV unless you use ARC (which I do NOT recommend) or you use the TV audio output. It's way easier and performs better if you just go straight to the receiver.

As a custom installer, we want to have very specific and exact control over everything. When we allow other devices to make decisions for us, like is seen with the ARC, the systems get screwy and our customers call us requiring a service call. Although it usually works correctly, the few times it doesn’t will make angry customers. Most of them hire us because technology isn’t their strong suit so they can’t get the system back on track without our help.

Getting audio OUT of your TV is a little but tricky but it's possible. 1. Use RCA cables to go from the audio OUT on the TV to an input on the receiver. Then go through your TV menus to make sure you're sending audio to the receiver. Usually this is done by turning the speakers off or setting the volume setting to "fixed" instead of "variable." 2. Use an optical audio cable to go from the TV to the receiver. You'll still need to make sure the menus are set up properly on the TV. 3. Don't stream through the TV. Stream using a Blu-ray player or AppleTV or Roku, etc.

Hmmmmm... the only thing I can think to do is to buy a 3.5 mm mini to RCA connector. Plug the mini into the TV headphone jack and the RCAs into the receiver. It’s not ideal but it will work. The TV volume will have to be up high and should stay there. Both the receiver and TV will have the power to control the volume and it can make it messy when you’re switching inputs on the receiver. www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-3-5mm-2-Male-Adapter-Stereo/dp/B01D5H8KO2?th=1&psc=1

If you have equipment that uses hdmi control the way it is intended it's a piece of cake I use one button to on whatever I would like to use to watch from, then the AVR turns on, sets itself to the right inputs the tv goes on and with the same remote I control everything on my tv , avr and control playback on whatever I am watching.You just set the CEC control on whatever you connect to the avr the right way READ it should not turn off anything or set to standby anything the moment you turn it off only on avr/tv end you should set that option to on.So when you turn off avr or tv everything else turns off too.
@AlanCleggYouDoAV
@AlanCleggYouDoAV 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. When pro remote programmers touch a system, the first thing we do is shut off HDMI CEC. It creates more problems than it's worth. Example: You're watching cable and your daughter wants a movie out of the DVD player so she hits "eject" which turns on the DVD player. This triggers the AVR to switch to that input. You tell her to turn off the DVD player, which in turn, shuts off the whole system. Your cable box doesn't have HDMI CEC so it's still on. Now you have to manually turn the system back on and set the right inputs. Sounds easy for some people, but customers struggle with that, ESPECIALLY when they have guests over that don't know how to use their system. It's way easier and reliable to setup a remote control to control every action that occurs. Any guest can pick up a remote and hit the button that says "Watch TV." Thanks for watching and thanks again or the comment.

Every system is unique to the home owner's situation so it's impossible to make a one-size-fits-all installation guide. This is why my video series teaches you the ins and outs of a home theater system. This way, you can take the information and run with it, hopefully tweaking your system as you grow and technology changes.

I am using a Denon AVR-X1400H. I am getting crackling through my paradigm subwoofer. Do you know why it crackles at certain decibels because it does not crackle all the time. If I don't want to use my surround sound with my 4k tv do I still have to hook up digital optical wire?
@AlanCleggYouDoAV
@AlanCleggYouDoAV 6 жыл бұрын
The sub can be a few things. I'd check the wiring first. Let the sub do its thing then wiggle both ends of the plug (and the wire) and see if it crackles. If that seems ok, it may be that your sub amp is going bad. When there are loud sounds, there is a lot of power demand on that amp (built inside your sub). Try messing with the settings, like bringing the sub volume down (also called "level"). Also mess with the power on/off/auto setting. I know it sounds weird, but switching the power to "on" instead of "auto" can also help that problem sometimes. If that doesn't do it, you may be looking at getting a new sub.

In response to your TV question, you ONLY need to use a fiber optic is you are streaming content using the apps in your TV and you want that to play through the speakers. I prefer you don't do that. A better option is to use your DVD player to stream or even better yet, buy an AppleTV or Roku to stream. They're cheap and awesome for streaming. I use the Roku in my house and I love it.

@AlanCleggYouDoAV
@AlanCleggYouDoAV 3 жыл бұрын
Do you want to try to listen to 2 different things using the same fire stick? That is not possible. If you want to use the Fire Stick in zone 2, you'll need to get an "HDMI to analog convertor." HDMI will work for zone 1 but zone 2 will need the analog connection. In this way, you can listen to the same thing from the Fire Stick in both zones or one zone while you do something different on a separate device in a different zone. Example, Fire Stick zone 2 and cable box in zone 1.

@AlanCleggYouDoAV
@AlanCleggYouDoAV 4 жыл бұрын
You have to have a remote control processor that is capable of sending remote commands via network. These are typically for custom installers but if you can get your hands on one and the programming software, I definitely recommend using this type of system. Your remote could be connected to the WiFi network speaking to the base station or the remote could be using RF. Then the base station (which needs to be connected to the network) sends commands over the network to any device anywhere in the house.

So i just got an older 5.1 surround system. (ADCOM GTP-830 processor and GFA-7400 power amp) I have no previous experience with high end speaker systems. The processor doesn't have Hdmi or anything special for the video side. It does however have digital audio input (optical). So i would like to connect it to my Home theater Pc's optical output and then have the pc run video straight to the Tv without going through the processor unit. Is it as simple as just plugging the Pc's optical out into the processors optical input and just ignoring video input's and outputs of the processor? If anyone is interested the speakers in question are Kef Q95, 2x Kef Q65's, 2x Kef Q 15's. Also got a ADCOM ACE-315 surge protector. (didn't get a subwoofer yet, im not sure if i need one as i'm a noob in the high end audio world) Got the whole system for free from my father because he upgraded. Might as well also ask, What is the point of the surge protector? Is it necessary? What exactly does it do?
@AlanCleggYouDoAV
@AlanCleggYouDoAV 6 жыл бұрын
Oops! Sorry for the delay. This comment just appeared. Yes, optical from your PC goes into the receiver and don't run video through the receiver. Run it straight to the TV. Good surge protectors do more than protect our equipment from electrical surges. They can also disconnect your system in a LOW power situation which is also dangerous to equipment. They should be made of high quality components that OPEN the electrical circuit when they get hit instead of fusing the circuit CLOSED (which can happen in cheap units). Nice units will also provide different levels of power filtering which helps to wash out phase fluctuations and other power nonsense that makes its way into your system. Power filters help your system sound and look better.

Okay all the connections made sense up until HDMI out from the receiver to HDMI in to the TV. Why is the signal going to the TV at this point? What is the TV going to do with the signal? The television gets its signal from either satellite or Fiber Optics or in some very rare cases over the air through an antenna and goes directly into the TV. The TV does not require anything else and yet there it is going in again. Why?
@AlanCleggYouDoAV
@AlanCleggYouDoAV 5 жыл бұрын
Good question! The receiver needs to be directly connected to the devices for the best audio quality (don't connect the device to the TV then come out of the "audio out" on the TV into the receiver). This is best done via HDMI directly from the device to the receiver. This is VERY important for high quality audio. Your TV won't even send out multi-channel audio. It only sends out stereo (left and right). I know that's not your question but I want to make sure that point is clear. Now why does the receiver connect to the TV? 1. If everything is connected to the receiver first, you need to get video from the receiver to the TV. Since HDMI is carrying audio and video, the receiver will keep the audio signals from the devices and pass the the video to the TV through the "HDMI out" on the receiver. 2. Convenience of video switching. I don't need to change inputs on my TV if I use this method. Essentially, my TV is just a monitor that requires On/Off. I never have to change TV inputs because all the video comes through the single HDMI from the receiver. I only have to make the switch on the RECEIVER and it will change the audio AND video for me.

You say that if your AV Receiver does not have HDMI Upscaling, only use it for Audio. But what is wrong with a simple HDMI in (e.g. FiOS DVR) and HDMI out (e.g. Samsung Smart TV)? Seems like there is no upscaling required, so what's the issue? I can see why with component in and HDMI out. BTW my AV receiver is a Yamaha RXV483. I want to take advantage of all my audio/video switching and control to be in one place, why should I go spend another $200 bucks?
@AlanCleggYouDoAV
@AlanCleggYouDoAV 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct. I'm sorry for not making it clear. If you plug all your HDMI devices into the receiver and you're not worried about upscaling, you'll still have the benefit of video switching. I'm assuming you want to connect everything to the TV then go from the TV to the receiver via optical audio or HDMI audio return channel (ARC)? GREAT question and thanks for asking it. Neither the ARC nor optical audio carry the high def surround sound formats such as dolby digital True-HD and such. Those high quality sound formats are just as important as good video quality. Also, connecting to the receiver makes maintenance and adding/subtracting equipment easier. Receivers have video processors in them that can enhance the picture or be bypassed if you wish as well. ARC also creates a nightmare on the custom control side too.

If understand you correctly, essentially you're asking if you should send audio to the receiver then bypass the receiver with a second HDMI cable from the BluRay players to the TV. To maximize quality, yes. Using your existing receiver, you should hook it up as you explained. If you upgrade the receiver, just run one HDMI from each Bluray player to the receiver. It allows your devices to talk to each other and send each other commands. That sounds like a good idea except for when it doesn't do what you want. Example: you're watching satellite TV. Your young toddler accidentally turns the DVD player on. Your DVD player tells your TV to change inputs which you don't want so you jump up to turn the DVD player off and the DVD player tells your TV to turn off too. Now your TV is on the wrong input and powered off. For some people that isn't too hard to fix but for others it's a nightmare- especially if you have a universal remote or a TV that doesn't understand ON/OFF power controls. It's easier to turn it off and let a nice universal remote handle all the switching. There are LOT of examples of this confusion that I've seen and it makes a nightmare.

First you need a way to control volume at each location. Volume controls in each room are cheap and convenient. That's a lot of speakers so I hope your amp is powerful. Get an 8 zone speaker selector (that connects 8 pairs of speakers- i'm assuming you have 2 speakers in each room). The speaker selector balances the impedance so you don't blow the amp. Connect the speaker selector to the receiver and the speakers to the speaker selector.

Very good point! There are auto on/off amps out there too that work great so they aren't ON all the time. That's what we use when the whole house is setup on the same zone, and the receiver can't handle the power demands.

Isn’t that a pretty cool feature?! I think it’s called “passive audio pass-through.” When the receiver is off, the video AND audio go to the TV. This is nice for people that want to watch TV without the surround sound speakers on.

Hi Alan or any one that can help me out. I have a Yamaha RX-A2030 for many years ( bought new when it came out) I got this with first speaker set up to be able to grow my speakers but not have to buy a new am every time I upgrade to eventually get my dream speakers. I'm 5.1 for now with high end speakers ( B&W 803D , Wharfedale diamond 220 book shelf (got a really good deal on them) and 700W dynamo Martin Logan sub. I will be adding 2.1 down the road. My question is do you have a video on how to set up the receiver to be able to optimize this kind of set up I love gaming movies and music but I don't have the knowledge to set up sound hertz and other stuff of that nature I don't understand so I basically set up my stuff by ear as I like it better then using the Ypao. I'm having problems making the Wharfedale sound present it feels like everything else cancels them out and this shouldn't be as the Wharfedale 220's are a high end bookshelf speakers. When I bought them they sounded very good in the store but at home it feels like I don't have the right options selected on the yamaha amp. I did not bridge the speakers I'm using banana plugs for everything. Not sure if bridging them will change anything so I'm not tempting it. thanks for the help

I don’t know if I’m the right guy to answer this. My ears are above average but not pro level by any means. My strengths are installation. The YPAO mic should get you really close. Set your subwoofer to LFE at 80 hz. I hope to make a video using a hand held sound level meter later. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
@taxi615
@taxi615 5 жыл бұрын
thanks for the answer. The sub is on LFE but don't know how to put it to 80hz the amp doesn't allow to do this I don't think. What I did is watch Martin Logan's tutorial on subs and did what they said and I think it sounds good...lol. Like I said I don't know what HZ do so what I did is set up fronts to large centre to small default 40hz and rears are at small 40hz default again. Everything sound amazing but I'm sure that a pro would come here and set everything up it would sound so much better. I'm just not very good with setting up amps as the technical stuff eludes me I should watch more videos regarding this to help me understand better. May I suggest you to make a full video on all the options of your Yamaha because there is nothing on YT about yamaha trust me been looking for years...lol. I don't remember but I think I have the model right above the one you have so I'm guessing you got yours about the same year I did ( 2010 ish) another thing have been trying to update my amp's firmware for years now with the usb drive and it doesn't want to update and to be honest I have never connected it to the internet as mine didn't come with the wifi antenna and it is to far for a cable hookup do you have a suggestion for this? Yes I watched clips on how to do it and it won't work at all so my 2030 is still on version 1.87 and should be at 1.93. another thing Yamaha has apps for theses amps and can't make them work so I'm guessing I need to either connect it to my router or get the wifi antenna what is your take on this? Sorry for the long questions but your the first to actually answer back to any questions an you seem to know your shit and have almost the exact same amp I do. thanks!

@@taxi615 You can change the setting I'm almost positive. All your speakers should be set to "small" and 80 hz. You want them to handle all your mids and highs while the sub handles the lows. Without seeing the menus, I can't tell you to do it exactly. You have to download the update, then unzip it I think. After following the bootup protocal on the receiver, it should see the file. Otherwise, get a long network cable and run it on the floor to the router and do it over the network. Then roll up the wire and store it away. OR you can unplug all the cables into the receiver and take it to the router.
@taxi615
@taxi615 5 жыл бұрын
yeah I'll try setting up to 80hz and watch a movie or music to see how I feel about it. as for the firmware I just tried with a long cable over the network and I get a DEVICE ERROR after it does the verification. I'm shit outta luck I guess I'll go on my friend PC to do the usb thing as I only have a MAC and don't think that will work as I tried it many times before. man I wish I was better tech savvy.

Quick question to anyone in the comments that can help or is willing to help I’ve been having a hard time trying to connect my Laptop to my TV and have the sound play out of my surround sound system. So connecting my laptop to tv is simple I’m using a HDMI cable and simply changing the display options on the laptop to extend so that is not a problem but when I want sound from my surround sound nothing seems to work I’ve connected every possible format I can think of and idk what am doing . I have a Sony model # DAV-HDX275 Surround Sound with a LGTV model # 43UH6100 ... can someone please help me figure out if it is even possible to do what I want to do again my goal is to watch on my tv everything that’s on my cpu and have the sound play out of the surround sound . Any help would be appreciated

One thing I hate about all you guys who supposedly show us how to connect these things is 1) When your tutorial begins you've already got wires hooked up on some of the components. Like the blue wire in the DVD right off the bat. 2) the terminology, what the hell is a "custom B and C wire"? How many out of 100 people would you guess understood that? 3) You go too fast and don't recap every couple of minutes to explain EXACTLY what is going into what, and why. I know these videos are free but if there isn't a chance I'll know more after watching then it was just a waste of my time.
@AlanCleggYouDoAV

I agree. This is complicated stuff! This is why I made a 4 video series talking about it all. This is video 4 out of 4 so most things are done already. I recommend watching the other 3 vids to fully understand everything even though they’re long. I don’t think I can reach everything in one 15 minute video. I have a quick hook-up video on my channel that goes over everything briefly (barely any depth). You can try that one.
