One of my favorite movies. I was 7 when it released in '93. I do want to clarify something though. This was actually NOT Disney. It was Touchstone pictures, Touchstone pictures was bought by Disney a few years later, and with it they got the rights to Nightmare Before Christmas. This movie was made before the buy out. It was also made by the same studio that did James and the Giant Peach. The music is by Danny Elfman who does most of Tim Burton's music as well as the music for James and the Giant Peach.
@christopherwall2121 Жыл бұрын
Touchstone was always Disney; it was a separate distribution company they created to put out more mature movies, like _Pulp Fiction_ This got put out as a Touchstone movie because Disney was nervous about this weird thing, and were quite surprised when it turned into a huge marketing machine.

The Nightmare before Christmas is a classic 🥰 I watched it a lot as a kid, the animation was truly something special, especially when you learn that it was all done with hand-made stop-motion. One fun fact though to keep in mind the with the movie is that Tim Burton actually didn't make the film, he mainly came up with the concept for it as it was based on one of his poems he wrote and his drawings of Jack Skellington & Zero and eventually went on to draw the rest of the cast for the movie in pencil sketches while giving short bios of the characters. He entrusted everything else (the character figures and the stop motion animation process) to Henry Selick who was the overall director of the film. It's funny you mentioned James and the Giant Peach and Coraline because those are films that Henry Selick directed as well, The Nightmare Before Christmas was his big break that got him into the industry. The main reason why they put Tim Burton's name on the project was because at the time Disney thought his name would attract more attention since he already had some notoriety thanks to his films like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. But yeah it was super fun to see your reaction to the film, your commentary is very lively. If I could recommend a future Tim Burton, definitely check out Corpse Bride, that's personally one of my most favorites but biases aside, it has a really nice story and a nice continuation of beautiful stop motion ☺

So, like a lot of animated movie characters, Jack's singing and talking voices are different guys. Originally, Danny Elfman had intended to play Jack in the dialogue sections as well as the songs, but he didn't deliver a satisfactory performance so Chris Sarandon ( _Fright Night_ , _The Princess Bride_ ) was called in to do all of Jack's dialogue. In the video game sequel to this movie, Sarandon does both Jack's dialog and singing. And I'm not surprised this gave you _James and the Giant Peach_ vibes; same guy directed both movies, Henry Selick. (If you go back and watch the latter movie, Jack has a cameo as a pirate skeleton)

We didn't go to the theater often. That was a rare treat. My Dad took my Brother and I to Walmart and we bought The Nightmare before Christmas on VHS. We wore that tape out. Lol. It never scared me or my Brother who was 3 years younger than me. We both have a strange sense of humor. So this movie was awesome to us. Still my favorite and every now and then I will paint a Nightmare before Christmas scene for my Brother Zach. Thanks for watching it and I am so happy you enjoyed it.

You cracked me up when you advised the character to get moisturizer for her hair. Tim Burton also did the the first serious (semi serious) film treatment of Batman in 1989. Hope you review it soon. Merry (belated) Christmas and Happy New Year!

Little fun trivia. Tim Burton worked for Disney as an animator (for instance on Fox and the hound. He tried to make this movie during those years but Disney wasn't having it (back then). After he left Disney and made in his own movies and after the smash hit of Batman, Disney came crawling and asked him to make it then. But by then he was too busy making Batman Returns, so he asked Henry Selick to make it in his stead. (The same Henry Selick that made James and the giant peach and Coraline.) Disney still found this movie too dark for their wholesome image so at first, they released it under Touchstone Pictures. I would really recommend Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow as well. Happy Holidays and a happy new year from Sweden.
@Psycopathicus2 жыл бұрын
I would highly recommend the two Burton Batman movies - 'Batman' is still great; 'Batman Returns' is one of my absolute favorite films. They're not, perhaps, for everyone (though they certainly were popular enough back in the day), but they are classics, regardless, and there's an awful lot of current movies that would simply never have been made if it hadn't been for their influence. (Also, Danny Elfman - who scored most Tim Burton-related projects - scored both, and if you listen closely to the 'Batman Returns' score, you'll hear hints of a few of 'Nightmare's songs. It's well-worth listening to, anyway, 'cause it is GORGEOUS.)

I recommend a Tim Burton movie called Ed Wood. The story is about a not so great movie director, Ed Wood, and his efforts to make, in the end, terrible movies. Drama/Comedy. It stars Johnny Depp, Sarah Jessica Parker, Martin Landau and Bill Murray. I also recommend another Tim Burton movie called Pee-wee's Big Adventure. The story is about Pee-wee Herman (Paul Ruebens) traveling across the US in search of his stolen bicycle that he cherishes. Comedy/Family. Thanks for the upload. Nightmare is one of my favorite movies. I saw it as a kid when it came out and loved it. I've always liked dark stuff and with Danny Elfman doing the music and singing as Jack it was a hit for me and my family. Glad you enjoyed it. Merry Christmas!

Lotta people clarifying that Burton had nothing to do with Coraline: let me give you some background. When it came out back in 2009, Neil Gaiman wasn't as big a name as he is now. He was know in the comics community for Sandman and in the fantasy community for his novels, but he wasn't really mainstream, so the studio didn't have confidence in using his name to market it. What they did know was that it was stop--motion, directed by Henry Selick, and was kiddie-creepy. So they HEAVILY marketed it as, "From the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas'. However since Nightmare was heavily marketed with Tim Burton's name, most people assume he directed it. That, combined with the similar tone is why people associate Burton with Coraline.

Two things: 1) If you liked the music in this film (because it is objectively excellent), there's an album called Nightmare Revisited where artists cover all the different songs. Amy Lee from Evanescence does Sally's Song, Rodrigo y Gabriela cover Oogie Boogie's song, I think Rise Against, Marilyn Manson, and RJD2 are on there too. Highly recommend. 2) As far as Tim Burton recommendations, if you haven't seen Big Fish yet... please. You must. It's honestly my favorite Burton film ever, between the soundtrack, the acting, and the storytelling. Happy holidays and thank you for putting your joy into the world, one snarky comment at a time! :)
