You know what I love about Untamed Strength? The fact that they show people from all walks of life. Sometimes when I watch other channels, they usually just showcase big, strong or aesthetic people (sometimes combinations of those) but Untamed Strength makes us feel like we're all on the journey to success. That we're not alone in the fight to fitness. That's why I kinda love Untamed Strength.

Holy shit. A 225 bench does NOT equal an 8 minute mile. A 225 bench takes on average, 6 month to a year to train to.... but an 8 minute mile is glacial, and can be achieved in a few weeks by someone who is of a moderate BF%. A 6 minute mile would be a better comparison.

I saw that OHP video too but he grips the bar fully with his fingers. I have tried following that grip starting with the set up but once my fingers wrap fully around the bar, the palm position changes. This one change with gripping with the finger tips might be the thing to make all the difference. Got to try it with benching too.
@frysebox16 жыл бұрын
I naturally do something like this when I bench, although not from the rack. I derack the bar and let the weight stabilize at lockout while I find the optimal position under my wrist bone.

Good video, im surprised more ppl arent using the bulldog grip, or at least posting vids about it. Since I started using it awhile ago its made a pretty big difference in terms of my comfort level when benching. It makes the weight feel lighter when you go to unrack it and for some reason helps me engage my lats a bit better.

Does it help with the pause at the bottom in competition? I hit my marks in my last meet but trying to get a better bench in terms of leverage, sticking point 2inches off of chest... I'm doing pause floor press to build up tricep strength.
@alabdel13887 жыл бұрын
For me it helps at the bottom of a pause as well. Overall, with the grip positioned this way, the transfer of power seems to take a jump at the bottom. As he says in his video this might differ from person to person, i'd experiment with the grip and compare how it feels relative to your usual grip.

Alan, you mentioned some ulnar nerve pain with that bulldog grip because the bar smashes on the outside heel of the hand. I have this occasionally when overhead pressing and i think its because i rotate my hands in for the grip like Rippetoe has taught. My grip feels great but not that nerve impingement that feels like a shock in my right forearm. I've searched for maybe a grip or some type of adjustment to minimize and the only thing that has worked so far is to not squeeze the bar so tightly. Interesting about that nerve and bar position though, i'm wondering if I did less of an angled grip on the ohp if that would fix it. Any thoughts?

I tried the bulldog grip on the press and it seemed to severely reduce my power and ability to keep the bar stable in my hands. It felt as if I couldn't grip the bar as tightly. I'm not sure if the issue was simply due to me not being used to the grip (that's probably it), but it didn't feel great. My grip that I've found most successful and comfortable was doing kind of like what you suggest not doing in this video, where I rotate my hands and then wrap my fingers all the way over the bar. Maybe this is wrong, but it seems to have removed all wrist pain while still allowing me to grip the bar tightly and keep it stable. I think I'll try the proper bulldog grip again today, since I'll be doing bench press. Maybe time and practice is all I need to get the most out of it. If it will bring my numbers up, I'm willing to keep trying.

13:45 - I once managed to get a numb arm while benching because the bar was sitting on this nerve. Was pretty awkward since i had no idea if my arm would participate in the pressing when i lowered the bar (thankfully it did). ^^ Even more awkward was that 2 of my fingers remained numb for over 24 hours. I was honsetly scared that i broke something. Eventually they came back to life on the 3rd day. Just in time for the next bench press workout. XD

Cool. I've been doing this grip for a while and like it a lot. Except my fingers are long enough, I guess, that I can still get my fingers around the bar. I started doing it also because of overhead press hurting my wrists. It definitely helps prevent your hands from calking back when benching or pressing. Feels a lot more stable. Didn't know it was called the "bulldog" grip though. 🤘

I'm not sure if it's the cause or if it's just aggravated an existing injury, but the bulldog grip really hurts the area between my ulna and hand. I'm not very familiar with that part of the anatomy, but it feels like a ligament that's being pulled too far even without weight on the bar. It's worse in my right hand. Lately I've just been trying to focus on keeping my wrists straighter with a normal grip since I had been getting irritation from over-extension.
