Ran into this problem about a month ago. Tweeked my back some how and the pain was horrible. I couldn't squat or deadlift or do anything that involved putting alot of pressure on my back. So I took the bodybuilding approach to training my legs using the machines and isolation movements. It wasn't quite the same...but my legs were swore and I still got a good workout in until I was able to slowly get back to the barbell. I also was at the last week of my program and the weights were getting really heavy. Instead of hopping right back to it. I started back at week 1 again of my programs. So far so good. I even added alot of core isolation and back to help rehab and reduce the chance of another back strain.

Speaking of setbacks... I just tore my right hamstring last weekend. Some people call it pulling a hamstring. It still hurts and eta to complete healing is 6 weeks. And it did not happen from weight training... it happened while on vacation in a water park. SOOO I am starting to not like vacations as they are the devils way to set you back on your training program. Vacations screw up your diet and exercise habits especially when vacationing with your spouse and children, but I guess a vacation is needed sometimes.

@MAGAMAN7 жыл бұрын
Just cause you can do a light weight without pain when you are injured, doesn't mean you should. I recently had an issue with my right knee where it started making some popping noises, but no pain at all. I completely my squats because I've always hear that if there is no pain, it's not really a problem. I did squats the next workout and after my 2nd set my knee started popping again. I decided 3 sets was enough for that day. On my next workout I did deadlifts. My knee felt a little tight, but I did the deadlifts anyway since I didn't need to bend my knee enough to make the popping noises it was making. The next day I noticed that my knee hurt a little if I tried to cross my right leg over my left leg, but there was no pain if I pushed on my knee around the area where the pain was when I crossed my leg. The day after that I couldn't raise my leg high enough to put my shoe on. I had pain if I tried to go up stairs, and crossing my leg was out of the question. I still had no pain to the touch anywhere on my knee. I haven't worked out in a week and have been using heating pads on my knee along with a really crappy brace that doesn't do much other than keep my knee a little warmer when it's not sliding down my leg. My knee feels much better and I can cross my leg without pain. I'm still going to take another week or two off. If this is a PT injury, aggravating them can make them worse and cause scar tissue that can cause permanent problems. So, long story short, just because there isn't pain, it doesn't mean there is no injury and by continuing to exercise (at least in some situations) can make it much worse. Also, the whole "if your knees make popping noises but there is not pain, you are fine" is a load of crap. Maybe if your knees have been making popping noises all your life, you might be OK, but if it starts suddenly, take some time off. Unless you are competing for big money, there is ZERO reason to ignore an injury. If I take a week or two off, my gains won't vanish, I'll just be a week or two behind. No biggie. If I ignore an injury and continue working out I could be in pain or even disabled the rest of my life. If you are not sure, don't risk it.

I dsiagree on your views about pain. Speaking from experience one should first figure out what the problem exactly is and what causes it. By carrying on at a lower level, where the pain is less intensive might cause for the pain to become chronic. This will set you back even more!

Very motivating! But I'd like to point out that some people don't have full control over how they respond to setbacks, unfortunately. Anxiety and other issues of mental health can really create a roadblock and put some people in a very dark place. Some are strong enough to get out of it themselves, some need help. Some are strong enough to call for help, others may need their loved ones to see that need. Always try to support those around you, it can make a huge difference in their lives.

Hey Alan love the channel, enjoy your humor and knowledge. I’m just starting lifting, going to start the starting strength program after Xmas. I asked for the book and some more weights cause i don’t have enough at the moment. But my question is warm up sets. I am working with more of a roadblock than a setback. My deadlift is stuck due to prior injury, long story short severely bulged disc L3-L4. With extensive warm up, rolling and stretching I can do work but there is a point ,around 375#, where the pain starts. It’s strange to me that I can rep 345-355 but 375 is the magic number where my back says fuckyu! My gains in the squat, bench, overhead, etc are steady but the deadlift kills me. Many people say “hey, you squat a house, why worry about the deadlift?” Because it’s there and I don’t like limits! I’m curious on your thoughts.

Hi Alan, I'm curious to learn your opinion on shoulder-blade position during the Press. When unracking the bar (and any additional weight), are the shoulder blades supposed to be drawn down and together? Rippetoe says the shoulder blades are going to naturally move up and allow for enough room for the cuff muscles. I was wondering whether in the starting position and in the eccentric phase the shoulder blades should be retracted and 'packed'. Thanks a bunch and thank you for all the good stuff and Merry Christmas. If anyone else has ideas about this, feel free to share. Thank you. I'm fairly new with the exercise and have a history of mild shoulder discomfort/aches and pains that sometimes get triggered with the Press. Most of the time, things are improving and the aches are probably due to general weakness in the cuff muscles. It's an amazing exercise when done right.
@canererbay88427 жыл бұрын
Yes, scapulae should be as stable as possible at the bottom (achieved with down and back scapulae) and lats should be engaged so the triceps can sit on them so you have a stable base to press from. As the bar moves up, scapulae will natually rotate and move away from that stable position as you already mentioned and you shouldn't try to keep the scapulae down and back because that's what causes the impingement.
