Fantastic video as always! You recommended the Bison Wool socks in a prior video and I now wear them too. You're right, they are amazing. Glad you're out having fun. I loved the gear review. A couple of things to think about. In the event of a fire, while one is fighting it, the other needs to be pitching everything they can out of the van as fast as possible. Vehicle fires tend to spread quickly. I also did not see you mention chains for your tires. Do people not use chains in Alaska when you get into gnarly road conditions? Ideally, you'd never have to use them. Just curious. Hope you're having a great day and keep up the amazing videos!
@WingsandWheelsAlaska4 жыл бұрын
We do not have chains right now although that has crossed our minds a few times. We will probably learn the hard way at some point that we shouldn't drag our feet on buying them lol. We should do a fire drill at some point just to practice! Thank you for the feedback. We always enjoy hearing from you!

Good video. For your breaker bar that takes the lug nuts off, if you can spare the space get a four foot long pipe that fits snug around the end of the breaker bar--meaning the end that you hold onto, will fit inside the pipe, thus lengthening the bar and providing much greater power when loosening a nut. If some reason you cant or have trouble with a lugnut, the pipe on top of the breaker bar will provide leverage to loosen almost any lugnut. The longer the pipe. The more leverage, to loosen the most stubborn nuts. Its also helps so you dont have to use much of your own strength, which can quickly overtax you in inclimate conditions. Also there most likely is a youtube video about using leverage to loosen a lugnut. So you can see what im talking about. But it becomes invaluable when youre in a situation. And your wife can easily use it too. I hope this helps and safe travels.

Hi Denise, One thing we always have to be aware of is our cameras and our lenses when filming in these environments. We are not a large production so we have to try to gauge the impact on our equipment. Could we set a camera outside fora. long period of time? yes but then that camera takes an incredible beating that would force us to replace it. We do have some longer exposures in these weather environments but it all has a cost. Happy New Year!

Always good advice. In all our years of travel we forgot to tell someone before we went off grid once. It was only for 24 hours, but my son started to get nervous. Our kids and a few friends have us lowjacked up until we lose service. I learned my lesson on that one. Didn't even think about it until the middle of the night when I realized nobody knew where we were. We've been researching Garmins and other ELT's but when we're 100% honest with ourselves the cost can't be justified right now. It's at the top of our list though! Thanks for the awesome advice!

Very True. We will get one when we take on those adventures in the future but for what we're doing now we've been okay without one. We travel into remote places but the beauty of the roads in Alaska is they are essential for the transportation of goods between communities and remote homes. It might be a few days, but it's never too long before someone comes along but someone will. In the winter it's not often we're without cell service. But yes! Sat phones are essential.

Aloha guys Brad here from Hawaii I am a former US Marine and I saw your survival gear it is always an evolution of what works and what does not so practice with it and I do have a suggestion: have that stuff in backpacks versus plastic totes so that if you have to walk away quickly you can do it fast.. also survival kit for the doggie...make sure each pack has a tarp and 0 degree sleeping bag, pack a saw... MREs: get more, open them and field strip them to get the basic meals separated and save space.... look “Corporals corner” on KZbin to learn more from that Marine. He’s a instructor in survival. Be able to start fires with other means besides a lighter in case yours breaks... I recommend 5.11 24hr “Rush” backpacks ...

Don't have my RV yet, but always carry some sort of "Emergency Kit" in my Daily Drivers. Presently here in TX I carry a "semi-serious" kit (mainly for Summers but also for the fairly mild cold weather TX gets) -- but up on CO (moving back in September) it's a "serious" kit, and mainly for the Winters there. And regardless where I live, a flat-tire-repair kit (I use those "mushroom" plugs) and a small 12v air compressor -- also used for goign off-road when I need to air-down my tires then afterwards air them up when back on pavement. BTW, good thing you got your Revel's "re-insulation" project done when you did -- just in time! ;-) Happy Travels, -- BR
@WingsandWheelsAlaska4 жыл бұрын
We do have a tire repair kits but I am looking for a decent portable air compressor that wont take up a lot of space. Thank you for the suggestions! Hope you are well Bill.
@billredding20004 жыл бұрын
@@WingsandWheelsAlaska You might look at the "Viair" brand of small, portable 12 air compressors. My "serious" compressor (and the first oen I got (that wasn't a cheap $20-30 unit you can get anywhere) is one is the very well customer-rated Viair 450P (40A max draw)-- the MAIN plus (to me) is it has a 100% duty-cycle (most portable 12v compressors don't) -- no waiting for cool-down periods if doing multiple tires, or filling a large tire from zero. But I didn't want to carry a $300 (at the time, and rated as "the best 12v portable air compressor you can get for under $300") unit onboard in case my car got burglarized. Instead, I got another Viair compressor -- the 88P (20A max draw), and ALSO very well rated -- for everyday carry in my vehicle (2016 Honda Pilot AWD) whether I be off or on pavement. Its duty-cycle is less but still decent. However, for you in more "extreme" conditions in Alaska, where you might need a more serious (but not TOO expensive like some that are $1000+), I'd go for the 450P or similar (or perhaps an ARB compressor). Should I need to do soem "serious" filling, I pull the 450P out of my apt, hook it up directly to my battery (with engine running of course!) and get busy. But for most jobs -- filling up one tire or topping-off all four -- the 88P is fine. Some people mount their 12v compressors (some ARBs for example) permanently in the engine compartment (jeeps, 4x4 trucks, etc) -- if there's room! -- so they're always ready as they're off-road a lot. I carry mine in the vehicle's storage area as I'm mostly on pavement (but some weekends I'm out in the desert with no help out there to be expected) but it's there whenever needed. And, an ACCURATE air-gauge (the one on my $300 Viair is NOT accurate...so I fill up a bit over pressure (according to the Viar's built-in air gauge) and then adjust the air with my separate proven-to-be-accurate gauge. :-) Thanks...I'm okay (I guess)...watch out for any corno-viruses (!) up there! ;-) -- BR

I enjoy the documentation of your adventures, and your description of your survival gear in case you need it. One suggestion: when you are out in the wilds boondocking, I suggest you add an Iridiun satellite phone to your emergency gear. If you are out of cell phone coverage and in an emergency situation where you are stuck or need medical help, you can always contact someone, talk to them, and provide your GPS coordinates. This capability could easily save your lives if you are in a desperate situation. Regards, Sam D.

Hi Jim, We are definitely adding Ice Cleats this winter. After our hike on the glacier a few weeks ago we learned the advantage of them. No idea why we hadn't used them before. Thank you for the suggestion.

My suggestion is to get Ham radio licenses and join a Ham radio club. That way you will have network of people you can rely on and someone may be able to pick up your distress call, if you were ever in trouble. The knowledge gained by getting the license and joining a club could save your life. Also, it is a fun, interesting and inexpensive hobby. You don't know what you don't know and this is true with radio communications. The Technician license is easy to get. You can study using a book, but I found a program, like Ham Test Online makes it easier.

@WingsandWheelsAlaska4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mark. Great suggestion. We do have a small tent with a ground sheet that could work in a pinch, I probably would take out one of my old wool blankets but tarp is something we started carrying this summer. Mostly for extra protection other than the awning if we need in the event of heavy rains like we've been having. Excellent suggestion! Thanks for watching. :)

Since you have a diesel does the van have a generator, if not do you have a small portable generator to power the block heater and the battery heater? Without them a diesel will not start below a certain temperature. While the come along has its place I think I’d go for an electric winch set up to mount in front and rear receivers with an electrical connection each end. If you’re in line with the cable and it snaps you become a target. It’s recommended to have a capacity 1-1/2 times the weight of the vehicle. At least a hundred feet of cable to redirect the path of travel. Do you have goggles for severe wind driven snow, etc.? How long will the drone last on a charge and how long does it take to charge? Just curious.
@WingsandWheelsAlaska4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, We do not have a generator yet. So far no issues with the diesel engine at such cold temps but we did have an issue with DEF. Who knew DEF freezes ... well we do now. Great tips on the winch we will keep that in mind when we take the leap. COVID has slowed down our plans slightly. We do have goggles for when it gets really bad and we need them. We have three batteries for the drone and each one lasts about 15 minutes. We don't really pay attention to charge time cause when we use one up we just through it on the charger and grab a different one. Will try to pay more attention to it. Hope you are staying safe!
@kevinstonerock31584 жыл бұрын
I’ve actually heard a number of times about the DEF from years past but since it’s occurred from so long ago I figured they would have its location fixed to where it would no longer be a problem. I’ve heard from a dealership that if you run out you can actually use water for a while in case you run out but it’s not going to help in your case. If you could use a jacket that has coolant circulating through it on the way to a heater it might do a pretty good job but you’d have to make sure it didn’t create an air pocket that prevented coolant flow. An alternative might be an electrical heater instead but it would probably take longer to thaw it out. Hopefully the suggestions might spark another solution. Thanks for the info on the drone batteries. It gives me an idea of possible uses and limitations for one. Continue to stay safe out there and enjoy the experience.

I would invest in a durable backpack with all essential survival gear for each of you including your dog.I'm your roadside gear I would suggest a good pair of jumper cables and also a couple rolls of rescue tape. I have used it to fix radiator hoses and even vacuum lines.

Hi Justin! Great Advice! Over the summer we made some changes to the garage area of the van and what you mentioned came to mind. We had our gear in bins but that wouldn't do us much good if we had to walk. We have two hiking backpacks that we now leave with our gear in them. One larger, one smaller. We've also added Canvas bags that can be thrown It the backpacks if we have to bug out. This was our first winter in the van in this video, certainly learning as we grow. Thank you for the kind comment, this winter we now have the confidence to take it further.If the borders open we are leaving Alaska. Kinda stuck right now, Have a great week!
