Those heaters are great and you don't need extra ventilation. I'm a trucker and have spent many a night with the heater blasting all night in the bunk, toasty as can be.

How much diesel fuel does that take to run for say 10 hours? Diesel is so expensive up here in Michigan, I can't imagine. Sometimes I think it's cheaper just to stay at a Motel 6.

Just a heads up, that 2nd carbon monoxide alarm should be lower than where you sleep. I love this van it looks so cosy and it’s the first van I ever drove my dad had one and we would travel a lot , Ireland to Germany was the furthest I went with him. We weren’t living in the van but it was huge there was so much room in the back so a couple of us could sleep at the same time while dad drove. Great times ❤. I’m watching van life videos a whole lot lately, the idea is appealing to me more and more. The toilet situation is off putting unless I were to find a van with a wee shower and toilet. The sleeping situation makes me feel it would be totally worth it. Thanks for sharing ❤

I used to sleep in a 1990 YJ soft top Jeep at that temperature on snowboard trips. Cold AF! No heater but i did make a sleeping platform out of a sheet of plywood so i could stretch out diagonally. After a few failed attempts (eg. freeeeezing nights) i figured out the recipe was to soak in the nearby hot springs, change into full thermals/puffer jacket/socks/beanie, etc eat hot food then get into my sleeping bag and try to pass out before my body temp dropped too much. Definitely not for the faint hearted but so glad I experienced it 🤙 I would have killed for your Sprinter! Glad to see you making the most of it.

-5 degrees celsius in a confortable car are nothing. Me and my only 12 years old son slept outside in bivouac (due to a snow tempest) without any shelter, just layed on the snow, on a mattress with down goose sleeping bag in Vercors mountains (French Alps) under 80km/h (50mph) wind and -9 degree celsius, and we did 4 nights trekking with snow shoes 6 hours a day in full food autonomy, and you have to make every day your water boiling ice or snow. Our mountaineer-climber sleeping bag (Alaska-cumulus brand) are confortable until -20 degrees celsius.

Pretty cool man. I do a lot of sleeping outside. I’m a wildland firefighter in California. We travel a lot and go to cold places at high elevation. Sleeping in a sleeping bag is warmer when your just wearing boxers. It’s freezing getting in but your body heat warms the bag the more cloths you wear the colder you get. Down or synthetic. I wish I could afford a 4x4 van Some day.

Nice setup. Only thing I might change is to extend the exhaust pipe so it is sticking completely out from under the van. That way you don't have to worry so much about the fumes building up under the van and finding their way inside. Personally, I have my exhaust similar to yours. However, I have an extender I put on it whenever I use it. Only takes a few seconds to slide it on or off.

I'd add another idea, you know how bridges freeze up before the roads because the air blows in under them. Make some side skirt panels that you can remove and keep in storage, and pull out and attach when parked for the night. Keep the wind from just blowing in underneath the vehicle. I could make a real difference in how hard your heater has to work to keep the vehicle warm.

Bend your exhaust so the output is out the side of the van. It is safer that way as the fumes are not under the van like you have it now. Second with it pointing forward like you have it it will get a lot of road grim and mud in it, potentially clogging it and causing issues with the heater running. Also when it is under the van it is hard to see if it is clogged by ice or mud, mine gets a lot of gunk on it. Finally it will be a little less noisy pointing away from the van. My heater is very quiet, the loudest part is the exhaust so I try not to park with anyone on that side.

@@hustlelife369 When I am sleeping with the furnace on I keep the windows and the roof vent closed. If installed correctly the furnace pulls in combustion air from the outside and exhausts the fumes outside as well making it perfectly safe. I do have, and strongly recommend, a smoke and co2 detector in the van. It should be battery operated with its own battery and not tied into the house electric system. I open the roof vent and a window when cooking. I will also open the roof vent in the morning for a while to dry the van out from any built up moisture.

Hi, greetings from London, UK. I just stumbled across your page, now subscribed! I love your van, and what a great idea that loo (washroom), you're well set up. For me I would love hot water bottle and layers and layers of blankets. What's the coldest wether you have campled in? The USA is well set up for this type of living, the UK doesn't have such good facilities. Take care and stay safe. x

Nice van set up. 👌 I love the diesel heater set ups. I have one in my Sprinter, but it doesn't get as cold here in Australia.

I love your van! I have a 2005 E350 Skooly..NO 4x4. 😞 but I want to see if I can install it myself. Awesome video. And you're correct about not needing to keep windows open with the diesel heater. As long as it exhausts properly, you're good to go. Your friend from NYC 🙏

Nice van nice video the noise of the heater would bother me though. I think about pointing the exhaust at the oil pan to preheat the engine try to capture as much energy as possible.

Thanks.. I had the window cracked open and the fan going so it was pulling in a lot of fresh air and it was really cold out so the heater fan was on high to keep up. Next time I’m going to try sleeping with the windows up. When the heater fan is on low you barely hear it… as for the exhaust pointing to the oil pad not sure if CO2 could somehow get into the van

@@hustlelife369 I wouldn't trust it either & I'm not so sure it would help alot anyway. Sprinters have 10 quarts of oil unlike a car with half that or less. A magnet type heater could be added to pan & plugged into a inverter with a switch. That would be alot safer but in reality these heaters started to help get diesels started 30 years ago when it was a problem. Rail systems avoid that trouble now & diesels start in the cold now. I definitely allow mine to warm up longer but they don't need heaters today. I love the idea tho & love hearing brains think. Safety 1st tho & especially when you're sleeping. 😎👍

From your license plate design you’re in Canada. From one Canadian to another I can safely say that this was a standard snow fall and was not a storm at all. REAL winter storms are storms that are so thick you can’t see anything from two feet in front of you.

-14 outside and 12 degrees inside the van after being shutted down all night, that's actually not bad! You just have to have a good blanket.
