Do you necessarily have to set it to TDC in order to change the tensioner with an ALBA? Other than to check and make sure the timing hasn’t skipped?

No you don't have to set the engine toTDC to replace the tensioner. We just showed how to check it for everyone to see. That engine was running GOOD but the chain smacking around was really bad on a cold start. Now if it the engine was missing out or idling funny or noisy, we would check timing for sure to make sure the slack in the chain hadn't found its way to in between the cams or crank and cams.

@@CrashCitySxS If the chain had skipped slightly and it was out of timing, how would you know? What would it sound like, or what would it look like when you pull that cover off? Thanks!

@@satherton it may still sound normal. You may hear it rattling really bad. It may not run right. It may have a ticking noise in it. Visually checking the cams would be off there marks with the head. Both or just one. Look for chain slack between cam gears and check for slack on the front side of the chain going to the crank. Opposite side of the tensioner.
