I am politely disagreeing to everyone who is saying that they were expecting something like melodrama or comparing melodrama to solar power because I think that we should never compare different pieces of arts presented by an artist as every piece of art they make has it’s own independent story, melodrama was easily one of the most amazing album but I think we should not compare it to solar power because it is an unique album in itself. For sure you are free to not like it, it’s not necessary to like everything that an artist presents but all I meant to say is it’s not wise to compare two albums from the same artist as both of them holds a unique place in the heart of the artist.

You do realize that it’s completely normal to compare albums by the same artist right? I’ve always been a Lorde fan and I can say that I am a little disappointed in this album, it’s lacking something that the other 2 had.

this album is going to take me years just like melodrama, i was seriously making reservations for this album because of the negative reviews, but it exceeded the expectations i originally had, melodrama 2.0 was the entire last thing i needed or wanted because i already squeezed every thing out of those. and this is ENTIRELY new

YES! I abused the hell out of Melodrama and got everything I needed out of it. I didn't need or want a sequel. I would have been disappointed had she done that. I love the nods she gives to Melodrama (e.g., the mention of "perfect summers" which ties back to Liability), but that's about it.

We didn't need melodrama 2.0 but this album doesn't feel like the evolution of her previous works. It's just so boring, lyrically weak and the thematic is just like "hey, i went to a spiritual retirement. Now listen to all my lifeless music i made in a fake maturity" this album could have work with more energy or as her 4th album, there' s a big gap between melodrama and this in all senses

I feel this is the best direction Lorde could have gone after Melodrama, its the happiest and most realistic continuation she could think of for her narrative. It is truly beautiful to see someone trying to connect to themselves again after a big breakup. This is her searching for her perfect places and saying "wtf are perfect places anyway?".

@@joseantoniogomezrodriguez1724 haha if you had paid attention to the lyrics you would be proved wrong again again for saying it is a "fake maturity album". Just because the sounds are more washed out and organic, doesn't mean it is trying to be mature. Yes, there's growth in the musical elements, but the secret is in the lyrics. The music is less poigntant than melodrama and still very mellow, her signature attribute. The lyrics are constantly telling you she still knows nothing, but al least she knows that now and she knows we all are the same way. These feelings are explored in the path, california, stoned..., secrets..., mood ring and oceanic feeling. And constantly ties this theme with the theme of being spiteful with who has done you wrong and forgiving them, like fallen fruit, dominoes, hold no grudge. And both these main themes are reflected again in the music with subtle hints of experimentation that doesn't always rubbs you the right way, and that's the idea. I think people discard this album just for not being as easy to consume as melodrama. This album is not directly telling you what is going on with its concept, it is not about solar power in a literal way, it's a metaphor for finding your own ways to cope with life.

Album Review : Solar Power, Lorde's new album has a very psychedelic 70s vibe to it. It would sound great for times you feel overwhelmed or thinking of many things as it feels like a blanket making you forget there are things that just happened. Yup, feels like a breakaway escape album but not always happy, just fine reflective. At first I thought I would be bored but as it progressed, it feels comforting. Very rare artists this generation would create this kind of concept album as usually the aim is for artists to compile potential hits and mix with fillers. This album feels like something you would like to listen in entirety and not as singles unlike songs from Melodrama where each could stand on its own. This could be a good or bad things - not much hits in the making but could have consistent listens to all tracks. I want to listen to it again after hearing it. Contrary to what other reviews said about the songs not being memorable, there is a magnet that would like you to revisit the songs. Lyrically I feel it tried to be more playful but keeping a reflective vibe. I would analyse again the lyrics as some said this is not the strongest suit of this album which is opposite of Lorde's element with writing great poetry. Many songs here didnt have strong hooks as her previous work especially with Melodrama nor as anthemic as songs from Pure Heroine. I think there's a purpose for this as Lorde's aim is not your current trend pop record. Some songs do sound very pop like Mood Ring and Secrets From a Girl (kind of my least favorites so far). The other thing I noticed here is that some songs felt unfinished (Leader of a New Regime) or sounded abruptly ended (The Man with the Axe) but it doesnt mean these are not good tracks as I like these - just surprised hey I am in a trance and it ends like a blink. For me, the best songs here are Oceanic Feeling (fell in love on first listen), Fallen Fruit (I like how the song progressed without getting too powerful and captured a good mix of the Lordes we heard), Stoned at the Nail Salon (it took me a few listens to get in love with this track and now I get why people adore it). Surprise maybe to some, I also liked Dominoes but I read some people think it's one of the weaker tracks but there's a hook here. California is on my lower half (songs like Axe and Leader felt stronger for me) - I just don't connect to it. Solar Power the title track seems to be the more accessible track to others with its fresh chill vibe but it does well with setting the tone after a good kickoff with The Path. Others commented she is strongest here vocally. I feel Melodrama had more power and fire but the harmonies here are lovely. She feels carefree, not lost. I think every fan will have different views but for me this is still Lorde. Not something ground breaking or shattering expectations but rather artistically tastefully made from an artist who is committed to growing. Make sure to check out her songs.

I'm all for singers changing and evolving and trying new stuff so I adore this. It's a summer album and it's a record you can just vibe too. Don't get me wrong I think it's okay to prefer one side of an artist more than another but I've seen some really weird comments (not here lol sorry apparently I just feel like ranting 🙈) & I just think you should always leave a door open for artists to try different stuff with an open mind. After all singers are creatives too and nothing kills creativity more than being stuck you know...Anyways totally loved your reaction 💙

So true. I was wondering why Solar Power isn't Track 1, but when I heard The Path I totally got why. Coming from such an album which everyone depended on (Melodrama), Lorde wanted to transition into something different and I guess she can't do that if her fans only want music they can throw their emotional baggages at.

Just like Billie Eilish's sophomore record, Solar Power ended up being better than i expected. The lyrics are beautiful, the vocals are enchanting and the production is great. And Solar Power certainly lives to it's title. Also, it's her most relatable album for me, since i'm two years younger than Ella. I think it will become one of my favorite albums of 2021. I really enjoyed your reaction, Steven! And thanks for sharing your thoughts on the things people are saying about all the incredible work artists like Lorde are putting out with Jack. It's so fucked up how people are putting everything on Jacks shoulders, for better or for worse, and pretending that the artists have no agency. Solar Power (track), for example, is only on the album as it is today because Lorde wanted; Jack wasn't sure about the production (she said it on an interview she gave to the nyt). It's quite great that even small artists like Clairo have been feeling comfortable enough with him to push their ideas foward. And, from the many interviews i've read where he is mentioned, that he listens and have faith on them. That must be why they're always open to work with him. And that must be why every project they put out together is so special; there's trust, love for the craft and patience on the making of it.

first 5 songs is about the journey/trip to the island/back to the simple life. In the middle of the song Fallen Fruit, it seems that the plane you’re in entered a dark cloud and exited a few seconds as the songs goes on again - as she sang on the lyrics “disappear in the cover of the rain”. In Secrets from a Girl, it’s like a welcome to the islang (metaphorically Lorde’s life) as Robyn says on the outro “Welcome to sadness…” Then the core of the album about Lorde’s life in so many aspects: The Man with the Axe, Dominoes, Big Star - all about her dog who passed away, her boyfriend. Then, Leader of the Regime transitions as she remembers her life in fame and asks who’s gonna be the next leader and mocking their toxic positivity, lust, and paranoia in Mood Ring In Oceanic Feeling, it’s about her new life and how she’s enjoying it! - she says on her e-mail, this album is a diary of hers. - i just think that the sun is a metaphor of a lot of things i this album.

If she had cut 2 songs in the second part of the album and replaced them with the bonus tracks, it would have made a stronger project. Or just released it 14 track standard. I could see _"Hold no grudge"_ being played everywhere. It's like the album aesthetic and feel with the harmonies and guitar but including the 808. Classic song structure: verse, bridge, chorus etc, with some Lorde tweaks. Can't miss the cicadas here.

hi steven!!! i really love your reaction to this album. the message in lorde's album is beautiful and it's amazing looking back at her past albums too because i grew up pure heroine and royals in high school. pure heroine a moody, non conforming very poignant. melodrama was feeling, going through emotions, relationships, herself, parties. solar power is learning to love and let go, to look after yourself and be aware of today's society (she sings of climate change in fallen fruit and talks about racial privilege in many interviews regarding mood ring!) . i love the woman she is becoming and her growth

you need to watch the music video for Mood Ring! in a letter to her fans she mentions that the song explores the tropes of people seeking wellness, enlightenment or utopia; this is satire! she’s channeling someone else (which is why she doesn’t even sound like herself).

Solar Power is Lorde's most raw vocals, most poetic lyrics, composition/production is different but very refreshing. while the whole vibe is calm, joyful, fresh but also sad and real. the album is a whole experience and those who can't appreciate it needs some growing.

There were definitely a few songs that I enjoyed first listen but I think I’m gonna have to give the whole album a few more listens in order to get into it a bit more. Maybe I’ll just listen to it a lot and force myself to like it just because it’s Lorde

I'm not in a headspace where I can necessarily connect with the lyrics of most of the songs. That being said, I know there will be a time in my life where I will come back to this album. The music, for me, didn't have enough of a pull to keep me coming back for a second listen. I know there's a lot of beauty in the words she wrote, but for now, I will have to give it time. I am absolutely happy that she is happy though! It's always great to hear people who are overcoming their struggles.

You said your life changed when you heard punk rock at 11 and I can relate. When I was 13 my sister played Ozzy for me for the 1st time. I literally went from wearing a shirt that said "boys bands rock" to an Ozzfest shirt. Ozzfest 2004 was my first concert. All original members of Black Sabbath performed. It was Geezers Birthday. I fell in love with Judas Priest that day. I listen to a ton of pop now but when people question my love of metal I can't stand it. Metal and Rock and Punk formed me. It's every bit a part of who I am. I just needed pop for a while cause I needed to dance around my room and shake all the crazy out of my head and body. Sometimes Ya just need pop. But metal is who I am.

Here's what I wrote to the local newspaper's critic who I felt - missed the mark completely. Far too many people critiquing this album are either comparing it with her past two projects, or worse still, with contemporary music without due consideration of any musical influences pre 2000. With all due respect and I mean ALL due respect, I'd like to offer a couple of ideas that may answer a few of the questions you had...... This Album is a sublime autobiography, love letter and thank you all rolled into one beautiful document. it is the most comprehensive, cohesive and complex ode to 60 years of musical styles, musical genres and specific artists all while sharing with us, her fans, the music that's bookmarked her life! What a precious gift!!! Literally every song is delivered flawlessly in multiple iconic vocal and musical styles that are both a tribute to specific artists, (sometimes just stylistically), but in almost every song, a tribute to a specific album, song AND lyric or refrain all at once. It's genius! To produce an album that's going to remind older folk like me of times long forgotten whilst telling her own story. That concurrently shares the musical influences of her life's journey to date with her contemporaries who may never ever have heard the music from the '60's and '70's that went onto influence the Pop stars of the future - is GENIUS!!! To be blunt, in my humble opinion - this is the most complicated, complex and comprehensive compendium of 60 years of "Pop" music ever produced in a single Album. This album will keep giving to every listener for decades to come because it's handed her fans THE KEY to a life times journey in music.
