Calling it now that Unplugged is easily gonna be your favorite. Speaking of the Pavement influence, there's an extra track called Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through the Strip that's basically their version of a Pavement jam

In Utero takes a while to grow on you - Milk It, Pennyroyal Tea, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter and Tourettes are growers and once they get their hooks in they become some of the best Nirvana songs. Its wild because they purposely left off some of the more accessible tracks from the session like Sappy, I Hate Myself and I Want to Die, and Marigold and instead chose to include more difficult, noisier songs. It pays off over time. In Utero is still intriguing to me after listening to it for 30+ years, and there are very few albums I could say that about.

You should check original steve albini version of heart-shaped box. It’s on the 2013 deluxe edition of In Utero by Albini, it’s an incredible album mixing for me. Steve said that the 2013 mix sounds like you’re hearing the band right in the studio.

It's been a long while since I read up on my Nirvana lore, but I'm pretty sure Kurt wrote about 50% of the Nevermind and In Utero songs over summer 1990. Pretty prolific. Also, You might like the In Utero b-side "Marigold" in paricular, it was one of Dave Grohl's songs they worked on. A very cool track.

The mixing is a weird history. The band was pleased with the album but the label was terrified of it, fearing it would turn off all the fans who found the band through Nevermind. The band refused to re-record the album but decided to have Litt re-mix the planned single tracks (Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, and Pennyroyal Tea). - The original German LP pressing features all Albini mixes. - The US pressings feature the Litt mixes of Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies. - The US Walmart version features the above, plus the Litt mix of Pennyroyal Tea. - The 2013 Anniversary edition received a new supplemental mix of the album by Albini The Pennyroyal Tea single was due to be released in April '94, the month Kurt died. The single would feature the B-side "I Hate Myself and Want to Die", so the release was scrapped. However not all copies were destroyed leading to the few surviving CDs to command very high prices on the collectors market.

Very Ape and Milk It get better the more you listen. Pennyroyal Tea is a good song as well…but we all know music is subjective!

I love In Utero and I want to say it's better than Nevermind but when listening back to back I almost always give the edge to Nevermind. That said I think In Utero gets better with every listen while Nevermind is epic on your first listen and leaves itself less room to grow on you.

It was their label idea to do the remixes, because they found Albini's work too raw and the band caved. They've later release another edition without the remixes. Alex, you should check out the band Shellac, which is Steve's main band. They're pretty good.

Radio Friendly Unit Shifter can be better appreciated live, for example “Live and Loud” concert on youtube

I much prefer In Utero. The tracks you didn't like so much are my favorites actually with the exception of Penny Royal Tea. This album get's better with further listening. IMO

This album stands with the holy bible as the darkest albums ever on the fact that the emotions stated are incredibly real. My only wish is that I wish they could have done another album, it would have supposedly been in model of “automatic for the people” which would have been phenomenal.

Ok Alex . When this album came out and played the damn new casset at home while MTV was blasting " Heart shaped Box " video every hour . We did not know Kurt was gonna kill himself . It was brutal . Is very hard to listen this album sometimes for us old gen x . But sometimes . Sometimes . The silly songs and playful attitude . Helps enjoy. Is the lost of innocence album . Good review Alex

Excuse me, but you said gRape me is not as good as the first 3? Wow! That is something so great about music. My opinion would be the exact opposite, with Heart Shaped Box being a possible tie with it. Very cool video and cool commentary btw.

Lol that’s funny Alex. I’m way younger than you and grew up hearing the In Utero singles. Admittedly I didn’t finally hear the album until last year tho.
