Great review and very honest and accurate! I listened to it 3 times back to back! These songs are growers.. better with each listen.. It's so refreshing to hear the Smashing pumpkins make an album like this again... I think it's a triumph.. like you I'd love to see what a different proven producer could have turned this into .. I think it's really good! 7.5 for me!
@thegodbombs3 ай бұрын
Yep I think 7.5 was more accurate but I’d just given Manson’s new single 7.5 😂 yes I agree the pendulum is swinging back in a good way for this band and it’s a triumph

I'm listening to this album and kind of going back and forth between the golden era and this new album. It's not bad, but for BC to say it's a return to the SD/MC era, it is a big statement. Honestly, one of the main problems is his voice. He's still him, but he just can't get that sense of earnesty in his voice anymore. Songs like Who Goes There and Goeth The Fall come close spund wise, but the vocals just fall flat. I think it may be the sound mix, I love his voice, but it needs to be more of an instrument and less of a showcase, Just listen to a song like Bodies or Jellybelly. There is a lush mix in everything that creates this vibe. His vocals crack a little sometimes, but it adds to the charm. The sound change kind of started on Adore and really came full force on Machina. Anyways not a bad album but nowhere near the classic sound.

I agree with this I think you pretty much nailed it overall, it was like an attempt at nostalgia but then the new elements kind of made it a bit flat and awkward. Yet still just hearing them rock out is impressive. If they could just get a producer to really nail the tape sound and stop with the digital crispness it's not working for them because they are at their best when they can evoke nostalgic feelings/emotions and this digital up front voice is not working with that.

Important to note, we were never promised SD2. What the band did was go back to the mindset of how they recorded the 90s albums, it was never going to be those albums. It’s been 30+ years!!!
@thegodbombs3 ай бұрын
@@controloz3310 it was a sequel in theme and scope more than a musical sequel I guess but let’s be honest who was really following the story of Glass across Mellon Collie and Machina I & II?? I mean D’Arcy even said the rest of the band had no idea Mellon Collie was a “concept album” and by Machina they were all fighting and checked out and Billy basically finished it as a labor of love to the fans.

I love this new album but people will always criticize because they are looking for an SD or MCIS, wake up friends, we are no longer in the 90s and the band is now more than 50 years old...I am very happy that they continue making music

I agree 100% with your review. It's a 7 or 6.5 The Guitars and drums sound great. And glad they at least went back to that format. But still the songs aren't very catchy or rememberable. But a solid 45 min. rock album. I can really hear a Perfect Circle vibe to it too.The album's cover as well lol could be the James Iha influence, since he played with them for a long time.

Glad you are back❤. Now SP is top still for me personally. It's about being open really. It's about first being closed sometimes and still give the track another go. Personal preference and being knowledgeable in music and what works songwise can help but if you just compare and are not open to the record the loss is yours.

It's bland.A lot of the samey metallic sound he repeats on album after album.No dynamics.That seems to ge the case with the past 5 releases.The sunny tones of Hummer,Whir,99 Floors or That's The Way.Its the same high vocals he's been torturing his fans with the last 20 years.I have held off buying any releases for the past 5 records because of how bland the writing and production are.

Bingo. I'm glad someone else realizes how bad Billy's songwriting (and voice!) has gotten over the last 20 years. Machina was the last great SP album (and machina 2). It's been downhill ever since. Even zwan and the self-titled album had some of the 90's billy in them. Zeitgeist was where the awful vocals and bland songwriting became really noticeable. I still listened to it and forced myself to like it. After that I didn't bother. RIP SP
