Alcohol is such an accepted part of our society due to a powerful alcohol lobby and most health professionals partaking. It’s important to understand that the best amount for your health and running performance is none. Coach Brad goes over some tips to help navigate alcohol as a runner.

I was a crazy 6’1” 230lb alcoholic for most of my adult life (21-36). I quit drinking and smoking 3 1/2 months ago and have recently started running thanks to the inspiring videos on this channel and others. I’ve dropped 20 lbs so far and my cardio health feels substantially better. Hats off to you if you are the kind of person who can have just one or two. Personally, I didn’t drink everyday, but if I was drinking it was definently to an excess. Thanks for the continued inspiration!

Now I'm not here to preach to anybody about the perils of alcohol. Anything in moderation is perfectly ok. As a non-runner, I initially cut out alcohol when I spontaneously decided to train for a 10k race. Now been teetotal for 2744 days. It was a bit awkward at first but it is the best decision ever made. I can now tackle problems with a clear head and that means so much. Quite difficult for me to gage the training benefits of no alcohol. Life is for living. Unless you're a professional athlete, the odd alcoholic drink is ok. Anything in moderation, as I said earlier.
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting Colin. Unfortunately for some people ‘moderation’ is not ok when it comes to alcohol. As a society we have to be supportive of anyone who chooses not to drink while understanding the harm that excessive alcohol consumption has on our communities. Thanks again for continuing this conversation

You are so right about the damages the alcohol does in your body specially on a runner. I had the bad experience of having a few beers the day before a 5K. I was so dehadrated, I almost passed out during the race. It was awful and scary. Never again. It is not worth it. I have changed my eating habits and barely no alcohol. Excellent information, thank you.

I drank every night for most of my adult life but decided to stop for th month of January this year. The benefits, particularly in quality sleep were so great that I have not had a drink since. Ka pai Coach Brad, great to get the message out. I've noticed some of these things myself, most obviously that my body spends its energy processing the alcohol out of my system instead of repairing muscles, so I'm always sore the day after a run if I've had even a single beer that evening. Also noticed my heart rate up 5 to 8bpm, and it's all too easy to become a nightly habit in these sunny arvos leading up to Xmas. Listened to a super interesting podcast about alcohol by Andrew Huberman last week. It's even worse than I knew. I'm on day 11 of zero alcohol and hope to keep it that way. Cheers, Amy, Welly

I believe most things in moderation. I avoid alcohol the day before a race, and rarely drink more than twice a week. (Usually less. ) It's a bit like restricting carbs... whatever benefits there might be don't offset the enjoyment lost. I try to avoid extremism in all things. (Odd thing for an ultra runner to say. 😆)

Having ADHD I couldn't run a mile on the road. I need the trails to keep my mind active and constantly engaged. With that said I have never run a trail without an edible first. For years I ate high dose mg edible before my trail runs now I'm down to about 5mg with 5mg CBD and usually do a two hour trail run in the east bay. On Special occasions I may add a micro dose of mushrooms. I don't get crazy high but I do get a lifted/calm sense

I thought I was an expert at handling alcohol until it started wearing my Garmin watch during sleep. I know it is an estimate as opposed to a true assessment, but my HRV plummets with even one beer. This persists throughout the night and affects the sleep even if I consume the beer around 5 or 6:00 p.m. I have significantly limited my alcohol exposure since then. I wish I would have had that insight, and your advice, earlier in life!

I agree that we are not pro atletes but I think the message and the advice is very good. A runner also ran marathon while smoking and ran a marathon without problem. But that doesn't mean smoking is good for you. That is the same with alcohol. I guess it will be harder for you to do the same in 10 years. I was in the army when I was young and I could drink and get very drunk and run the day after. Now I can still run the day after but I really have to run very slow.
