Walter, great reaction. This is a masterpiece of musical interpretation and storytelling. It's the epitome of what The Warning does so well. They write music to fit the feel they want to convey and they are brilliant at it. There was so much on the line in reinventing this anthem but they not only delivered I can't listen to the original and not hear their version now. One week. They had one week to break down and create this epic version with them in Mexico and Alessia in Canada and yes, they play EVERY part. In fact, you should check out the live at Teatro Metropolitan from 2022. Dany sings the majority of the song live and it hits even harder!

When they got asked to do this project. Metallic told them not to just cover the song but to mix it up. Turn it inside out or even backwards. Only rule they had to keep the lyrics. The Warning did some research and discovered that Metallic wrote “Enter Sandman” as a Children’s Lullaby. That’s why they slowed it down and made it more haunting. Oh by the way. When they got word to do this song. They only had 10 days to get it back to Metallica for approval. They got it done in 7. Rearrangement and recorded. All while they were in Mexico and Alessia was in Canada.

This one blew me away when it first came out. I have to admit, I am not a Metallica fan, and I was sick of this song, until this version came along. A lullaby where Alessia very sweetly puts you to bed, then Dany rouses the troops, Pau shares a little prayer, and the angel chorus comes to sing you to sleep, then Boom, the hammer drops. I think of this very much as the female version of the tale. So good. Delicate, powerful, soothing, strong, gentle, fierce-all at the same time. I love this one. It takes a lot of courage to completely re-imagine a song as well-known as ES, but holy cow did they hit it out of the park here. And how the heck to only three pieces make that ending sound so full and strong.

It's on the same level as Jonny Cash Hurt, and Disturbed The Sound Of Silence. The Warning just aren't as big as them (yet) so people don't realize.

To me it sounds quite different but for those more musically astute they can tell you that much of the original is still very much present, just hiding in plain sight behind some timing changes and other clever alterations that may not be apparent at first listen. To me that highlights the brilliance of the piece even more.

Alessia is a Grammy winning (best new artist 2018) Canadian pop singer-songwriter. She was approached by Metallica to do a cover for the Blacklist album but reportedly didn’t feel comfortable doing it herself. She shares the same international management as The Warning so someone suggested the collaboration. Because of the pandemic, they collaborated over the internet to complete the project. Alessia did make a surprise guest appearance to perform the song with the band live at a show in LA (The Troubadour) last year. 😎👍

Ale was unable to the prayer here as she was recuperating from wisdom teeth surgery. In concert Dany does the prayer because Pau is playing a different beat. In the original Ale did cute; here Pau does creepy!

another thing about the 2014 cover is the prayer was said by both Pau and Ale... Ale was repeating after Pau... sadly Pau's mic was a bit low and it made it hard to hear her... there's also that weird static mesh of noise which sounds like a wireless headset resyncing or something... but yeah! the cover prayer was "cute" mode and the MV with Alessia is more "Creepy"... especially with that Steven Spielberg-esque head wobble with some skipped frames when she starts the prayer... gives me chills every time i hear it! i'm not sure how to describe Dani's prayer when she does it live... certainly aggressive... maybe foreboding, too? either way, it also gives me chills down my spine... @@WaldoKitty Pau’s low mic was on purpose. It was supposed to mimic a parent coaching a child through the prayer. The focus was intended to be the child - Ale. The reason Ale did not do the prayer in the MV is that Ale was recovering from wisdom teeth surgery when they recorded the audio. In live concerts Dany does the prayer because Pau is not on the same beat.

Metallica actually asked them to participate in this and especially asked all 53 artists to do whatever they wanted with the songs... Alessia Cara and The Warning turned it into the creepy and demented lullaby it was originally meant to be!

They were invited by Metallica to participate in the Blacklist album, that was released for the 30th anniversary of Metallica's Black album and they were specifically asked to go for it and not just do a straight cover. They were invited last minute and had a week to re-arrange, record, mix and master the song. In spite of this, out of the 53 covers on the Blacklist album, with mostly well established artists, to me their cover was by far the best of the bunch.

I like how creative this remake is, and it shows what kind of guts all 4 ladies had in making it -- I've heard that Lars/Metallica said to do anything to the song, just keep the lyrics the same but it had to be a bit nerve racking! And they created this under a major time crunch, which maybe helped keep them from tinkering or second-guessing themselves.

The instructions from Metallica for the Blacklist album were to twist it inside out, upside down, and make it original while staying true to the lyrics. These ladies did that better than almost anyone else who participated in that project. Next step for you is to see the final evolution of this song in how they play it live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX. Yep, Ale is the tallest now at about 5'6".

Thanks for your reaction Walter! Their version of this song and the video has grown on me more and more over time, really love it now. But their live version with Dany doing the lead vocal and Alessia having a harmony part, on a track, is still tops for me. Plus I just love Pau’s high harmony when done live🔥🤘⚡️

This must be the only song you have heard off the Blacklist LP. This is not a cover. It's their Respectful, Tasteful, Beautifully Crafted, Re-imagined Version, as asked by Metallica to do. TW did take more liberty than most all other Major Artists from around the world did for this, and it has paid off in spades.

So you state the Metallica Blacklist is a big deal, which is an easy assumption, but you had no idea why it exists or what it was about? How blind does a "blind reaction" have to be? I think some reactors are overdoing the avoidance of information beforehand. You weren't curious about Alessia Cara? She has 4.39M subscribers on KZbin. I had at least heard of her and had heard some of her music before this collaboration, and that knowledge didn't ruin any surprises for me. Other than that, the reaction was okay I guess.
