Higgins hit the snooker scene in late 60s early 70s, and was like a breath of fresh air..with his high tempo style, and his swashbuckling spontaneous approach ,...the snooker world had never seen anything like him,..players of the time were slow careful and methodical,...where as Higgins was like a blur arround the table,...a nervous, twitching robust and dynamic genius fizzing balls all around the baize, with speed and energy......as an incredible shot maker,.. a master of his trade.......the word genius is banded around to freely nowadays.....but Higgins was just that,....a total natural, who played with heart and passion,..and on his day ...unbeatable.....a flawed genius, yes....but a truly great player

I do believe that he was the most naturally gifted player in the entire history of snooker (and that means better than Joe Davis, Steve Davis, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump etc etc). Higgins was reckless at times - but that's why we went to see him. He was brilliantly entertaining. Players like Terry Griffith, Ray Reardon and Cliff Thorburn were so superbly tactical but not as exciting to watch. Sometimes, i want to see a slow, tactical match and try and "think along" with the player and that's when you **don't** want to watch Alex Higgins... Higgins was hugely instrumental in making snooker such a widespread sport. (Steve Davis too, because he was the embodiment of cool, collected, skilled, elegant and calculating). We, the public, have been so privileged to see players of this skill level.

Alex was a genius. He was made famous by the media for his "outrageous" behavior. However, the part that the idiot media missed was that there has never been - before or since - a snooker player of his quality.

Ronnie grew up watching both Davies and Higgins and became arguably the perfect hybrid of perfect consistent cueing and eccentric exciting shot making. Higgins was so raw though he was electrifying to watch when he was on fire. No other player will ever be like him.

kenny moore mike travis Alex was hyped as the people's champion but he also brought the game into disrespect. That's right Alex, you can only get those kind of shots around about that many times out of ten, sometimes more, but yeah, that varies, some of us know that you did it to entertain but it would cost you frames; so course you had to play safe when needed to win. Certainly bought the game alive and the atmosphere round you, that's important. Never forgotten and sad that you're gone and Snooker sure misses you too xx

Hi, a great player, but good to watch but only made 78 century breaks and never a maximum break in tornaments Hendry, Davis, made hundreds as have many of the modern players and O'sulllivan over 1000 century breaks who is the best player ever and would beat half of the old Pro's playing left handed. These are facts. I am sure if Higgins had drunk and smoked less and been fitter he would have won a lot more, Mike.R
