This film is an achievement on so many levels. Although it won for Oscar documentary, it could stand up as Best Picture easily. There is no film like this and there may never be another one for a long time. Alex's achievement is monumental but so was the filming and story-telling. It has lifted the standard for documentary - a great win for this category of film. We need more documentary and less superhero movies.

Ugh. She's so amazing and beautiful. I watch random interviews and appearances of Alex, and almost every one he makes it a point to mention how struck he was when he finally got to see this stuff, her reaction, in particular. And, it being so fresh in their relatively early relationship at this point, especially compared against his life-long goal that the whole documentary is about, it's understandable. Even if it is difficult to watch. Clearly he's doing something right, they're still together to this day. 👍

The few things I REALLY want to know more than anything are: a)What went through Alex's mind when he all of a sudden came across a unicorn on his ascent? b) What, if anything, did they all say to each other? c) What did the unicorn guy and his buddy think and say to each other after Alex strolled through their camp? Has anyone even found or interviewed those 2 guys? Anyone know? I'm literally dying to find all this out and I have a feeling that many who saw this awesome film are wondering the same thing too.

while acknowledging his amazing achievements, I can't help but feel sorry for her... I can't imagine loving and dreaming of building a life with a person who'd risk their life like this. In the movie he tells her he feels no obligation to quit taking these risks just because she's in his life. I understand his passion and his need to do this, and that it's his choice and also her choice to be with him. but it's heartbreaking to see and to think he doesn't value her and her love as much as he values reaching goals.
@raziell5 жыл бұрын
You saying he doesn't value her as much as he values reaching his goal shows you don't understand his passion. People like him are on a different gear than normal people. As a comment below me has said. They have conviction. Sometimes that is stronger than a conventional love for one person. And if she doesn't understand that and i think she does, she shouldnt be with him period
@donaldvanvliet90394 жыл бұрын

What he does is truly based on genetics with his unusually large hands which allows him super grip strength. Even the most experienced & talented climbers would love to free climb like Alex but they know physically their grip strength just can’t reach Alex’s grip level no matter how much they try and strengthen their hands
@gustavmiedema36853 жыл бұрын
He has said in the past there are many climbers that outdo him physically. His strenght and build isn't exceptional compared to other professional climbers or anything. Furthermore, large hands don't result in super grip strength. Strength is partially genetic, but largely training training and more training. This dude is an absolute machine because he spends more time on vertical surfaces than on horizontal ones.

I love this I watched it several times since dvr'ing it sunday and see more and more each time I watch it. Well done well done congrats to everyone involved. Revealing aspects of Honnold's psyche emerged in the scene where Alex basically says that anyone can be happy what good get's done from being happy, life is all about performance. Juxtapose this to the scene where Tommy asks alex if he ever puts in his journal " I saw a beautiful juniper tree". Alex has accomplished the impossible feat and I hope he can direct his energy in obsessive fashion to the many other aspects of life to be had. I have no doubt that free soloing is pure exhilaration, but this movie highlights the many others who love alex and want to see him live and pass on his knowledge and caring to others.
