This was hands down the highlight of my year. Still pinching myself and so grateful he did this. Alex brought so much value to my students, their commitment to their businesses and their grasp of the hard work and dedication it takes to start and run a business after this lecture was incredible. They referenced Alex many times throughout the process and they grafted hard to validate their businesses. They knocked on doors (in Texas), braved getting shut down by the police, took to the streets, lakes, and parks of Austin to make face to face sales. They hammered email and phone outreach. It was inspiring to watch. Of the 8 groups, 2 are taking their businesses forward after this semester, they generated $1066 in revenue between the 5 that were able to make sales, and almost all still want to be entrepreneurs, even though they got a taste of just how hard it is, they feel more confident to go and do this for real. Thank you Alex. You showing up like this proves how committed you are to supporting entrepreneurship. It was an absolute honor.

Just leaving a note for myself @ 28:12 : The 8 Ways to Promote Your Business (generate leads) 1) Reach out to people who know you 1:1 and ask if they know anyone interested in your business. 2) Make content about what your business does on social media. (long-term strategy) 3) Reach out to people who don't know you 1:1 (cold calls, cold emails, door-knocking) 4) Run paid ads. (radio, direct mail, Tiktok, Hulu, Facebook, KZbin, etc.) 5) Get your customers to refer new customers. 6) Get your employees to refer new customers. 7) Hire an agency to promote your business for you. 8) Affiliates. *Additional note: Options 1-4 can be done by a single person (yourself usually). Options 5-8 are done with the help of others.

A bunch of notes I took for myself: ------ Learning means same circumstance different behavior High IQ means changing behavior quickly Best decisions: which is the best risk adjusted return? stack skills on top of one another Use what you got to get to your goal- even if it’s negative. Turn your weaknesses into fuel. Use your terrible upbringing or amazing upbringing - whatever it takes. You don’t want to be paying ignorance debt and financial debt off at the same time Partner can’t be your buddy. they need to have Time skill or money that you don’t have. Biggest mistake biz owners is picking the wrong partner. Don’t pick someone if you can just pay them hourly. 8 ways to promote. 4 and 4 1) ask someone you know 2) make content public 3) ask people you don’t know 4) paid ads Half of the day is doing the above. 5) And ask them if they know anyone don’t always pitch people directly. 6) customers get you other customers 7) employees get you people 8) affiliates- similar biz audience as you All businesses started in debt- just sometimes not financial debt Give away the thing for free at first. In exchange for testimonial and ideally referral. If no one wants to come back after you’ve done he thing for free- ask them why and improve. Usually it’s because the hidden cost of hiring you was high- time they spent on you, effort or sacrifice. You work for free until you’re so busy you need to charge a lot to lower demand (hack the supply demand curve) The smaller you are the more intimate sales should be so you can learn language and pains and patterns directly which you can then abstract in marketing later on. Pay the ignorance debt as soon as possible. Why aren’t you making $10M a year? Success is more a character trait than IQ. “Just confront the hard work” Ask myself why I am not doing it. Confront it. Ask myself if it’s worth being poor for. 4 hours of prospecting per day sucks. But so does being poor. Which one sucks more?

Two things that can really help with decision making, I think, is 1) actually being conscious of the decisions that you're making so you can adjust what your typical reflex would be, and then 2) have an understanding of your vision and values so that you can determine whether or not that decision is in line with moving closer or further away to being in alignment with those things. For example, if I wanted to be a completely present father who is always available for my children, that would mean that a high paying, high demand profession or opportunity is likely to be very penalising to my well-being and self-esteem as they wouldn't be able to co-exist.
