Awesome breakdown, the part about pereira being comfortable rolling with shots in the pocket is one of his best attributes I think, that’s why his pressure is so intense
@windytv75112 ай бұрын
I mean did you see the 4th round head movement. He fought like he spars. So comfortable it’s unreal
@garrusv2 ай бұрын
He's able to be that confident because he knows he has more power in his hands than his opponents.
@nieljohnson79432 ай бұрын
I think a key to Pereira's striking is that he always keeps his hands low at range, and he'll raise his hands when the distance is closed, it's like he literally just says I'm not going to waste the energy of holding my hands up until its a close range situation, at distance he can't be bothered to waste the energy
@wszczeklypiesz2 ай бұрын
His energy conservation is superb. When he evades punches by moving backwards he is always very conservative, never goes too far out of range, not only so he can counter right after, but he also doesn't waste enegy with big movements in and out like some fighters tend to do. For example Izzy tends to evade far and end up with back against the cage having to circle out. Whittaker does those big blitzes in and out, crossing a huge distance with each one, same with DDP and his unorthodox footwork which almost looks like stumbling. Pereira never does any of this, he's all about those tiny, efficient steps. That's how he managed to stay dangerous in every round even when cutting massive amounts of weight to get down to MW.
@wszczeklypiesz2 ай бұрын
The way he worked to time the jabs in rounds 1 and 2 and found it in round 3 was such a striking masterclass. Kickboxers aren't usually known for having a great jab and even for boxers it's often very hard punch to master but Pereira was exceptional with it. Incredible to watch. Also his defense - it's sometimes funny how commentators keep saying that he got hit when he rolls with punches or just avoids them by walking and/or leaning backwards, but he sometimes does it so subtly and fast that it might be hard to notice not on video.

Him using his shoulder after he punches to help decide if he wants to attack or disengage is a high level boxing tactic. It's call framing. You can frame without actually touching your opponent. Just having that In-between you and your opponent is a great use of defense.

Fun breakdown. Pereira's ability to land his jab both inside and outside Roundtree's guard showed his incredible striking IQ. At one point, he play-fought Roundtree's lead hand, and jabbed Roundtree hard without pulling his hand back. It pissed Roundtree off and he lunged forward with a left-hook. The mistake Rountree made was he was trying to counter-strike after getting hit, which was forcing his body weight on his back heel, and leaving his punches way short. Pereira would lean back, then spring forward into a follow-up strike.

Pereira is so comfortable rolling in the pocket, but that’s where he’s there to be hit as well. That’s why I think Izzy’s win was so impressive. He knew to aim for the two places Alex presents openings, his stomach and his temple. Izzy had a good body kick he was throwing, and he was throwing a few leg kicks so it wouldn’t only be his legs getting fucked up. In the pocket, Izzy threw out a dummy jab then blasted the overhand right to the temple, the biggest opening Pereira leaves in the pocket.
@tigercrush22532 ай бұрын
Alex also does a great job of keeping his range when he pulls. He doesn’t bail so far that he can’t counter punch, so when guys wing on him, they get punished. The last few exchanges in round 4 were beautiful pull counters, but he had pulled out too far, Khalil might have had a chance to recover. Great breakdown, love Alex’s style

another important point to mention about alex was his footwork in coordination with his “long-guard” defence. he’s light on his feet and slides just out of range as roundtree explodes in to further protect himself from shots. sweet stuff

1:50 also this lets him be adaptive to wrestling. I think he’s getting ready for that, if you make a good read in that 1:50 , frame, you can pivot away from single legs really well. On the balls on your heel. Go ahead and try it, think of that foot and helps like a door hinge. See it play out in real training. It’s weird and crazy

Beautiful! I feel like another thing he does is lure you into a false sense of security by staying in your range without throwing the punch he wants to land at every opportunity. I think Roundtree did really well against this specifically as he was staying out of range in the early 2 rounds. But when you're tired and get your legs kicked out from under you, you begin to allow the opponent into your range more often, and I feel like that's deadly with Pereira.

@@axe12yearsago it takes two to dance. When the other person is high level, doesn't open up much, and is always evading you, its tough to actually fight them in the cage without getting countered. We've seen Cory open up before and he's fun to watch. But Umar was too conservative for Cory to open up with. That's when we get the slow "jab, feint, kick" match for 15-25 mins.
