"Grenzen"= Granițe/Hotare (Sanskrit)/ Limite (Latin), in Romanian......never thought about it........

While I agree for the most part with the message you all are trying to spread, could it have not hurt to put an actual Korean flag rather than the flag of the DPRK to represent Korean? That's the equivalent of using the Soviet flag in post-Soviet countries. It's offensive and doesn't represent the people in the slightest, only a party minority. Aside from that extremely offensive mishap, great work.

This talk is so inspirational to someone like me who also has the purpose in life to connect people through language. Muchas gracias Alex y espero sigas esparciendo este mensaje de compasión y de respecto de esa forma tan eloquente cómo sólo alguien con tu trasfondo cultural podría 🙏

Love how that woman called him out on being supposedly "hypocritical" even though she learned English basically meaning she's biased.

46:41 That's very true, as long as other cultures or I'd say countries especially keep playing along English is going to continue playing the role of link language in various fields. If people from non English entertainment themselves tend to produce English content then it's not something that can easily change. But slowly non English content too is seeing a rising demand which is great & can keep optimism alive.

I respect Alex. In this case, the audience is smarter than Alex. Without the "Grenzen", there wouldn't be other languages. If there were no borders than the world would shift over to english for the sake of convenience. Don't demonize english just because it's popular. En ek sê dit omdat engels my tweede taal is en omdat dit vir my die kans gegee het om ander tale ook te leer deur middel van engels. The "Language Communism" or "forcing equality" is not realistic and would require strict laws against many popular languages in order to support smaller less useful languages. This is simply reality.

No border? No country, i.e. the death of the nation-state. Having no borders may free up a little time and money for your travel however borders have kept our nations unique and defined for centuries. Moving throughout Europe is already so easy...

So many inaccuracies and generalisations and judgement. Maby Amy and her family just wanted a break to relax for a few days, and were not looking for a learning experience. Surely tolerance should include tolerance fo the monolingual and the tourist. Each unto their own. And the truth is that monolinguals are a polyglot's dream. A Swedish man told me that if you want to speak real Swedish you have to speak with the older generation who didn't learn English, and whose Swedish is not peppered with it. Why is it ok for you to say that no-one should go to the place you went to in Greece, in order to leave it undisturbed, but that what is great about London is that, by your own admission, it has become a place that no-one belongs to? I enjoy talks on language learning, but not this political, agenda pushing . Also there are thousands of languages in the world, and no-one has the time to learn them all. Anyone who speaks thirty languages is considered exceptional, or so too someone who speaks a "mere" ten. Many people struggle to learn just one. So a global language is actually what brings people together. If you don't want it to be English, choose another one. Personally I think that it should be Yiddish, as it is the only natural language that is not territorially based. What does it mean Alex when you say that we should make sure that people learn the "right" languages? Do you not afford others the freedom of choice you hold so dear? Alex, with all due respect, you should learn about the fundamentals of democracy, some Constitutional and Administrative law, the political ramifications of the structure of the EU and also about its Nazi roots. (And I am not monolingual. I love languages, but not their politicisation.).

The women who brought up the point that Rawlings does most of his communicating over the internet and in published form using English made a staggeringly good point. Doctor heal thyself and start using different tongues while tweeting and maybe publish a tome in a language other than English and never mind saying that it is your native language: the people who have learned not a single language and are dead set against doing so would also ask why they need to learn a foreign language when everyone knows English . It almost makes foreign language learning seem like little more than a hobby of little utilitarian value.

He's a native English speaker, it's not his responsibility or duty to produce content in any language but his mother tongue, and that's the point. (Also he worked for Memrise, so... What are you talking about?)

That woman was just bitter because she probably spent years learning English and can't handle the fact that she's being told to be more diverse. He's a native English speaker and his best Language is English so why on earth would he write a book in a different language? He was making a good point and not to mention his entire following is English speaking, so telling his English speaking community to focus on other languages is totally logical.

Tbh, Alex is a good speaker, for the record I bought his book, but it is exhausting to be constantly shoveled propaganda from one political side. Sadly this talk could have been about his unique story, instead it’s about a temporary political issue, which only divides his audience. People voted, you lost, let it go.
