Break this down and it’s even more brilliant: he gets up and mimes tossing the ball to a ref, like normal, only there’s no ref in that direction, so he tucks and jogs to the sideline. He then looks to his left at a ref he almost certainly sees in his peripheral, but waits until he’s screened by one of his own guys, letting him claim that he looked for a second ref but never saw one. Next, a ref calls out to him from behind, but he never hears him. You can see that ref throw his hands out in disbelief, indicating he felt he should have been heard. Finally, that same last ref is forced to wave the clock stopped, and homeslice glances back, sees it, and smiles a lovely Colgate smile....no, not Colgate, that’s the fucking Cheshire Cat who just ate the canary. Well played, sir.

Smith was out of the pocket, so if he'd had like another half a second even, he could've just also hucked the rock into the bleachers or at the dirt in front of him and it would've actually stopped the clock on an incomplete pass call. But given that he didn't have the opportunity, this was a top tier split second decision.

Imma keep saying this would it be ok for recievers to do this on the final drive in the 4th quarter to extend the game?
@rhombo3233 жыл бұрын
@@its12gagebruh31 depends on circumstance. If it was just the next down (2nd or 3rd) than it should be delay of game, there is no reason the ball should need to be swapped out(unless it's like caked in mud or something). But in a situation like this, where it is a transition to a different squad -special teams- where a different ball is used under normal circumstances, I believe is perfectly reasonable. Maybe bending the rules a little, but more like using the way the rules are written and structured to your advantage. If the refs cannot produce a "live ball" for the play to begin, it is and administration error on the refs. It is the refs job to facilitate the handing of the ball between plays, and legaly the clock cannot expire when the administration is in control of the time of play, aka, when teams are set and waiting on the refs to set the ball on line of scrimmage and begin the start of the down.

Yes, but in hurry up situations, the special teams unit uses the game ball, all NFL QBs know this. That's what the refs were expecting so they didn't bother getting a kicking ball. Alex outsmarted them by keeping the ball they were gonna use and forcing them to take a TO to find a new one.

Despite his struggles with having an insane number of changes at OC, and his injury history, one thing no one can take away from Alex Smith is that he is one of the most intelligent persons to play in the NFL. If memory serves me, he had finished his Bachelor's Degree at Utah midway through his Sophomore season. And I think he was in Pre-Med! They explained that when time is short they will kick the regular game ball. When they switch out footballs the clock keeps running, so when time is short they just keep the regular ball. By Smith taking it off the field with him it forced the refs to wait for the K ball, but it was not immediately obvious it was at the fault of the offense.
