Mike’s harmony brought a whole level of musicality to the group’s sound, that elevated them above most other heavy-ish rock groups. Kicking MA out of the group was very poor form. But I get that Eddie wanted Wolfie in the band and on the road with him to help keep him (Eddie) out of trouble and walking a straight line.

Let's face it, he doesn't like Mike or Sam, so part of this is 'enemy of my enemy.' I can understand how he feels about the original band with Dave, they're legendary for good reason. But I also think he's butt hurt his reunion didn't get off the ground, while Mike and Sam went out and drew crowds, using the same guitarist he was going to use. That he was going to have Jason Newsted instead of Mike confirms the bad blood. I mean really, wtf? Why, when Mike is still living and can do those high harmonies?

I never understood it either. I always liked the sound of his background vocals which one of the many things that gave Van Halen of the 70's, 80's and 90's a unique sound and I couldn't believe they fired him without even talking to him. He had to find out the same way everyone else did from the news. Excellent bass player that gets a lot of respect. I couldn't believe that Eddie treated him like he wasn't very good and would often record himself playing bass on the later VH albums rather than Mikey and then got this great guy to sign away any of his rights to the music. You're so right that they always shit on him.

I have heard so many versions of the break up of the original Van Halen - probably the truth is somewhere in the middle. I heard Dave really wanted to be a movie star, but the EVH and AVH wanted to keep working and keep the momentum going - Dave wanted time off to pursue acting, but the train had to keep rolling. I know Dave had HUGE ego (still does) in the 80s, and I've heard that his people were telling him he WAS Van Halen - that he didn't need them anymore. I've heard Dave didn't like the musical direction with songs like 'Jump' - to pop oriented for him. Now Alex is saying it's jealousy. This issue with all great bands is with huge fame and money in the mix, you have a recipe for out of control egos - on all sides. But my biggest issue with Dave, Alex, and Eddie, was their outright dismissal and omission of Michael Anthony's contribution. Maybe he didn't contribute to the song writing, but he played a mean bass and his backup vocals blew Dave's singing out of the water - so perhaps they could say at least one or two things about his contribution. I won't be reading Alex's book precisely because he say's there were only 3 people who made the band what it was - it's simply not true.

That is just one side of the story, and I'm not fully convinced. Why would Dave want all the spotlight when after he leaves, he gets on of the best guitar players on the planet, Steve Vai, as his lead guitarist? Also, one of the best drummers as well. Dave had them both put on over the top performances when they played live. That doesn't strike me as someone's who wants to hog the spotlight. This feud just feels so childish to me.

I think you're missing the point of your own argument. When Dave put together that group with Steve Vai and others he did so because he wanted to show Van Halen up. I don't believe that - DLR always seemed like he really enjoyed Eddie's solos during live performances and I also heard that he didn't like that Eddie was putting prominent keyboards instead of guitar on certain songs (such as Jump and I'll Wait).

We do know what went sideways, for us fans in the 80's. DLR did want to be a big movie star. He wanted to make that leap. That is his thing, a showman. Him and his fake Carol Channing stage smile. A band is one thing, but performing in movies like Prince did? That must have been on his brain. He left to make that movie, but the movie company went belly up, and he was screwed. But that would be the ultimate for him. He loves the camera. MTV was the best thing that could have happened for him. He just needed that next step. All Dave all the time big as life.

Its sad and pathetic these guys couldn't put aside their egos long enough to honor EVH. These arguments sound like petty middle school nonsense. And I'm sorry to say this about Alex, but it didn't seem like he and Eddy were the easiest guys to work with. I'm sure DLR was pretty egocentric too. But Sam seems pretty nice and they couldn't stand him either.

💥HOLD ON!!! Now we clearly know EVH & company 👇🏼painted a false picture of how they parted & WE KNOW Dave didn’t say a BAD word about it or defend himself for a long time👇🏼 That should speak for itself! Every fan that’s ever met Dave has only said GREAT things of their encounter‼️ FACTS! Now also we know the truth why he left /cause EVH refused to do the soundtrack for Dave’s Movie! That’s pretty much an understandable impass, likely hurt Dave’s feelings & so Dave moved on! So far I can’t believe the context of wich Alex or Ed rip have placed Dave’s words in!!! Dave mite have an ego but its easy to smear him into the monster that they have since DAY 1 of the split! & I believe this is just more of the same because everyone bought it at first back then too! However since then turned out to be false! FACTS‼️👈🏼 time will tell the truth once again! Words & behaviors taken out of context can easily skew one’s view‼️

I'm glad that Alex released the book and the Unfinished song, but the best parts of Van Halen are in the past (the DLR era) and that's all I focus on. I do my best to ignore all of this modern day drama and hoping for some sort of a show. DLR-era albums, merch and thoughts of the whole band (including Michael Anthony) in Pasadena is what I cherish and still think about.

Things went sideways because of success. There haven’t been many bands that handled it well. When I watched the documentary on Pink Floyd they talked about Dark Side Of The Moon and how they finally made it. The question the band had was ; now what? After success comes the task of trying to top it or move forward creatively. Neil Peart summed it up best. One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity.

I worked with David’s cousin and she said his Dad was the same way as him. They were both space cadets in her own words. They would show up to family functions and act this same way. Her last name was the same as his and she said him and his dad wasn’t real liked in their family….he was a dentist that was well off so David came from money and the rest of them didn’t.

There's another story about when the 1984 tour ended they took a break. After some time off Dave called Eddie and wanted to meet at 5150 to talk about the next album. Dave shows up with a boom box with a cassette and he plays a track he had been working on and it was a cover of California Girls by The Beach Boys. Eddie was 100% against Van Halen doing anymore covers, but it was a big deal to Dave to cover it. They agreed to disagree and Dave quit the band and did his solo EP.

Eddie (RIP), Alex and Dave were always kings of exaggeration and pointing fingers. They were all very young, stressed out from being number one, touring, fame etc and using cocaine big time. They should leave the past alone. They all seem to not know what happened really. We'll never get a straight story. A conversation starts with "we should do a tribute" and the answer was "don't talk to me like that mf, I'm from the street?" Definitely sounds like a lot from the conversation was left out. Alex is quiet, but not innocent in all this. Love him though. One of the best drummers ever. I'm happy to have grown up with this band. They really taught me what having fun and chasing dreams was all about.

The dynamics in this band is crazy . Michael Anthony still gets under appreciated . Van Hagar broke up partly because Eddie and Alex wanted to record and tour . Sammy wanted a break. After Sammy left VH did nothing for a long time. Sammy put out like 5 albums before they did anything . That break up cost them a lot of time and money. Getting back with Dave was a last resort. They couldn’t stand him. Then they just act like his horrible vocals were normal . They could hold a grudge better than anyone . But it didn’t hurt anyone but themselves . It was inevitable that they would want to revisit the music from Dave’s era though . It was classic and just too good.

Oooooh I misunderstood the first video you put out on this subject. I originally thought that it was Alex Van Halen that said to David Lee Roth "I'm from the street mother f*cker. You talk to me like that I'll beat your ass!". So David said that to Alex? Because Alex wanted to included a short part of the show to his Brother who was the main part of the band? That is kinda crazy. David Lee Roth needs to understand and you would think he does understand that it was the 2 of them together that created that magic on stage and in the studio. Not just one or the other. People went to see them live to witness the greatest rock guitarist along side the best rock vocalist they've ever heard. Why be all weird about that? Consider yourself extremely lucky you got to live that life. But who knows maybe Roth has reasons that nobody else knows about yet. I dunno.

I've noticed one thing of this book Michael Anthony is so disrespected and seemed so unimportant. David Lee Roth is a complete a****** an idiot but yet Alex seems to think he was very important and even though he's a prima donna and complainer he would rather deal with him than the great Sammy Hagar. David Lee Roth was a great front man no doubt but his singing abilities where average at best Sammy Hagar what's more talented.

It is clear that Alex is pissed off at Sammy. I saw a video after Dave left the band and Alex and Eddie were rejoicing that everything was great. They were selling just as many albums or more and still selling out to huge concerts. It was definitely a different flavor as Dave was more of hard rock while Sammy was more Journey/ Foreigner. Dave said on a TV show exactly why he left the band, Eddie got married.
