Chris Choir, I'd say it worked pretty well, considering the worse recession since the great depression was reversed and we had continued economic growth starting from 2010 and the unemployment went from double digits all the way to 4%. You know, all the things Trump is trying to take credit for that started way before he even took office (funny how during Obama's time all those stats measuring how much the economy was improving were fake, and yet now apparently they're real). Not to mention the major social changes that occurred during that time, from Gay Marriage being allowed to America finally accepting socialized Medicare that went from being the most hated thing in the country to being so popular that even with republicans controlling all three branches of government they can't repeal it for fear of voters turning on them.

Apparently, neither do you. Guests are given accommodations (car service, flights, hotels, etc.) and a nominal stipend (as per Screen Actors Guild rules, can't even say with certainty for non-SAG guests like Ocasio-Cortez). I'd imagine the real value is the publicity. And if what Jerry Seinfeld mentioned in passing from a recent interview is accurate, then it's only around $500.

She seems pretty wise to me. She got out there and met the voters. She can defend her positions, agree with her or not (and I don't agree with all her positions at ALL). She won because Crowley dismissed her, being so confident he would win he didn't even show for debates. The voters were looking for fresh perspectives and someone who showed up and listened to them.

From the Interweb: "While communism and socialism share many principles (in fact, some would say communism is an extreme form of socialism), the primary difference between the two is that communism is both an economic and political system, while socialism is only an economic system, and as such can exist within a number of political systems or even within parts of a larger economic system, such as capitalism. Other notable differences exist around the concepts of personal ownership (socialism maintains the concept of personal property ownership, while communism removes it) and personal choice (socialism maintains personal choice in areas like education and religion, while communism removes it)." I think this means that the equation "socialism = communism" doesn't quite work.

@morganmarks52864 жыл бұрын
@C C Philip DeFranco has released a video that covers Defunding/Abolishing police and what it means. I believe that you should educate yourself on what you're arguing for, before you jump to conclusions. What I'm about to go into is covered in the video, some parts of what I say even word for word, but please do your own research on this, because this is an issue that needs to be talked about. Nobody is proposing for anybody to be in danger- this all started because black Americans are constantly in danger of losing their lives because of police. At least hear what the other side has to argue before becoming a bigot. Defunding and abolishing the police is not what you think it is. Nobody is saying to completely remove money or police immediately- or ever. People still need to be safe, but right now, police are not living up to that standard. These ideas of defunding/abolishing begin with dismantling the idea that police are public stewards meant to protect communities. Because right now, many black Americans do not feel as though the police are protecting them. Defunding the police means that funds that would normally go to the police would be distributed among the communities- specifically marginalized communities that the police would normally serve in. Basically, the higher standard on the community is maintained, the lower existing crime rate will be. If you didn't already know, in most cities the police budget is the highest, so really, these cities would not be devastating the police force. Yes, they won't have the same number of resources available to them, but you know what will? Mental health services, housing, hospitals, schools, food. That is where the money will be disbursed. Which will increase safety of the community. When you invest in communities- they become safer, meaning that the need for the police is lessened. By defunding the police, they limit the ability for police to harm communities- specifically black communities. So what about what you mentioned before? The home invaders? The rapists? they won't just go away just because the community is nicer. You're right, but the thing is, right now police are over relied on, from homelessness to domestic abuse. We turn to the police when, really, years of experience and common sense tell us that we can handle these things ourselves. By shrinking their funding, we shrink police responsibilities- so they will only respond to actual emergencies- like a home invasion. By defunding the police, the money can go into areas where it really matters, such as social and mental health providers, expanding community mediation and violence disruption programs and providing more training for those individuals to help descalate situations. It's also important to note that defunding the police has been used before! In Eugene, Oregon, they use a program called CAHOOTS- a nonprofit crisis intervention program, that had responded to over 25,000 calls of service last year- about 20% of the area's 911 calls with a budget of just 2 million dollars. If CAHOOTS can do that, with just 2 million in funding, why can't the police? So what does abolishing the police mean? Well, first off, it's not something that is going to happen over night. It isn't about snapping your fingers and instantly defunding every department in the world. Rather, they are talking about a gradual process of strategically reallocating resources and responsibilities away from police and towards more community based models of safety, support, and prevention. The people that respond to crises in a community, should be those who are best equipped to deal with these crises. Not strangers armed with guns- who very likely do not live in the neighborhood they are patrolling. Like defunding, funds will go to mental health service providers, social workers, victim/survivor advocates, religious leaders, neighbors and friends- all the people who really make up the fabric of a community- who look out for each other. Both of these ideas include moving funding to the community and shrinking the duties of the police, while giving them to others who will be better suited for dealing with certain situations. The biggest difference is that defunding is more of a spectrum. So please, next time you claim something terrible is going to happen because of a worst case scenario that nobody wants or is even suggesting: learn about what you're arguing against.

Karen Johnston We disagree with how she's going to do it. She'll force the top who worked their way up to pay for the lower bottoms which, frankly, do not deserve. Healthcare, education, those things aren't necessities for people to live, like electricity or water, people have to work to get their hands on those things. Medicines aren't like water, where you can get by building a rain catch, they're also not electricity which can be generated through a cycling machine modified. They're products, created by hard working people, costs a lot of time and money by those people, not by the public. Can't make enough money, America doesn't provide things for people who are not willing to earn it. Just go to those places where people " can not lived", you'll see that there's a reason for that, the people CNN chose to make interviews of, they're the minorities of those community. Use your brain.

Socialism and parties espousing such philosophies are failing all over the world. Just look at the last month throughout the world. I asked a number of students why they were supporting Bernie in 2016. They said he looked more like their grandfather. I said, "tell me about his socialist philosophy." They said, "We don't know anything about that." That appears where your head is. Socialism is on the decline all over the world and should be.

Obama never meant it (the hope and change thing) that is the only difference. He sold out day one in the White House. You think of the greats like Roosevelt and LBJ -- they knew how to rally the public, how to fight for what was right & what the country needed and for what the people had elected them for, how to shape the national dialogue. Obama was Mr. Get Along, Go Along with Wall Street and the Republicans -- he made pretty speeches and then retreated. An inconsequential president accept for the fact that he paved the way for Donald Trump. The Democrats have to go back to their roots and begin to fight again for Main Street. Alexandria is of that ilk.

As others have said, Obama never meant it or at the least stood up for it. That's why I like Sanders because he's preached the same thing in Congress for DECADES and at this point in his life he can't really be bought. Also, Obama didn't actually preach much of a progressive message. He tried too much to play even when the current Republicans have shown that hardball is the only option. Honestly if the Dems took back over all 3 branches they need to grow some balls and abolish the Electoral College and add 4 Supreme Court justices to make it 13 total. Otherwise we're fucked the rest of our lives and only the next generation will see the progress that our generation should have.

Having lived all my life in a country with socialist democracy, I find it mystifying how much resistance there is in the USA to these sorts of ideas. I get the argument about wanting to limit the size of the public sector, but is the current situation really good enough that it needs to be preserved? It’s not like a cutthroat capitalist system guarantees that there would be any less corruption or general cronyism.
@Bustaperizm6 жыл бұрын
The mentality of the people in some of those countries are drastically different from America. I honestly believe the ideals and values here don't align with it. You are to NOT WANT to be on welfare. You are to NOT take advantage of pensions, disability, and assistance programs. Our actions on the individual level do not match up. Also you would need to adopt a Nationalistic government view to keep these things intact to not be a drain. Her views of no ICE plus these programs dont add up. It lowers quality life across the board to be even and fair. Rather than elevating everyone. To add. Many of the countries that are pointed to as socialist idealistic havens, habe next to no military. Lets not be fooled into thinking they don't rely on other countries to shoulder that burden. Peace is being kept through threat of violence. Don't think its because we've all evolved into enlightened beings of commerce.

is the military not the most bloated public sector to ever exist in america? you're spending 600+ billion a year on a military that is invading and starting proxy wars with half the countries in the world and you call that maintaining the peace? Where to conservatives get off saying theres no money for universal healthcare but then drop 10 billion on a fucking fighter jet to bomb Syria... the hypocrisy is too much
@Bustaperizm6 жыл бұрын
Rowan Hypocrisy? What do you think America's chief export is? Weapons and military might. THATS what pays for our life style. Land of the free everyone wants to come to? The countries these socialist havens rely on is us. So yes. Our military budget is bloated. But its only hypocrisy if you lie to yourself about what is going on. We are the fire nation. If not us it'd be someone else. Next in line is russia and china. Edit: ironically they're pro socialists too. Maybe we should give them a go at driving? Hyper nationalist china and russia. Lets go.

Based on polls, most Americans want to end senseless wars and have more democratic socialist policies. But we're in an oligarchy, so what the majority actually want never gets done. lushin burl I’m sorry, I don’t know those words. However, I do know the words Marxism, Neo-Nazism, and Stalinism, and none you those started with Socialism. Honestly, half the things that she proposes aren’t even socialism. Universal healthcare exists in so many other countries, as does a welfare state to help the homeless. America is a country filled with debates that other countries don’t even think about. And yes, of course, wage disparity can act as an incentive to trained for more skilled jobs. However, without access to college, how the hell are people supposed to do that? You literally undermined your own point.
