I am 69 and have a brain tumor and heart issues, I live alone and never married or had kids and really no family.......some of my closest friends have already died, so I appreciate every day of life and as a Christian I realize how short life is and what a GIFT it is..........................even when I take my morning walks that usually last about one hour thru the neighborhood and a park with woods and a stream, I look at trees and the sky and clouds and wonder if I will ever see them again......I look at the falling red and yellow Maple leaves laying on the ground which just fell off the tree and some even land on my shoulder as I walk under the trees......I know where I am in my walk and one bridge over the stream is a half way point in my walk.............another street corner is the two-thirds point in the walk..................the closer I get to my home in the walk I stop and realize that in reality this is the time clock of my entire life and I am somewhere near the last 10 minutes of a 60 minute walk. ...............without the sorrow of knowing it will all end, it is impossible to fully appreciate each moment......................

we should change the name of homeless to independent. ppl using van/RV, to be free of debt, save $ etc..do have a home and just a more independent life.....Its a new change from excess use of space and resources.... just a thought here.....We all need to get creative and keep our fellow ppl off the streets and in a safe clean place...Love all these ppl with great advice.

I've lost my dearest cousin to alcohol recently and one thing I would hear her say while she was beyond drunk...she would say brother we need to travel maybe go fishing or something where I can put my feet in the water. I spoke to her about 7 hours before she passed away. We planned to go fishing the day she passed away...I didnt hear from her and I guess she was beyond intoxicated to where she ended up in the hospital. A few hours later she would pass, and at the time of her passing I was away fishing. I had the best day fishing just thinking about her and what I was going to do to help her enjoy a day of fishing when we got the chance! When I got home maybe 15 min before midnight I got the call at 12:02 am telling me she passed away! RIP Ashley Marie Yazzie 6/3/17 LIVE People

I can totally relate. I don't drive big trucks anymore, but I used to and even though it's been about 10 years, I still remember going through this exact thing every time I left home. I never knew when I was coming back, as I worked from point to point, wherever freight was available. I came home when I could get something heading back to El Paso. Sometimes I would go up and down the Midwest for weeks, then from one coast to another, yet still not be able to get something going home. I didn't own the truck, so it wasn't up to me to take it home with no paid load to justify the fuel expenditure. You only get about 7 mpg in those trucks, and 300 gallons at 3 or 4 bucks a gallon is too expensive unless you're getting paid to haul something to that destination. So I would often go 6 to 8 weeks before coming home, only to stay for a couple days, then leave again. My grandmother was getting old and I was afraid she would pass away while I was gone and I'd never see her again. The girl I was crazy about found herself another guy, seeing as how I wasn't around enough to be a proper part of her life. Yes, I did love the scenery and the beautiful solitude that comes with the territory, but it was always terribly hard to leave, not knowing when I would return. Then there were all these close calls on the road. For all I knew, maybe it would be the last time I ever went home. That shit would drive me crazy sometimes. So yeah, I know how you feel. I just revisited that familiar feeling as I watched you talk about it. Be safe out there, Ahle. You're an amazing young woman and such a beautiful soul!

I found your comment and this vlog very moving. Both have helped me reflect on just how important my bonds are with other people as opposed to any of my personal ambitions. I don't want to put words in yours or Ahles mouth but if I were a trucker or van lifer I'd probably at least sometimes get really lonely (not that I don't to a lesser degree) and that's just an awful feeling.

@LoveofVelvet No, it didn't work out. It was for the best, though. The way things were in her life at the time, she would've been a handful and that wouldn't have been good for me. She was really wrecking her life and that guy was a big part of it. They both got arrested a number of times before she worked up the guts to leave him and I just don't need that kind of drama in my life.

@@dlotable I actually love solitude, but I also like knowing when I'm coming back. As long as I have the power to come and go when I want to, I can stay away for weeks or months. It's when someone else is holding the cards that it bothers me. My grandmother was getting really old and she would always ask when I was coming back. I couldn't answer her, because I didn't actually know and wouldn't know until I got a load going through my town. I felt really bad about that and it's not the easiest job to quit. I mean, you can quit, but you pretty much have to cut and run, hoping you have enough money to hold you until you get something else. Since you're never home, you can't really make it to interviews, drug tests, etc, or even tell a potential new employer when you'll be available. You'll lose a number of opportunities until you decide to just walk away and take your chances. That's what I ended up doing. Otherwise, I'd still be stuck out there.

If you’re feeling that it’s time to not be a “Hobo” anymore, then go with that. It’s about the journey, not the destination. There is no wrong decision. The world is yours, best wishes.

Trust me . . . the feelings you have are completely normal. Loneliness is a natural part of life. Whether you live in a traditional lifestyle or not, loneliness exists in all of us. Some more than others, but nonetheless it's there. It isn't resolved by lifestyle, or crowds, or social media, or religion . . . it's tamed only when you meet someone you click with and have a relationship that never dies regardless the circumstances. In some ways you're lucky; you're lucky because you have relationships that are forever. Enjoy it! Cherish it! Build on it!

Zach Zach I could see how you feel about wanderlust given the examples from people in your life. I think you can have both, wanderlust and “mastering” your situation, it all depends on one’s actions. For me, I feel I have wanderlust, I want to explore and learn new things; but I also have obligations, like taking care of my 64 yo disabled mom (disabled from a massive stroke 6 years ago). Now that I have an adventure van, I plan to take her places with me explore the states and Canada. My mom and I could have wanderlust together :)

I’ve lived in a vehicle before and I know the feelings that you go through. It was hard times, but I found out that doing without security and comfort doesn’t leave you lacking. It gives you strength and teaches you to value the little that you have. I find that I don’t let petty circumstances break me down. How could I? If I can endure such hardships, why would I let small bumps in the road get me down. You’re going to come through your “travels” with belief in yourself. Let the entire thin veneer of society break down, you can rely on yourself and your faith. You have a beautiful heart, defend it and yourself. Story of my life... I lived in 4 countries, visited more than 30 and have good friends all over the planet. It saddens me that I rarely get to see some of them face-to-face. But then it is magical when we do get together. And even more painful when we say our goodbyes not knowing if that was our last time. In actual fact you never know when there is a last time for anything. I'm getting to an age where a few of these last times have happened already (even more scary is that I may not even be aware that they did). You only live once this life, make it count in the way that makes sense to you.

✨I lived out of my van in West Virginia for 3 months and the humidity was awful. I was attacked by mosquitoes every day. Ticks crawled on me all the time. The rain came almost daily and began to ruin the wood paneling that the previous owner installed. It leaked water on the bed when it rained hard. Mold began to grow and all my clothes stayed damp. It was super hot during the day in summer. It was hard to stay clean and sober minded and to eat healthy. I am so glad I left that all behind. I wish everyone else wanting to do this the best of luck but it isn’t easy and it becomes super expensive if you don’t have a permanent place to park your van / vehicle 🚗 also it was super lonely 😞

As a trucker, I've also come to a similar realization. Primarily, I know I have a fair amount of wanderlust and like being a nomad. On the flip side, I also don't have close friends or family, which feeds this strange spiral where I don't shut down frequently, but when I do, I'm quick to meet new people. However, that realization made me understand that these random strangers are fun to hang with, but I'll likely never see them again.

to me, holidays are just pre-ordained dates on a calendar chosen by others, when everyone expected to go to certain places to see certain people to eat certain foods and do certain things and spend certain money. many, many people dread the holidays because of this, and many are miserable the whole time they are 'forced' to participate, and yet others are miserable that they are not there on that particular date and time. but yet we are expected to love our people on a set schedule or else be considered misfits. as a traveler too, i'm already a misfit, which is the way i like it, but most importantly, my 'holidays' are set by me and the people i love, time spent genuinely, enjoyed without expectation or obligation, but with much joy. this comment offered respectfully, as an alternative viewpoint.

Sure many families do not like each other enough. but if they do, and it is "Gosh I wish we could meet _sometime_ " - then holidays are the chance to meet. Also the chances to get time off are better, kids do not have school, etc. The presents are another thing: in family we agreed that adults do not give things to each other, some bring some homemade stuff (cookies in cellophane). The grandparents get their chance to spoil the grandkids, but the parents of smaller children limit what they get (they have more than enough already). And the teenagers will always be glad to get some extra allowance from grandparents and uncle and aunts (if they are so inclined).

I gave it up to be home, and while some things in my life have improved, others have declined. I miss the freedom. I feel trapped in a cage of my own making. I get a similar feeling and I'm living a fixed location lifestyle. Most people I've known moved on in life to new locations, they took on large responsibilities (or interests) that eat their time, and end up sacrificing active friendships along the way. I don't think there is a cure for the heartbreak of the infrequent (planned or random) encounters and it only gets worse when people you dearly love start to die off and the opportunity to spend time together has expired. It's those times that I reflect on the time I've wasted in life. Whatever excuse I had for not spending more time with them suddenly feels shallow no matter the reasoning.

If he could choose, he’d be traveling the world on his bike full time (he did that from college to early 30s). Unfortunately Now he has a really good job that keeps him land bound. Sounds like it can get lonely, but I look at it as building up friends for retirement. Be true to yourself and travel as much and as long as you can. Just keep the family connection the strongest, they’re the most important piece! People live busy lives and I can see even good friends living in the same area once a year/once every few years. Just let it flow: see people when you can, and branch out to some more folks that DON’T live the van life so you have some good local area friends/host families to visit when you’re in town. Especially if you have your own pattern/route. They can share a little home life and stability with you, and you can share some wanderlust and tips with them. Maybe they’ll even hit the road or a flight to get out of their comfort zone and meet you somewhere!

I totally feel where you're coming from. I grew up in Hawaii, & moved to Cali 10 yrs ago. Whenever I meet up with my parents or friends I'm always super excited, but sad at the same time, since I know our time together is limited. It's weird...the leading up to seeing them is almost better since I have that to look forward to. Of course when the time comes to Meetup it's totally awesome, but also real heartbreaking once we say goodbye. It's comforting knowing I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I'm glad for you that you're able to travel and do what you love. In order to live your lifestyle, I know you've made several sacrifices...including not being in relationships and not being able to see the people you want to see for x amount of time. I've been watching you for a while now and I know the videos you make are only a very short time of your day...but I am curious, how often to you see people/friends? Do you talk on the phone with anyone often or do you stay isolated more than not? I know you spend a lot of time alone and that's part of being able to do what you want to do, but just make sure you socialize too. Too much time alone can make you sad. It's completely normal to be emotional when you have to leave a friend or family member..because you value your time together. No different than seeing a loved one who lives far away and you only see them on holidays...or even going on vacation and having to leave the place you went to. You value your time there and don't want to leave but have to..yet enjoyed the time spent there. ETC. Like you said, everything comes with pros and cons...just be sure there's more pros than cons in whatever you do. Yes, it's sad leaving friends/family but you're able to do what you love..and you get to see the world....and not everyone is fortunate enough to be in that position. This is all over the place lol sorry...just wanted to let you know that it's ok to be sad or emotional. I'm glad you got to let it out on this video:) be safe and enjoy yourself♡

It's good to hear you have that perspective. I believe it's the same as living stationary. I think when we travel a lot, we meet more people and friends. I have friends who are stationary and they never see each other even if they are in the same city! Then they tell me they see me more often even though I come from far away. You are living in the moment. Many people never get to live life to the fullest like that. Then, they realize they've never seen their friends for 40 years. It IS very cool to meet so many people like you do. I think that's the best way to live. the best way to live a full and happy life.

I feel you. Even though I'm not mobile yet I travel a lot and I don't have much family or friends where I live. When I see them it's wonderful but when I leave it's heartbreaking because you don't know when you will see them again. What helps me is contacting them when I miss them checking up and trying to be apart of their lives even if we are thousands of miles apart. Hello Ahle I just started looking at your videos and I find myself wanting to see more and more because you are so loving kind and a beautiful person. I don’t have a daughter but if I had one I would definitely want her to be like you 😊. I may be wrong but I think you should maybe go back home and live there for a while. At least you will have your Mom and your friends and family. And you can still go on your road trips as vacations.I get the Impression that you are a bit lonely. Please think about it and know that this is just a suggestion.

We all have this need for connection, and that makes it hard to part when you've had a good time together and yet you have to part for awhile. The good thing is that it's usually very special when your time is short and it creates with bonds with certain people.

Your such a bright soul Ahle! I did van life for 5 years after the 2008 crash from 09 to 2014 and it definitely had its poignant moments but truth is most people let life pass them by while they’re making grand plans for it. Loneliness creeps in and acceptance can be an issue but in the end I realized that the juice really is worth the squeeze. I’m now in a house with a corporate job I hate and I spend my free time pondering why I fell back into being a slave to things. I completely understand your feelings and emotions and it’s hard to convey emotion sometimes. I miss focusing on the journey vs the destination. Keep doing you and things will fall into place. Great video! It’s been awhile since you’ve inspired me to go choose my own adventure, Thank you. I’ve been a year on the road and experienced this quit a bit as well. Caved in this past month and ended up in a year lease to regroup, school up and head back out for longer period. Go further. Your inspiration takes effect. While in motion there is always the next thing so every moment has its own lifetime. You have more opportunities to learn an appreciate life fully because more of it becomes available to you. Being complacent, stationary, seems to let it go by while you miss it. Be cool to meet you. I’m in Prescott, AZ if your cruizin through stop in we’ll go climbing. Ahle, this is the first of your videos I've watched, but I do plan to watch others. You spoke off the cuff and from your heart with an honesty that is quite refreshing. Goodbyes can be difficult, and as I tell people, I don't want to ever get good at saying them. I agree completely with you when you said to "live in the moment." Thank you for sharing your feelings about that subject. It is hard when you’re traveling, because you’re obviously going to meet some amazing people along the way! And it is sad, because you will have to say goodbye eventually. But we all have our own adventures that we are on and our own lives to live so it’s just a part of it, but the memories made with them are such a blessing to look back on. And when you do get to see them again it’s soooo good! Keep the people you love in your heart and they’ll never be far away, safe travels!

Hi Ahle! I just spent 14 days living in the back of my 2001 Toyota Tundra in the High Sierra's . I am 59 and have a wife of 34 years. I don't camp that much any more so it is an adjustment. Just the short time living in the back of truck does bring out a lot of emotions for me. I think of things like why am I living of my truck and dang its cold. The hardest part for me was climbing in and out of my sleeping bag two to three times a night to go pee. It would be tough to do that full time. I think I would need a van, a trailer or a motor home to live full time on the road. I do understand your loneliness in it all. You know just living life comfortably in a home can get you in a rut and you can become lonely as well. My life is a life of loneliness because I am a Christian and my thoughts are about Christ and His return. For the last 10 years I have been seeking the Truth in pretty much everything. Almost everyone I know even family are not as interested in the truth as I am so right there is a separation of priorities. Thanks for sharing your emotions with us. God Bless and God speed!

Hi Ahle! I just wanted to tell you that your videos are very motivating and have helped me transition from renting to making my car my home. This marks my 6 months on the road and have learned and experienced so much. I totally understand the whole coming and going of friends. The way I think of it is friends and family who come to visit. Youre excited for them to come visit but bittersweet that they have to leave. What i usually say is "I love you, take care, and I will see you later." Whether its 6 months to a year to 10 years; serendipity. Its never goodbye. Thank you for sharing your experiences and keep up with the inspiration!

I’m living in my Jeep Liberty right now. Sometimes our dreams are worth more than the material items we become attached to and think we own. Real freedom is freedom from all attachment including to our own body. Fear of death is really just fear of losing your body. We are spirits. We are souls that are separate from our bodies and the material world of illusions. Most get lost in the dream and forget the truth. The pursuit of freedom and love above all else is not a misguided vision even if it might sadden us because we left everyone we knew and went it alone. We are always connected to the universe and the universal intelligence. Everything is vibrating spinning energy made of the same “stuff”. We are all connected more than we know.

Well explained, I totally feel you since I am a solo traveler as well. I also think that my heart is being trained in being broken and then opening up for the next encounter again and again so it will become this super heart that is capable of bearing anything. At the same time I get more okay with feeling the sadness when leaving and therefore get even more emotional over the years. A very real topic for us solo van dwellers. Thanks for sharing.

What is great about your situation is that you get to choose when and if you want to end this lifestyle. You are not forced into this, so you have the flexibility of spending more time with loved ones and you determine when you want to go back on the road..... it is not decided for you by a job that you have to return too. If you do not have to live in a van, find some cheap place to live, obviously work if you have to, then travel on weekends. Two days of travel out of a weekend are plenty to enjoy, see new things, meet some people, shoot some videos. Obviously, you are not likely to keep large audience that way and a fairly sizeable extra income. Well, that's true but maybe you can adjust to that.

Lola Bint it also means nomadic or free spirited person. If she WAS Romani and I called her a gypsy that would be a slur. She isn’t. This was very interesting, Ahle. It's funny because one of the main reasons why I am planning to move into a car is because I currently DON'T see my friends and family (even if they live close by) because I am constantly working and never have the time or the money to see them. But if I live in my car, it's literally just a matter of driving to them, and I won't be working as much. Time and money won't be the giant obstacles that they once were and I honestly can't wait for that day to come. So for me it will definitely be an improvement in terms of developing relationships. But you've raised an interesting point there and I will probably experience that heartbreak as well. However, I would rather feel the heartbreak of leaving a good friend who I finally got to see than the soul-crushing regret of never seeing them at all just because I'm too busy paying bills.
