The televote is just as bad in many regards. Often they balance each other out so that the winner is deserving (with few exceptions), but the mid-to-low placing countries rarely get their due (some are way too high, others get no points at all when they're just as bland and insipid as some songs that placed 6th through 20th)

The problem the UK has is not that their song is always bottom of everyone’s list, it’s that it’s always 15-20th on *everyone’s* list. So it doesn’t score, because it needs to be in the top 10 of someone’s. The UK is often better than some of the songs that score better than it, but they get a handful of points from random countries that really like that unusual genre or whatever. The UK needs something braver: even if it alienates some, it will attract a few points as well.

I’m one of the Americans who watched 2016 live as it aired here for the first time. Honestly didn’t think it could get any better than that year, but every year since has just continually amazed me. The staging, the songs, the performances, the videography, everything just keeps getting better! I was totally Mike, though, during the scoring. I suddenly realized why my European friends would complain about the scoring after experiencing it live myself. Nice to see the experience can happen when watching it for the first time years later. Though I do think that over time as I’ve listened to the album more on repeat that certain songs I didn’t initially like I have found that I like them more today than then. I’m not saying I think the juries were right, I’m just saying that maybe I didn’t fully appreciate some songs early on that the juries seemed to like more than me at the time. Then again, I didn’t initially like Russia’s song that much but then the performance was just so interesting that I kinda hoped it would win just for that. Also definitely understand when Alex says things like “wrong artist right song” type of things as I’ve listened to other songs by many Eurovision artists and found some that I like their other songs way better than what they sang at Eurovision. “Don’t under estimate the power of teen girls” and “they probably used every phone in the house to vote” I think are the iconic lines for me in this video because it’s so true, though let’s be honest it’s really a combination of straight/bi/pan teen girls and gay/bi/pan teen boys doing that kind of thing! ;-)
@ganapatikamesh3 жыл бұрын
@@jamslam5641 Yep you’re correct. It was being broadcast by LOGO-TV in the US (only the Grand Final), but after 2018 they decided not to continue. I was only able to watch the 2019 Eurovision because Netflix in the US now has the rights to stream it (both semi-finals and the final), but it isn’t live. Which I’ll admit does make it feel kinda different since I already knew the winner before I could watch it. Last year a friend of mine told me to try the Swedish broadcaster’s website in order to watch the Eurovision special and I was able to watch it there. Otherwise most broadcasters and even the Eurovision KZbin channel geoblocks the US during live streamcasts (though sometimes they unblock some content afterwards). On the plus side I can watch the music videos, interviews, and lots of other recorded content on the channels. A friend that lives in California recommended getting a VPN as he uses it to watch many tv shows. He’s originally from Scotland and his roommate is from Japan so they use a VPN to access things on the internet from their home nations that would otherwise be geoblocked in the US.

And I actually don't mind about Ukraine winning, the song is good, and the performance is actually also very moving. But for me the songs on the top 3 are not a song that I would listen to regularly tho. My favourite from 2016 is France, love the song and still listening to it to this day. Btw I would looooove to see them react to the songs that did not qualify from this year or even years back, because there are some hidden gems in there and also there are some memorable act or song that is very interesting or good.

I can't believe how much I underrated that song in 2016, IMO after Zeljko Joksimovic, Made of stars is the best ballad of the decade. BTW I am from Poland and it was a crime :) Poland is never liked by juries (probably only San Marino is worse in history in average jury scoring), but great majority of times it is strongly justified.That year it was not. And if the Umbrella cover is at the bottom, you should know how strong that year was (also not qualifying f.e. Iceland, which I listen still very often, maybe even more often than Israel)

I don't get why so many people think Ukrain's win had a political motivation. There wasn't. Let's be honest: The quality of You are the only one was very low compared to his other songs. The staging behind Zelmerlöw's Heroes fit to the story he was telling. But what did Sergey want to say with his staging? It was just "We will blow your mind with something that has nothing to do with the song". From that point I can totally understand why the juries put Sergey on the 5th place. And 1944 wasn't even the favourite of them, cause Australia was on their first place.

Fun fact: Serbias contestant from 2016 and one of her background singers actually are members of the girl troup Hurricane and have competed at the ESC this year for Serbia again. And Frans song " I was sorry" was really popular after the ESC in whole Europe. It was in the top of the charts for a long time and still is getting played in the radio often until now🙈

I think they kinda need to know what happened in 1944 and the Soviet Union in general to understand the meaning of the song.

I explained it to them.. they just thought it was really dark in a real way for Eurovision...

Thanks for the video!!! Always like to see the reaction of first time viewers. Am sure there were times when Alex couldn’t contain himself. These videos are as entertaining as the contest itself. Love love the video and peace peace to you guys :-)
