You're quite a laid-back and considered personality which, in tandem, makes for engaging viewing. The photograph you've composed and edited blossoms as the video develops. My own preference is for the wide panorama which invites the eye to scan the landscape and finally come to rest on the dead tree before moving on yet again. Wonderful. Many thanks Alex.

Hi Alex, I just recently found your site and wanted to give you props on your techniques and method of relaying your knowledge to others. You have a great style - nice and laid back. There are too many others out there that seem more interested in selling themselves and their products. You don’t come across that way at all and, in fact, you are more interested in teaching others how to approach photography and the post processing of the photo. From what I’ve watched so far, you are spot-on with everything. GREAT techniques!! Keep up the good work - I know there are a lot of folks who are going to learn from you. BTW, I think the pano is the way to go on that “lone aspen”.

Don’t stop with the philosophy. Photography makes you become closer to nature. Great tips with the local adjustments I was always using exposure and bemoaning it. Hard choice with which photo to choose, so will agree with the one made by the artist. It is their creation. But would be very happy to have taken and edited any of the versions. Must get myself into experimenting more when editing, tend to go for just one look.

@@AlexArmitage I really like that because when you're starting out and wanting to elevate your quality I think its easy to be caught up in the myth that "if only you could find the right preset" then that's when your photography will become professional or better. Thanks for the video Alex. I prefer the pano with tree in the middle, but the other verions look great too.. I've been enjoying your videos since discovering your channel a few days ago. Your video on the Calibration panel in Lightroom had me subscribe to your channel. Very well explained and presented. Gone back to it a few times, I regard it as a reference. Good to see your full capture and processing flow, just the right length time wise. I'd suggest around 30 minutes is a good maximum length. Could I suggest that you cover the Detail panel sometime?
@AlexArmitage4 жыл бұрын
Yeah my goal was less than 30 minutes but also not to restrict myself either. I will say I could have cut down areas of the video of me in the field as they weren't relevant to the actual edit, but I also think philosophy and discussion on photography are healthy, and people can always skip around if they want too. Thanks for the love and support. I was just looking at doing a video on detail so Ill add it to my list!

Nice Alex. Both work. For competition, I’d use the tree on the left. Judges tend to follow rules, and only use creativity as a balance between two similar entries. (At club level anyway). Panos are great on walls, and you could split that up into 3 squares or 2x3 . 👍

Hey Alex, love your videos, including this one. I have a question that is more on the initial step (taking the pictures): Where was you focus point when you took the panos? Put differently, how did you manage to get all of the dead tree, the aspen forests and the mountains in the back sharp at the same time? Cheers!
@AlexArmitage4 жыл бұрын
Hey Cesar! This is a fantastic question. I set my focus on the tree but I was quite far away from it when taking the photos so shooting at f8.0 on my lens was enough to capture everything in focus. You can see how far away I was in the drone shot but it doesn't do it justice. If you ever want to check this in the field simply focus on your subject (the tree in this case) and then move your focus point to the background, in this case anything like the mountains or aspens and watch the focus ring on your lens. Not all lenses have a meter but mine has a little window where I can see how much it changes when I do this. In this case it probably changed very minimally meaning with a smaller aperture of f8 nearly everything should be in focus. There's probably a small amount of blur on the background but at such a large resolution because it's a pano it's unnoticeable.
@inkslinga14 жыл бұрын
My fav image would be the Pano, it's the way I try for each time I am out with my camera...Also i like your video: Taking the image then full process, I know it's going to be a lengthy video but I would happily watch 30/45 mins.....

Great video Alex! I preferred the tighter crop with the tree slightly off center. I feel like the background with the mountains is balanced better in that image, even though the tree isn't directly in the center of the frame. With the wider crop the background falls off on the left side and feels a little unbalanced to me. I love all of the images though!
@AlexArmitage4 жыл бұрын
This is one of the toughest issues! I too think the tighter crop balances the background mountain so much better. Not only that but it puts the dead tree and background in balance. However all of that said, I still think I prefer the tree in the middle BUT my mind isn't made up. I actually love this photo for that discussion. And reading the comments it's certainly not straight forward.

photography is a creative process, long one, as well as writing, or painting, or maybe even cooking :)) the idea is, during the process you make decisions, you sort out your thoughts about it, you evaluate each decision and you compare it to previously gained experience, you try to use techniques which you know which you like or which you only try to use to find out if it works, you find new ways how to express yourself, and most of all you find out how to CAPTURE yourself in that moment into what you are doing right now. Because thats why you like coming back to your work, right? To remember how you captured yourself at that moment. All this makes you better person, so yep, i agree photography makes you a better person.

I guess you don’t have this issue as you’re a young guy, but do you use focus peaking? Thanks again for the generosity of your educational content. @@philiptata3607 Hahah. Some hot tea sounds really lovely right now. I'll be completely honest and say I tend to just rely on autofocus the majority of the time. Secondly I usually only use the view finder when I'm scrambling around or theres bright sun. Why could that possibly matter? Does the painters brush brand matter? Does the writers pen or computer or Word processor matter? This video is about thoughtfully creating a mood in the image to elicit a emotional response in the viewer.

B&W with the dead aspen in the middle; secondly, the color version of the same. Nice editing flow...

Thanks Charles. If the comments are any indication I still don't know what to choose :P

Great tutorial. The only thing i would say is it was way to warm for my taste. You lost the separation between the trees and the ground. Also, the green trees sort of mixed with the yellow ones. Just a little WB adjustment and this would be perfect. Also, I would send this image through Luminar or Nic collection once. Just to add a bit of micro-contrast and to see what AI has in store for me. Thanks for sharing.

I certainly don't disagree. I need to revisit this photo. I think the warm tones are pushed because I felt that was what it looked like in person but maybe that's just not where it should go!

I think the BW version is more dramatic, I like it the most.

It's a tough choice. The comments have reinforced that.

I find adobe color profile to be less interesting than the camera profile, But you can obviously tweak it to a similar place
@AlexArmitage3 жыл бұрын
What camera profile are you referring to?
@NJRIII3 жыл бұрын
@@AlexArmitage the camera profiles. Standard, portrait, landscape. Camera matching
@AlexArmitage3 жыл бұрын
@@NJRIII Ah assume "the camera profile" is just "Standard" yeah?
@NJRIII3 жыл бұрын
@@AlexArmitage yeah, standard, from canon adds a nice depth to the darks, Fuji actually is calling their "camera modes", film simulation modes. Which was confusing at first. I did ignore these profiles for awhile but if I think of them like film types, it does make sense to play with first, before editing.
@AlexArmitage3 жыл бұрын
@@NJRIII I thought the Fuji film types only applied to their in camera jpg processing?

Maybe try watching the video at the same time you're editing and just rewind a bunch? Have you tried one on one instruction?

I'm pretty sure this video is very good. But I just couldn't take the nose ring.

Thanks for the compliment! I won't apologize for the nose ring though :)
