I don't think there was ever an elite armwrestler who also was an Olympic medalist. I wouldn't have been surprised if he knew Judo or Sambo as well. He was a complete athlete in every way.

Not only was the match decided by the referee, the ref also caused so much tension between the two athletes, almost causing a fight. If you let the two athletes pull without trying to micro manage, the stronger athlete is going to win. Both athletes will know where they stand & no one will feel frustrated. Terrible rules.
