Hi Alex. I do see a lot of negative comments on the expats group on Facebook which makes me concerned about moving there with my family. But yes, having said that, I agree with you when you say that the same situation is viewed differently by different people depending on their expectations from a city. I appreciate that you are honest with respect to how much money is needed for a family to have a decent/good life in Malta. You are doing a great job with your channel. I am looking forward to moving there ❤️❤️

Hi guys!! I d like to put some thoughs on this video and topic. First of all i live in Malta for about 2 years, having a salary way much bigger than the average. On the thing you mentioned about surveys and that they are not that reliable etc, i would say that surveys are much more reliable than anyones opionion, and thats because its made of tens of thousands of opinions. Second thing is that quality of life is not defined by the salary you get, but there are many factors that affect it. As you said , Luxembourg which is one of the wealthiest countries in europe is doing even worse in the survey. So i guess Malta is that low, and i agree, because of the absence of natural beauty, the massive constructions and buildings that have made this place a concrete jungle, with 150.000+ people living in the centre and way more visiting making the place the opposite of a rellaxed easy living paradise. Service in any matter is one of the worst in europe. Massive traffic, air polution and NOISE are more obvious than the Eiffel tower in Paris. Everything here is about money and i dont blame you mentioning it even if its not the only factor. For an under 25 of age expat, who wants to go eat in good restaurants, doing nightlife, going on boats and living this lifestyle ( which i dont critise but only mention) Malta is more than ok. If you re a person who loves nature, privacy, quiet and other things that gives quality in life, you might feel sad here. To conclude if you have a salary of 2k + , you would be safe in terms of cost of living in any country. The difference is that in some countries you could also enjoy other things. I dont judge people praising Malta, i just dont see it this way

Or else should quit the country “cause it makes bad publicity” ? I think each person (being a tourist, an expat or whatever) is free to give a personal opinion. Hi, Alex--I too was shocked when I read that survey a few days ago, sending it to my sister who moved to Mexico on the Caribbean side after she retired since Mexico is ranked 1st. She has complained to me about power outages or water outages and the like there periodically--although the price of groceries, restaurants, and rentals is much lower in Mexico than in Malta. But Malta has such a great bus system, in my view, and the wifi I had while living there for half a year was wicked fast, and there is so much to do and see as your videos show! There's such history and culture for such a small country. Yeah, it's not perfect, but I could readily see a person living and working there or retiring there. Of course I'm used to San Francisco Bay Area prices, but while there I could go to one place (a bakery/restaurant) in St. Julian's a 5-minute walk away and get a cappuccino for 5,50 euros and walk in the opposite direction to a local cafe and get the same size (and just as tasty) cappuccino for 1,50 euros. The atmosphere in the more expensive place was more upscale, and I ate there more often for lunch or dinner, but if I wanted just a traditional European breakfast of a coffee and croissant, I went to the local cafe. It was also more authentically Maltese. I rented a two-bedroom, two bath, in St. Julian's (with a slight view of Spinola Bay) for I think 1500 euros a month out of high season, and then I think the two-bedroom, one bath, in Floriana was closer to 1900 euros in high season. I mention those prices since you asked for the price of rentals. But in the Floriana area I could get bread (hobz) freshly made much cheaper than supermarket prices as well as fresh fruits and vegetables from the local carts that came in daily.

if you wish to have your own apartment add additional €300? Sorry to say, but this is soo far from being true. The flat on its own , even in the remote areas of the island, costs around €1000 a month, and thats not including any bills ( which in Malta are pretty high). So as a person who lives on the island for 6 years now, I can definitely say, you need to earn at least €2000 in order to feel comfortable in Malta. And when I say it, I dont mean going to the restaurants on the daily basis and have after work drinks with you colleagues every day. This amount will cover you a rented flat, groceries, a couple of dining outs and some money to save. Thats it. When talking about digital nomads, its very important to consider what the place has to offer for a person who is not spending 8 hours in the office. Having a monthly income of €5k , he would expect to get more in terms of quality of life and entertaiment, sadly Malta doesnt really have a variety in this sense. Opening new restaurants on the weekly basis, where prices are sometimes higher than in London and Paris, is not a huge add on to this. Personally I think that Malta is a good place to spend your 20ties, having a relaxed lifestyle and enjoying yourself, but when it comes to more "serious" life, banking, medicine, traffic and prices (growing on a monthly basis) in Malta are not the best at all, sadly.

Hi Jelena, the add of €300 is already on the €400 for a room, and even nowadays with the inflation, you can still find apartments for €700 (ofcours studio or one bedroom). The rest u wont comment as it is all subjective, one can be happy and manage to live with 1200e a month and some cannot survive even with 2500e

As someone who grew up in Malta now a digital nomad I really don't like Malta and when people ask me why, I have a simple list of things: 1: overpriced, 2: not built for pedestrians, 3: apartments are freezing in the winter, 4: public transport is pretty useless, 5: its an island for party people and for pensioners. The contrast of quality of life is amazing when I left to Ukraine and later Bulgaria. But I can only speak for myself. At the end of the day Malta is cool in some areas, and will hopefully only improve in the future.

Hello Alex! I moved here a month ago with my family and we love what we found so far. I think it depends on what are your expectations and the way you live. the Island has everything for everybody, if you want to have a quiet life you can live on the country side and listen only the sound of the birds. Or if you want to party there's plenty of that on Sliema, Paceville and all the fest in the summer. The good thing is that as the island is small you can go from one place to another and everything just by riding a car a few minutes.

As you've seen in my other comments - I LOVED Malta when I visited. Amazing views, very easy to navigate around (being very English -centric) and the weather was perfect 👍 the only thing I really noticed that might be considered a "negative" was inside notice alot of disparity in various areas of the island. For example you can drive 5 minutes one direction and it was like a coastal paradise then further up the road it seemed very low quality of living/rubbish all over the streets etc. The UK has similar issues but being a small island, probably magnifies the issue on Malta.

(for me this is slavery) Landlords... the worst nightmare, deposit forguet, and they will try to overcharge you on the utilities and even with agencies... some thing they will redact a contract that goes only on the interest of the landlord. Maltese persons are not frendly for expats, the UE are the gold chicken eggs, the no UE are garbage to serve them. I see video of Alex, that are very well done, but I dont believe that they reflect the reality of Malta and if you search for the rotten of malta you will find My advise if you are coming to Malta is research very deeply how they work and function to avoid problems and stress with the things from this island Malta totally deserve so low at this ranking

Thanks for the video. I think some people (not talking about you at all but more about some comments) can’t take any negative comments about their own country. You said you disagree with some parts of the survey but still you respect it. People who insult and don’t respect others opinions, even if a lot of people agree, have a problem. It is you right to like your country but what’s the matter if some don’t ? They are free to think so and to say so. Maybe my standards of living are to high and some will disagree but that is my point of view. I think Malta is far away from missing people (eg locals tourists expats), don’t worry your life won’t change because of some critics. Personally, I love Malta as a holiday place. Many beautiful things to see, nice weather, good food, parties, beaches,… I don’t think it is so great to live there cause rents are really to high (for not such nice places) especially compared to salaries (not even to mention minimum salary which is a joke…). But of course, if you have or make a lot of money you can live very well there (as almost everywhere else).

What are the costs of private education, is the public education in English or only Maltese? What are the best areas (meaning -quiet :D) for families with small children to be living. How about entertainment for children, afterschool classes such as dancing, sports, children's clubs etc. Infrastructure? Can one freely move around the island with a stroller? etc. Perhaps families are not your target market, but it would be interesting to learn. Thanks a lot for all the insightful videos!

People who move to Spain have more bureaucracy to go through, and it is easier here for Brit.s because of the language. The standard of living is not as good as it should be because many landlords do not keep their properties up to a good standard, and people sell houses that need massive amounts of work done. And you can't find reliable builders/workers!

Besides me liking or not the island, I think the cost of living is completely disproportionate to the salaries offered. I would say, for living very basic you need around 1200€, then for entertainment you need around extra 500€ and last, if you're an adult, you know you need to save/invest money and for that you need at least 300€ a month. So for me, you need around 2000€ net/month to have a normal life. I've lived in 4 other countries and with 2K you have a better quality of life, that's just the reality. Regarding the survey, the only thing I disagree is the safety, I do consider Malta is a pretty safe place to live, except for women (specifically sexual harassment I had a couple of bad experiences), but in terms of robberies is safe.

Hi Alex, as you've said: those surveys are not enough transparent to teach you anything. And surveys are opinions, have those 12000 people participating been in Malta for real? We don't know. There lots of people who read articles online, focus on the negative = look for what's wrong and do nothing with their life (which is the worst thing to do with it), then comes to the conclusion that the place is not good. When they do that, very quickly ANY place, EVERY place, ALL place is a piece of junk in their opinion. But life is about experience, so you move to one place and you adapt, you find ways, you get on, and you enjoy it. However there are places where whatever you do they stink. Is Malta such a place? I've been there like millions and I can tell you it's closer to paradise than to hell for people loving sun, beaches, history, architecture, animals, adventure. BUT if your vibe comes from snow and mountain, then would be better to move to Norway or Swizzerland of course. Malta is a southern country not a northern country ok. And the southern mentality is something different than the northern one. Each has its merits anyway but they are different and at the end the choice is yours: follow your hearth not your head. Follow your intuition. Ok I've a question: could you make a video about the quality of tap water in Malta? Tap water is ranked badly according to certain sites. Could you test water for chlorine content? For minerals content? High minerality, higher than 100 ppm, means the water has to be Reverse Osmosis filtered to remove that excess minerals: tap water minerals can't be assimilated by the body, they are thus stored and cause many health ailment cf the book Water can undermine your health from Dr. Norman Walker www.amazon.com/Water-Can-Undermine-Your-Health/dp/0890190372

I've been Malta 3 times it's nice as a convenient, compact place to visit as relatively small island. I didn't think it was a pricey place though I think it's just like Spain or Italy.. My 5 star hotel was only £185 per night in July 2018 for instance. i visited 2016, 2018 and 2021.the first 2x occasions I went with a girlfriend and paid for everything, the 3rd I was on my own after pandemic and didn't notice the price different from any other south med country apart from Turkey which is super cheap. As a single bloke I earn £68k a year (3,700k a month take home after pension) in London and survive easily, in Malta i would need around 50k 3,000 a month euros take home for similar lifestyle i suppose.

I did read that so called "survey" report and think it's skewed and like you said, leaves out a lot of "methodology info"🤔. For instance, Malta spends a high percentage of it's GDP on it's 'world class' Health & Education - up there at par with those of Developed Rich countries........and what about Malta's ENVIABLE "Quality if Life"🚶 🏖 ☀ 😲. My conclusion : in my opinion, and as you said, Malta should be around #25 or EVEN HIGHER when one weighs EVERYTHING up 📃👌 . NO COUNTRY/CITY IS PERFECT, that's for sure. Most government support is far from professional and the overpopulation and construction has ruined most beautiful cities. Take my word for it, there are better countries to move to.
