As much as i love Malta and the Maltese, i tried to put my feelings aside and keep realistic. I was honestly hesitant to put this video, i cropped 8 minutes from it as i felt it was too much to “digest”. Truth needs to be spoken, we cannot “sugar coat” things regardless how painful reality can be for some. I am satisfied with my life in Malta, and extremely happy, but i see a lot of people that went thru hell. I hope my video can be a wake up call and certain things will change, for the better ❤

I am from Estonia and moving to Malta soon. I appreciate your videos very much, Alex! But… I would like to point out that the situation has turned to worse in many places in the world. For example in Estonia all kinds of prices (grocieries, restaurants, fuel etc) have gone up around 40% in the last 2 years. Electricity and heating have been rocketing to the sky… For example when I bought my apartment I paid 200€ for the bills and now 2 years later I pay over 500€… Also just to be said, the salaries remain same here as well and looking at the job offers, they seem to be even lower. I guess, what I’m trying to say is that I don’t think there is many wonderlands to escape to, the economy is harsh worldwide and it breaks my heart reading and listening how people are minded. I honestly don’t think the lower life quality is going to last forever, we just need to wait it out and try to appreciate what we have, doesn’t matter if in Malta, Estonia or some other place… And even though for people who are used to high quality of life the changes in Malta might be terrifing, we should remember things could be way worse than having to pay higher rent or having to work abit more. 😊 And in the end if the financial situation is rough anyways, sometimes having more sun helps to lighten the mood (as I am coming from very dark and cold place) 😂

I loved living there before but now too expensive. The locals are very friendly and kind. Alex, your honesty is refreshing. And you always discuss things from both perspectives. I only wish something could be done about the disgustingly high rental prices and low wages. Most people don't earn enough to live, but only survive. And still send money to their families back home. It truly is sad. There is a lot that needs to change on the island for it to be on par with other EU contries!

Thanks for that realistic update Alex. As a retired/disabled person with a pension, social security, and an allotment adding up to $30,000 per year, I think Gozo is 'do-able'. My expectation is to immerse myself in the culture, to investigate what food I am able to eat, to lease an apartment or house in Zebbug between 700-1000 euros; with all of my overhead I will have more leftover than I have here in California. Why Gozo? The historical significance itself is the most important factor. The scrambling for work and jobs has no bearing in my life, I am done with all that. I was a garbage collector 20 years ago, I might consider some community service in that capacity--it's true, I am not afraid of garbage!

Hi Alex, I’m a newbie on your site. I have gone back and watched many of your vlogs. You do a great job in explaining beautiful Malta. By the way, I watched your video interview with our mutual friend, Ricardo from Cyprus. Very interesting! I’m a Greek Cypriot American and left Cyprus as young boy. I since moved around the world, and became a US Citizen. I’m currently in Thailand, but I’m contemplating of going full circle back to Cyprus soon, to live and retire. Now, I’m very interested in visiting Malta that has always been high on my list and maybe to invest if it makes sense You are a great ambassador of Malta Please Continue, as you have so many subscribers that enjoy your work. 26th September. Hi Alex. Really enjoyed your video. We have been coming to Malta since 2007, now 28 times. Malta , although still lovely and people are friendly (mostly) and so much to see , the problems with rubbish left everywhere is atrocious not to mention Dog Poo. Why they haven't introduced Wheelie Bins beats me. Prices are going up and up like you say. A lot of shops, restaurants have lost all their Maltese staff , which has taken away the lovely experience for the holiday visitors. Like everywhere Rents, Food prices are increasing . But the Rubbish left everywhere is awful. But we will still continue to spend our holidays in Malta as we love it. Alex, we love your videos and your knowledge you share. Thank You. ❤

Informative video, Alex! It appears I lived there for the brief work stint I had in Spring 2019 at the right time, for the prices you're talking about are quite high compared to what I had to pay. But then I think the prices here where I live (California) have also skyrocketed in the past year or two, and as a homeowner (no mortgage), I wonder how younger people are ever going to afford buying a place or even renting sometimes. Thanks for another great video!

Hi Alex I will move to Malta in December to work there for my company instead of in Austria The reason why I wanted to be transferred to Malta is because I have a wife and son who are living in the Philippines and its much easier to immigrate them to Malta than to Austria ... I've already been to Malta for a week in end of May, totally felt in love with Malta I'll have round about 2000 Euros a month, I know the rents are high but I cant see a big difference in the prices compared to rents in Vienna, in Malta you get full furniture apartments and you only have tp pay 1 rent in advance, impossible to find this in Vienna So for me coming originally from Vienna - the prices in Malta dont shock me 😁 Keep up with the good videos

It has also become less attractive as a tourist destination, at least for myself and a couple I know, who used to visit Malta every year. Thanks for the video, which covers a difficult topic, and could easily have resulted in people getting very flustered if it had been less than truthful in describing how Malta has undergone so much change in such a short period of time, and how that has ihad an impact on people's lives.

Hi Alex, enjoyed the video as well. I have nothing to compare it with as I only be arrived this year, in April. I love it here, I like the life in comparison to things back home in the US. Cost of living is better for me, here in Malta, instead of Florida, USA. On the other hand, my husband is not having it so easy. He's been looking for work and it has been difficult. He does construction, but he has been unable to find employer who will issue work permit, and in fact even worked with one company and they promised to issue work permit, but never did and they withhold money owed. It is a practice. He hires foreigners, promises work permits and then does not pay everything when owed. He always hold some back. Eventually one guy left and he was owed €700, and the guy refuses to pay, eventually my husband left as well, and he is refusing to pay €500 that he owes. So, yes, for some Malta is great, but for others it can be a nightmare.

Hi Alex, Your information is correct and the struggle of migrants is the same all around the world. Moving for a better life than their home countries. In the sixties Maltese were leavening Malta for a better life. I was one of those immigrating to Canada in 1967. Now retired and spend my time between Malta & Canada. In Canada the 5 major grocery chains have recorded their highest profits. Rents are no less than $2000.00 monthly (1500 euros) and higher. Seems that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. We also spend time in the winter in the Dominican Republic, same story with low wages and high cost of living. Hopefully a balance will be found. The other problem with many migrants is that they are also helping their families back in their countries and trying to save so they make a big sacrifice by living 3 in a room. Seems this has been happening for decades. it was this way for us when we moved to Canada two families living in one house. you make the sacrifice to try and get ahead. as you mentioned many working two jobs, no different that we did in the sixties in Canada. The best investment you can make is in your education, this will move you ahead.

I visited Malta right before the pandemic in order to get a general impression about the country and consider does in make sense to move there or not. What was attractive for me in Malta: attractive tax system for non-domicile residents who make money abroad remotely, good Mideterranean climate in comparison to Poland where I used to live, English is an official language which is convenient. But my first negative impression about Malta upon arrival changed my initial intention to move there. Here is what I disliked: first, the island of Malta is too overpopulated and densly built, so you feel yourself as in an anthill; second, the island is too dry and lacking greenery, there are allmost no trees, just dry limestones and cactuses; third, in winter it is cold in maltese houses, since the weather in winter is not too warm, but the is no heating inside. Finally, I moved to another country with similar tax benefits but not so overpopulated, greener and more picturesque, with warmer winters and not so hot summers. The only disadvantage here: English is not an official language here, so one have to learn the local language (though in Malta as well one should learn the local Maltese language as well to feel comfortable as part of the society). I just would not advertise the country too much in order not to get it overcrowded by the newcomers as it happened to Malta.

Trust me, the longer you live in Malta, the more your videos will start to sway towards the downside of this tiny island. I am half Maltese and half English. So basically I know all the ins and outs of this country. If your salary is around €3500 per month, you can live a life of semi luxury. I used to own two businesses bringing thousands of Japanese people to this country and I was making around €17.000 per month, and I lived in Portomaso. At that time of course I lived a life of luxury. Frequent holidays to Rome, and business trips to Japan. God if I had to lay out my entire life here, it would take me an eye watering month to write. Malta used to be a lovely place to live, but sadly due to many issues that have been in the news recently, along with the amount of construction, filthy streets, high cost of living, expensive rent as you mentioned, make's Malta a less attractive place to move to. Oh and don't get me started about huge cockroaches running around at night as you walk around Floriana towards Valletta. In short, Malta is like looking at a gentleman from a far , who is wearing a fashionable suit, but the closer you get towards him, you start to realise the suit is of cheap quality, dirty shoes and a bad stench of body odor. So yes, if you are making really good money, Malta has many places to wine and dine, and you always have the cash to travel abroad to a place where it has fresh breathable air and open spaces.

The TCNs from developing countries working on low salaries won't stop coming if you allow them to. What we consider as poor living standards is still better than the desperation back home, no matter how much you tell them not to come. Unless the authorities slam the brakes on the importation of cheap labour, they'll keep coming.
@sarienavandermerwe5660 Жыл бұрын
It's not on the authorities to only slam the breaks on importing cheap labour. Everyone is just trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. It's also about implementing fair wages, reasonable and affordable rent, and living costs. Yes, there are a lot of expats but in pursuit of basic human dignity, i do not believe that anyone should be taken advantage of, in any sense. The Maltese know that they cannot live on salaries being offered, so bringing in so called cheap labour seems to be the answer. You cannot blame a person for taking a chance to have a better life. But sadly, most will be sorely disappointed if coming to Malta!
@ds5379 Жыл бұрын
@@sarienavandermerwe5660The truth is that Malta offers a path of least resistance to come in, even though the salaries are not ok. They will try their luck. For this to stop requires internal political will. Assuming they will be sorely disappointed is fantasy because you don't know the living standards of where they come from.
@sarienavandermerwe5660 Жыл бұрын
@ds5379 You are 100% correct. But just because it might be better conditions here than where someone is from, does still not mean that it is good or acceptable. The greed has gone to another level. It's no wonder people live 10, 20 or more in 2 bedroom apartments. Just trying to survive. I totally agree with you. There has to be changes. And hopefully sooner rather than later. Or Malta might just become a ghost island.
@ds5379 Жыл бұрын
@@sarienavandermerwe5660 yes that's why I am saying the will needs to be internal to change the status quo. Rules must be out in place on how much you can cram in a single apartment, some form of rent caps must be put in place, and the minimum wage raised.
@sarienavandermerwe5660 Жыл бұрын
@ds5379 Absolutely. Just because someone is an expat living on minimum wage, does not mean they shouldn't have a voice. Changes definitely need to be made to protect everyone - both the Maltese and expats. But unfortunately, these are changes that will need to be made at higher levels, where we don't have a say in it. We can always sign an expat petition 🤣 or just hope for the best.

Malta being safe is one of the things that keeps people here. Low salaries, being told to go back to your country, barely having enough money to survive is better than being scared to take out your phone on the streets. I still have family members in Malta and yes, they are Maltese by birth … I myself lived in Malta since 1962 till 1989 and I can tell you, yes Alex things changed drastically in Malta since I left to Australia and a professional visa as I’m a Senior Associate Barrister at a major International Criminal Law Firm and I can tell you, you’re correct. However, most countries including Australia, rent have shot off the roof and whilst I don’t rent, I know of lots of people that can’t even rent. In Australia we have rent assistance by the Australian Federal Government. I also lived in Denmark, France and Sweden and yes, lifestyle is a million time better the Malta however, if you’re not qualified, you suffer that that respect. Lots of progress has been done in Malta since I moved, however with progress comes lots of greed, corruption and above all since Malta is tiny, dirt that you could clearly see.

It is not airbnb problem, it happens everywhere. It is also a culturewise thing, it is related to Maltese dirty habbits. I have seen many times Maltese people throwing dirty water away, directly on pavements, streets etc. When they clean their balcony everything falls down, landing on cars, pavement, people. A few times I almost got it on my face when I was walking. That is their dirty habbit, it has nothing to do with airbnb. Actually the fact that airbnb guests put bags when they leave is a good sign of willing to clean after themselves. I live in non-touristic location and garbage is everywhere because of the system. How the hell you can collect garbage only twice a week and directly from pavements (bags with garbage are on pavements!). Just install a proper sheds for garbage like in civilized country.

MOVING to MALTA? , NO , Just for HOLIDAY , Why ? MALTA IS OVERCROWDED WITH Foreigners, and very high cost of living. & very high property prices. it was good to move by 1990, not present time, for normal people... I had a dream to go living there for good, but that all changed. MALTA had Totally changed in every aspect. , Good for the once who's been living there before the 90's because very well settled & can easily sell & buy property again, but not to move now & start Unless for those who are well off, like many foreigners are doing .... BEFORE YOU MAKE THE Move, spent at least 4 months to see for yourself, Do not listen from others, YOU HAVE to check out yourself First. Simple as that.. I Love ♥MALTA, HAS Many relatives there, & mis them, but to move, it's not for ME.♥
