Gonna be a technical nerd here and say that this really was Rocky's final fight. The fight with Drago was an unsanctioned exhibition and wouldn't have improved or damaged Rocky's record regardless of a win or loss, the fight with Tommy took place in the street so that would definitely never go in a boxer's record, and the match with Dixon was also an exhibition so it wouldn't be included in either Rocky or Dixon's records

yeah, after this Rocky retired and the vacant belt went to Union Cane or whatever the fuck his name was, Tommy beats Cane but presumably goes to jail for assaulting Rocky in the streets or loses it to Dixon.

@@wasabi5338 In my own headcanon I created, Tommy is arrested and likely is stripped of the title by the boxing committee for being unprofessional and pulling a stunt like that, the belt is then given back to Union Cane, and Duke returns to being Cane's manager and cuts all ties with Tommy, whom after being released from jail continues boxing but mostly in small time amateur fights. I know I'm such a nerd with these movies, man

@@user-lk6lu8zr3f Which? Unless there's another piece of media that says that or something I missed, it's my understanding that Rocky IV begins right after Rocky III and he doesn't defend the title against Drago he has to vacate it to even be able to fight him. I'm saying that the rematch with Lang is really Rocky's last professional match as all the others were exhibitions or took place outside a boxing ring

@@timothytoscano1445 He didn't get as much "soft" as *letting his fame rise to his head* . He beat Apollo and believed that with him having reached the top there'd be no hurdles left. To be fair Mickey had some blame in this by having him face 10 fine-but-not-great-challengers boxers to both extend his time on top and prevent him from being seriously injured (which two tough bouts against Apollo already did). "He had to get it all back" Certainly not by going back to his old slugger/no technique ways. Apollo had to teach him how to be a technical boxer. It was clear his old ways of slugging his opponent out was never going to work with Clubber. Rocky got arrogant and too certain of himself. Clubber was "just another challenger". During training he kept basking in his popularity and fame assuming he was going to beat Clubber. That's not going soft, that's going *stupid and reckless* .

I know most people look to his fight with Drago but I actually think this fight with Clubber was Rocky's best. Drago wasn't used to going anywhere past the 2nd round and Rocky was a tank designed to take punishment and drag you into the later rounds. He beat Drago by making the Russian play his game. In this fight, Clubber was a mauler who destroyed people early and that's the strategy that Rocky had here. He went into Clubber's yard and beat him at his own game. Bravo

This is totally how boxing at the highest levels works. No footwork. No angles. No clinching. No timing. Naw, you just take hits and hope your opponent gets tired and sloppy. I think this franchise hurt boxing more than it helped it. Maybe more people watched a match or two, but more people probably believed it was basically human cockfighting too.
@1014p
@1014p 2 жыл бұрын
I generally disregard boxing as its overall little action. Outside of higher tier stuff most fights are slow and a punch here and there. At least the ones Ive attempted to watch. Then you have MMA which at first was pretty good. Fighters actually new several styles and used them. Then at some point every guy is trained to hug your opponent or rush them and tackle. No real form I recall this started about 2008. Then they did this locker room drama garbage and behind scenes bros living together crap. Well then one would think watching martial art competitions would have the styles used and structure. Nope they just seem to rush and tackle. Like boxing a few matches are pretty good but most aren’t. Not looking for gladiator stuff, just if I want street fighting ill go watch it instead. Which is what happened in Rocky 5 I believe. The Rocky movies overall are entertaining and engaging. Maybe not accurate, but entertaining. A few boxing guys critiqued it noted with polishing it could have merit. Interesting comments around Rocky 4 noting if a guy was that stacked in physique and ability he would be a nightmare to take on. Also as many hits they take would put you out on injuries retired pretty quick.

@@1014p There's a lot of action and a lot of cunning on display in a good boxing match. One problem (which I also partially blame the Rocky movies for!) is that a lot of people seem to think that the heavyweight division is the only one that matters; this is a very antiquated mindset, and a holdover from great depression era views on boxing. To me, that has always been the worst that boxing had to offer. Most heavyweight matches look like sleepy bears pawing at each other in my opinion... but a couple of very controversial heavyweight fighters that generated the most coverage of boxing for close to thirty years (Ali and Tyson), and a few successful movies about boxing (Rocky I, II, III, IV, The Great White Hope) pushed the idea that a couple of huge guys just slugging it out was what a typical boxing match looks like. I would argue that MOST boxing matches are more interesting than that, and some are sublime. But boxing is a niche sport, and the best matchups often go completely unnoticed by the public at large. I'm not here as an ambassador for the sport; watch it or don't. If you want to see a match with a lot of skill on display, I'd recommend Pacquiao vs. Coto, Pavlik vs. Taylor, or Lomachenko vs. Linares. I think any of those are more exciting than most movie matchups, and are for damned sure a lot better than all these goofy publicity fights from the last few years. But my main objection to this fight, and movie depictions of boxing in general, (and yeah, I know I took an exhausting scenic route to get here) is that boxing is a martial art, and a deep one at that. There's a lot of footwork, timing, and strategy involved in positioning yourself to inflict damage with your hands and avoid taking it. I just think that fights like this one are a bit of a mockery of an ancient method of combat that wouldn't have stuck around if all it involved was having a neck and chin that could let you take more punches to the face than another guy.
@1014p
@1014p 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrPlokijuhujiko So 3 match ups is the best offer? So boxing has same issue as mma. Extremely few matches to note of being prime examples. I dont think Rocky did any of what you say. Even when I was a kid early 80’s, boxing was a small tv spectacle. Even at that time focus was in martial arts that wasn’t only throwing punches. Even then it was realized once feet get involved and the strict rules are pushed aside boxing itself was antiquated. To me what Rocky showed at least in 3 and 4 was most boxers weren’t super stacked physically. Actually rarely see current bouts where you see the fighter go damn that dude is dedicated. Outside of that its unrealistic to even entertain taking more that 4 hits to the face. That’s before you factor in a trained fighter. Trained fighters even on body durability 2 solid face hits would be bad. Some go more and I realize that. I think your jumping on 4-5 movies as being responsible for ruining an already dying sport even in early 90’s. MMA is soon to follow with all the locker room drama they force into a match.
