The main area the minivan fails compared to SUVs is offroad tire options and suspension travel and clearance. If you need to actually drive over large rocks or tow heavy boats/campers then get a SUV but otherwise the SUV is mostly for the aesthetic skin at the expense of fuel economy, lower center of gravity, ingress/egress ease, storage space, ride and handling assuming roughly the same pricing.
