If you're looking for an 8-seat crossover you don't have many choices but the new Pilot is one of the newest and most interesting. It's not as big as a Traverse, but you'll find more room in the back than a Highlander. It's not as nimble as a CX-9 but it's more fun than a Santa Fe.

I really like the 'report card' at the top of the main screen. It's a great visual aid as you drive down the road discussing the ride, etc. Keep it! The smaller two cameras showing you speaking and the steering wheel/instrument cluster seemed a little distracting. Awesome reviews, Alex. Thanks!

After a 1 year review of 3 row suvs and test driving 7 I purchased a Honda Pilot Elite today. It is not a perfect car but the pros seemed to outweigh the con. Pros 1. Space. Very nice size for its footprint. Much bigger inside than an MDX. Great storage areas throughout. third row livable. 2. Drivability Handles well, great vision lines, braking above average 3. Transmission did not bother me perhaps they have done some reprogramming on the 2017s? 4. IIHS top safety pick + 5. I have had a 07 Pilot for 10 years with no problems 6. I am 6'5" and I fit well in this car Cons 1. Idle stop start is terrible. I will turn it off when I start the car. 2. Lane keep assist is intrusive on curvy Blue Ridge Mountain roads in my area so may turn that off as well 3. Shifter unnecessary but I think I will get used to it. 4. From some angles really, really looks like a mini van 5. No electric park brake on elite trim

An important thing to note in the comparison of the Pilot and the Acura MDX is th eMDX is much smaller inside. Passenger volume in the MDX is 132 cubic feet while the Pilot is 151. the MDX has one of the smallest interior volumes in the three row SUV segment. I have test driven both and I can tell you the MDX feels small inside.

Alex, thanks for your validation on the Touring trim level! I have the 2016 touring and I absolutely love it; as you said I like having the bench seat in the middle for extra passenger capacity and didn't need the few extra bells and whistles on the elite. It is a fantastic crossover and we will keep it for many years.

I've had the 2016 Pilot Touring for a year and love the look, but have had MAJOR problems. Transmission issues (9 speed), constant issues with radio, BT, navi, cameras, loose roof rack and safety features (auto braking) concerns. Honda has replaced the roof attachments, the whole dash touch screen and done multiple software updates. Still having electrical issues that Honda can't resolve. You did a great job in the video, but I would encourage an update due to so many online complaints with issues similar and even worse than mine.

Sir Alex, I am most comfortable to hear your reviews about new cars than other videos! Excellent job there Alex! You take care about almost everything in shorter period of time. Well, I feel that Acura MDX and Honda Pilot do not have any competitions out there.. Pilot is more practical and "common man luxury vehicle"...So Why I said "common man luxury" because it provides the fact that servicing and maintenance are reasonable than the luxury brands.. I drive Toyota and Lexus, both has same engines and few other commons, but of course Lexus has more significantly luxurious interior than Toyota Camry/Corolla etc.. But when it's out the door and using Lexus (e.x. ES330), it tears the pocket lot more than Toyota in term of maintenance and service etc.. Friends, Please do not get offended with this, but that was just my opinion.. I still have the black/beige colored Lexus ES330 that I driver seriously rough on roads and "touch wood", it does not give any complains so far.!! The best luxurious, bit reasonable, comfort, convenience and better handling luxurious sedan on the road.. Its the 2005 year manufactured but I still feel brand new in term of handling, smoothness and style.. :-) I Love my Lexy ES330... I AM in serious confusion to choose between 2017 Toyota Highlander and 2016 Honda Pilot. Highlander has sharp style, more dynamic looking personality and very good interior in the class, whereas, this pilot does fit more of these but not sure how it will be in term of long lasting and durability.. We surely have great reliable vehicle and that is highlander, but for the third row and cargo, pilot wins this slot.. Well, I do not need third row as of now as we have only four persons in family, but when family grows and so does child, we need more room for cargo etc.. So, Guys, I will go for Honda Pilot over the highlander thinking practicality of this vehicle and the 9 speed transmission, though, 2017 Toyota Highlander will have 8 speed... confused here.. also, 2017 HL will have all "Honda sensing" kind of features which will be standard on all trims.. confused here too.. :-)) That's my story out there.. I will keep my study and research until I'll have most basis covered on these two top SUVs comparisons... So till then, have a nice time and be safe on road!

It’s absolutely worth mentioning the Elite trim additions over the Touring trim like the very large pano glass and the comfort options that are added. Not everyone needs the 8 passenger vs the 7 and personally the third row will be folded down a vast majority of its use over time. With 4 passengers seeing the road there is something to be said about using the Elite with the rear folded configuration and those nice captains seats in the second row

Honda is known for it's safety and added a lot crash prevention features that were not discussed in this video! People hauling around family members are more concerned about safety than the acceleration in most cases. Many of the American cars do not score well in overlap front collision testing and that should be mentioned when positioning these cars.

I test drove both the 2016 pilot and 2015 pathfinder. I was very happy with the Pathfinder due to the material used in the cabin which was alot less hard plastics than the pilot, the amount of options for the money and the ride compliance. It was way more child friendly and the access to that back row its way better n easier than that pilot. It was fantastic. I testes the 6 speed transmission pilot and i thought it was adequate. However very disappointed the moment i touch that lever to shift to drive i thought i was driving a 10k vehicle vs an EXL navi thats worth 35k+!!It also didnt like that u had to go to the top model to get the blindspot monitoring for this kind of vehicle? In regards to seating, it is un-realistic to fit 3 adults back there! 2 adults can fit just ok for not a long period. The 8 seat passenger marketing is best suited for kids only. The other thing i found as a safety issue was how intrusive the emergency bake was as I was driving.Very dangerous in frontal impact

I hope that changes next year.

very thorough review. it's confirmed that a mdx would be a better decision vs the pilot even though i like the front of this car instead. some dealers in so cal also want $3k on top of msrp for the elites and tourings! they are also stingy on discounting the ex and ex-l. i've already got written quotes for $5k off a mdx sh-awd w tech package.

Not having a visible exhaust pipe(s) is enough to turn me away. Love the front but the rear without those exhaust just looks bloated and like a space ship or something else. Wish they hadn't done away with that. An optional traditional second row that sits 3 would be nice too. Alex you're amazing. As someone who just shopped for and purchased a 2016 Pilot Elite, the only inaccuracy in this video I noticed is how much the closest MDX to the Pilot Elite really costs. The MDX with Advance and Entertainment is the closest to the Elite with these differences: Full LED headlights on the MDX ("jewel eye"), lumbar on the passenger seat, power adjustment to the steering wheel, the "Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) which adjusts steering feel, throttle response, and shift points depending upon setting), and (I think) power fold side mirrors with auto dimming. The 2016 MDX is not available with 2nd row captain chairs, and there are fewer USB ports and no 115 AC in the second row...Also, the heated steering wheel is a $500 accessory across the MDX line, before installation - even with Advance package. The MDX SH-AWD with Advance and Entertainment is currently listed at an MSRP of $57,230 without accessories, $10K more than the Pilot Elite, which has 10 hp less, but "runs on regular gas". The 2017 MDX refresh will rectify some of the $10k difference with 2nd row captain chairs in the Advance package and more media ports. ...oh, and it's bring back exposed dual exhaust tips. When we test drove the vehicles, there is no denying the MDX has a more luxurious feel to it; but we did not see it as worth $10+K more luxurious.

Apparently you didn't click on "read more" on my comment above that stated the 2017 MDX will rectify some of the $10K difference. There were no 2017 MDXs available when we bought two weeks ago and the 2017 MDX "build your own" didn't exist online....Glad to see Acura's pricing hold the line with the upgrades - still close to 10K difference - whether the differences are worth it is subjective. MDX is nicer no doubt, but $10K nicer? That's debatable.

Hey Alex, love your videos! I had a question. I'm looking for a three row crossover/SUV and I'm considering the Pilot. I went to check out the Pilot EX-L and found a decent amount of hard touch plastic on the doors and the dash, like you said here. While the rooming was palatial everywhere, the quality of some of the interior really bugged me. I also went to check out a certified 2014 Infiniti QX60 with the tech package and was much more pleased with the quality of the interior but I felt the CVT transmission was very sluggish. I then looked at a certified MDX and was satisfied with the quality but was disappointed by the third row space I also went to look at a Certified Mercedes-Benz Gl450 and it had the best third row and best quality of materials. However, the GL450 is around $45,000. The QX60 was $44,000 but the dealership negotiates well, the MDX was $42,000 and I'm sure I can whittle the price of the Pilot to around $33,000 because of prior purchases from this dealership and other perks. I was just curious on your take on my situation. Which one would you go with? Thanks, and keep up the good work!

I am not sure it´s a bad or good thing though. If I want fun I just watch TFL. That said, I think would love to see you making this type of reviews on different models of spaceships, when the time comes. I am considering this vehicle as my next car. I drive a 17 year old GMC Sierra that I worry about though it shows no signs of slowing down, just age. I read reviews that the 9-speed transmission is either difficult to adjust to, or isn't quite right. The Hondalink Infotainment is also said to be slow and unintuitive. The infotainment system is important to me and the Pilot is to get Android Auto and Apple car play in the 2017 model year. Would you consider either or both possible deal breakers when considering the Pilot? I can fix the transmission issue by just buying the 6-speed EX-L model and I can get either the Navigation model or the Honda Sensing model. The Pilot doesn't get both unless you buy the Touring. AAuto will let me use google maps, so that's not an issue. I've heard quirks of the Honda Sensing package, What did you think of that?

Alex: I'm disappointed you did not mention the Ford Flex. Comparing a 2015 Ford Flex Limited 2WD with a 2016 Honda Pilot Touring 2WD with res and navi: Flex is at least $1000 cheaper comparably equipped and often has incentives of several thousand dollars. Flex has standard HID headlights, power folding mirrors and auto park. Passenger volume: Flex 155.8; Pilot 151.7 Fr Head: Flex 41.8; Pilot 39.5 Fr Leg: Flex 40.8; Pilot 40.9 2nd Head: Flex 40.5; Pilot 39.9 2nd Leg: Flex 44.3; Pilot 38.4 3rd Head: Flex 38.7; Pilot 38.9 3rd Leg: Flex 33.3; Pilot 31.9 Cargo volume to Seat 1; Flex 83.2; Pilot 83.8 Cargo volume to Seat 2: Flex 43.2; Pilot 46.8 Cargo volume to Seat 3: Flex 20; Pilot 16.5 As a Flex owner who owned a previous version Pilot, I can tell you that the Flex is a superior vehicle, even though the current generation is really about 2 years old. The Pilot has no more room, costs more, gets slightly better gas mileage and looks like a SUV. The Flex continues to be a sleeper driven by people who really shop cars. BTW, your review of the new MB S550 was superb! Your best yet.

Hi Alex, Greetings from Boston, MA. Is Honda going to address the FM radio issue that all the new Pilot owners are reporting? Lot of static and fading in all the FM channels. Will Honda provide a firmware update to permanently disable the Idle-Stop function that is too slow and annoying?

Excellent review, although a lot of transmission talk. I guess it is good to educate the masses about it.

Awesome review as always, Alex. What's your feeling on the potential negative effect of cylinder deactivation on a thermal engine where you'd have a heat variation between working and non working cylinders? Personally I have concerns with the longevity of the engine with features such as auto start-stop for instance. I can't believe an engine would "enjoy" the heat/cool cycles during a lot of such changes while running. Keep up the great work! Cheers.

Mario Dalla Riva It really isn't a problem, the engine is designed for this and Honda specifically has been doing VCM engines since 20032

Hi Alex , for a long time i wanna to ask the question you, along with every car reviewer out there . Everything is awesome for what u doing and all the details u are giving us , i love it. b But there one thing as a car ownercone to mind , Why you guys never mentioned the reliability ,dependability of a one brand like Honda and how is compare to the other Kia/Hyundai junk that have little to none engenering. Honda can put a heating steering wheel, and cooled seat but Honda /Acura has R@D that wont embarrassed theyre name.

Does it still use belt drive for the valves or have they switched to chains ? Thats a big expense at 60,000 miles if they haven't.

If I sit idling for say....30 minutes waiting on kids at school, will the vehicle cut back to 3 cylinders to save fuel, or is that only when it is driving at highway speeds.....And, thanks for the informative review!

Alex. I need a 3 row SUV with REAL 3rd row. MUST be 8 seater. What are my options for young teens in the rear? Armada? I like the ATLAS but its a 7 passenger. The Tahoe has terrible leg room in the 3rd and you almost have to go to the Suburban or the Yukon XL. Minivan is not an option. Thanks for any help

The zf-9 speed should use a cone clutch to synchronize shaft speeds on the dog clutch 4-5 shift. The rough dog clutch engagement is a major design flaw. Until that gets fixed, the ZF 9 speed should be avoided. The durango, a true RWD SUV with the superior RWD ZF 8 speed and AWD optional, is a much better buy.
