Kyle Hamilton is living proof of the "best player available" draft method. A safety was just about the last thing the Ravens needed last year, but if a player's good enough you bring him in & find a place to put him. As it turns out, that place has been nearly everywhere.

I disagree. He landed in the best team possible that knew *exactly* what to do with him. Other teams picking around that spot had other draft priorities and not only didn't know how to utilize Hamilton's strengths but didn't have the personnel to execute it. Reminded of how Keim for the Cards picked Isiah Simmons so high in the draft and wasted him away playing under Vance JOseph's EZ bake blitz defense.

Roquan and Kyle Hamilton should be considered superstars based on their ability compared to the rest of their position. Madubuike is a star or at least very very close, healthy Humphrey too. People will also just underrate Ravens players because it's kinda expected to "look" great in whatever system they have.
@t4d0W
@t4d0W Жыл бұрын
Madabuike looks like he's breaking out so he may be worthy of the star deal. Kyle Hamilton may be the real x-factor considering how important safety play has been for defenses overall in pass overages and even a better bonus to fit against the run. Also talent helps elevate the scheme and I've seen it before with defenses like the Patriots. So the Ravens aren't achieving top 5 defense results out of scrubs.
@jeremiahw1369
@jeremiahw1369 Жыл бұрын
Superstars are on the Ravens defense, they just haven't been recognized by the national media yet. Roquan and Marlo were all pro though, and should be again. Hamilton is playing like a 1st team all pro and so is Madubuike and Patrick Queen, and Clowney. The depth and lack of weaknesses is the real problem. The individual talent is always underrated until they go somewhere else and become league leaders in sacks. They pressure with 4 most of the time. The personnel is versatile enough to disguise and cover all kinds of zone blitzes and fake pressure.

He's an athletic freak, for sure. Getting him close to the ball is what you want to do it. Be it to help in the run game or to get quick pressure on the QB via blitz. Edit: Good defensive coordinators know how to utilize their star DBs. KC does similar stuff with Sneed. The other good defenses tend to rely on having a lot of talent vs good coaching (49ers, Eagles, and Cowboys). They don't necessarily have brilliant schemes or anything. Macdonald's Ravens defense sorta reminds me of how DC Lou got results with the Bengals a year ago with (arguably) strong tier talent. The scheme adapts well against top QBs and offenses in being able to generate pressures. Their investment in picking up specific athletes in the back 7 are paying off with how versatile they can elevate the scheme. Even better when they are getting a budding star in the trenches with Madabuike. The defenses' ability to be amorphous and window dress a coverage look all the way to the last second is always going to net some success in the playoffs. Hell that was one reason why the Ravens defense were able to throw Burrow off his game in the wildcard round last playoffs.

Good video. Ray Lewis and Ed are very easy to argue as the best of all time at the position and Suggs should be 1st ballot. So yeah, not a lot of those guys around, but even with all 3 on the same unit, some years they were not up to the standard as a defense. Defense is a weak link system, and this particular one doesn't really have any. The individual talent is winning the 1 on 1 battles across the board. Look at the guards on the ground getting pancaked in single pass pro brother. They may not be household names, but they lead the league in sacks because they are good enough to run any scheme and avoid predictability, which was always the biggest weakness under Wink.

To be fair BBs style of schemed defense allows for certain low key 'talents' to stand out. Lawrence Guy Sr. couldn't really start and succeed anywhere but here he is being a massive man to plug his assigned gap. Kyle Dugger was just a very athletic box safety type but he's key when the Pats practically play 3 safeties in dime package. Along with the depth the Pats have for strong safety. Hell Ja'huwan Bentley whose your classic giant mike linebacker that isn't in vogue anymore in the league has a specific early down role for the Pats against the run.

It's a scheme thing, but you wouldn't be able to pull it off this well on another team. A big reason the Ravens are always good is that they're amazing at drafting, so while they don't have flashy star names on the roster besides Roquan, the roster is still good. That's why Bmore had the preseason streak for so long, their depth is better than most teams. It's not just that they scheme well, it's that the Ravens draft well and know how to find value + make great FA signings. Clowney wasn't doing well till he got to Bmore. Half the NFL passed on Hamilton before the Ravens picked him. It's good scheming, but also the Ravens being really well-run and amazing at scouting & developing players. Ravens have always had good defenses and have the 3rd best record as a franchise, cuz they draft/scout/develop incredibly well.

The Patriots have an impressive defensive roster as well like Jac Jones, Gonzalez, Judon, Uche, and Dugger but they're elevated to the next level Because of their impressive coaching. So as a unit they are playing much better than other teams with more "impressive/popular" talent. Like Green Bay Packers.

This seems like the start of a dramatic shift in how defenses are structured, being more versatile/positionless. We’ve already seen other professional sports like basketball find value in moving to more fluid than strict positional players, where the end sum is greater than that of the individual parts. I’ve always viewed the Seahawks and Ravens as cross conference twins in team identity, this seems like a natural fit for the HC job. Ready for the LOB 2.0

Knowing the Ravens, the real gem they would want is a low key versatile 3-tech Lineman that is a game wrecker who can collapse pockets. That way they can pay X-factor guys like Hamilton, Roquan, Marcus Williams on 'top dollar' contracts (but technically cheaper than paying higher impact positions like EDGE, ISO corners). All while drafting edge guys in late first or day 2 to develop them and be complimentary with the elite trench talent. I loved this breakdown, but I respectfully disagree with your conclusion. Marlon Humphrey has been a top 3 cornerback for several years now despite never getting national acclaim. Last season was his best year overall imo, teams basically refused to throw to his side the entire season. Roquan is the nerve center of this defense. Him and PQ are the best LB duo for my money, but I have no qualms if you want to argue Warner/Greenlaw. How Kyle Hamilton fell to 14 still baffles me, but you only need to check the tape to see he's special. They have household names, but the Ravens have rarely gotten the national recognition they deserve so I think that's why these guys don't normally get the superstar label. But they have no shortage of elite talent on defense.

Hamilton succeeding despite falling to 14 is part circumstance and fit. There are few other teams in the league who can make use of his range while playing to his strengths. Stats are deceiving. The 2000 Ravens have inflated stats because they got to play, among others, QBs such as Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith (twice), Tim Couch, washed up Scott Mitchell and Troy Aikman in his final year. This season the Ravens have faced an injured and immobile Joe Burrow and the Bengals had to play Jake Browning for much of the second game. They have also faced DTR with no preparation, Josh Dobbs, the pitiful Matt Canada-led Steelers offense and Ryan Tannehill behind the terrible O-line of the Titans.

They also played CJ Stroud, Jared Goff, Geno Smith and Justin Herbert. They are GOING to play Matthew Stafford, Brock Purdy, Tua, and Trevor Lawrence before the season is over so keep that in mind next time you cherry-pick stats.

To be fair its the same thing with the Bengals defense last season. Credit to Lou Anarumo the DC but half their season was going up against the AFC North of flunky QBs among other teams who didn't have their QB1 or had a bad starter out there. But the Bengals defense showed up against strong QBs and in the playoffs. This season Macdonald has the defense executing well but they also ran through the AFC North of flunky QBs especially since Deshaun and Burrow are out. That doesn't take away that the Ravens defense showed up against Jared Goff reminding him that he'll always be 2018 or Geno Smith. They also did well against Burrow in the wildcard last season by confusing him with defensive looks that changed up in the last second. The defense for the most part has been consistent and these next 4 games which include the Rams, Jags (only with Lawrence), Niners and Fins will solidify it as they prep for the playoffs.

It sort of IS a blitz when you drop a lineman and send a DB. It may not count as one, but you're blitzing with a DB. Ravens are doing a lot of things right.

In a lot of these highlights the ravens are playing 2 d linemen. 95 is a olb lol. They have played a ton of dime and nickel. Idk what you mean about not having superstar players though. Only 1 player has more tackles than roqaun since he came in the league (he is probably a future hall of famer). Kyle Hamilton is looking like one of the best safeties in the NFL right now and when Marlon is healthy no one is catching balls on his side of the field

Justin Madubuike, Kyle Hamilton and Roquan Smith may not be superstars but they're playing at an All-Pro level this season. But ultimately credit has to go to Mike McDonald for turning this defense from the worst in the league against the pass to the best. Hope he stays with us after this season but I doubt it.

I would argue the game has changed with rules that don't allow for players to opperate with the freedom that Ed and Ray had when it came to collisions...it was a different game. By modern standards Hamilton and Ro are this NFL's version of a star.

I’m not sure why so many people in this comment section seem to take issue with the idea that this team doesn’t have any superstars. In my opinion a superstar isn’t really just about playing like a superstar it’s partly about your reputation as a player and how that reputation is magnified publicly and a mystique is created around you. You can be a great player and not be a superstar. Roquan Smith has been a very good/ great MLB for some time now, before he got to Baltimore, but I would not call him a superstar. That’s not a slight. He got a 100 million contract with no fuss from the Ravens, which tells you all you need to know, because they don’t just hand those out. I love what I’m seeing from Kyle Hamilton, but he is young and still ascending. As tremendous as he looks now. Let’s now crown him yet. Offensive Coordinator’s still have Plenty of time to watch him and continue to probe for weaknesses. Love Madabuike as well. He is becoming the kind of interior pass rusher I hoped he’d become and the kind Baltimore has desperately needed for some time now. But again, he’s having a breakout season. Let’s see him do it for a couple of seasons in a row, at this level, before we label him anything other than a very good player who has shown improvement over the past couple of seasons. Marlon Humphrey is a very good corner. He is not great, as some have noted on here. He can be got, which is fine, it’s the NFL, I love the way the defense is playing. The Baltimore Ravens have always been less represented in the national media despite the fact that we have been one of the most consistently successful franchises in the NFL. Thats due to our style of play. I’m ok with that as long as we keep winning.

@@AlexRollinsNFL Lamar did not have his best game but the Ravens held the Chiefs to zero TD's in the second half. At the end of the game there were two clear pass interferances by the chiefs that were not called both which would have set the Ravens up first and goal. Seems like they also were siding with the Chiefs in the 49ers game too not calling holdings for the entire game.

LOL I dunno about his in game adjustments especially in crunch time. Along with keeping G-RO as OC for so long when that offense got stale and predictable the last 3 years. BUT the fact he's willing to change his staff up to attain results with forward thinking guys like Macdonald on defense and Monken on offense shows the kind of flexibility an HC needs to adapt for the better.
