Had a trainee with me one day and he was trying to back off a street. I could see him literally about to have a panic attack because of the cars waiting. I told him to STOP. He stopped and looked at me. I told him to listen to me. I pointed at all the cars infront and behind him and told him that every car can F*** off. You OWN this street right now. They can either patiently wait for you or turn around and go the other way. Either way, he was getting that truck backed in where it needed to go. I could sense the tension lifted after I told him to stop despite traffic hold up because he knew I didn't give a shit about the traffic. All I cared about was him remaining calm and collective so he didn't have an accident.

The city of Chicago should move all companies uses 53 foot trailers in hauling their products outside the city limit to new locations. No exceptions

Few things I think should have to be done: 1) Create regulations for companies that use trucks to haul products that forces them to use daycabs instead of sleeper trucks 2) Limit parking for 4-wheelers near dock door so that trucks have enough room to maneuver 3) Make companies create detailed instructions for delivering truck drivers (some do have, some don't), make it their responsibility/obligation. If you are delivering to a place that you have never been to (which is the case for truck drivers, 80-90% of th time), it is obvious that you might end up in a situation like his

And our cities have been bled tax dollars for decades to the suburbs and Asia especially for the cheap now sunbelt states where states give millions even billions like to Elon Musk to leave the West and North. Really PART OF THE PROBLEM... BLEED CITIES TAX $$$. Heck Chicago has whole suburbs just companies.... so they do not have to pay taxes to municipalities who have school districts and police forces etc. Sure this was difficult.... Shows SKILLS one needs and HAVE PRIDE THEY MANAGE TO. Sorry for giving you a bit of grief... Just For a Legacy City and these neighborhoods were laid out late 19th century early 20th century... with residential areas of GORGEOUS OLD HOMES we only got a glimpse of. You should see cities in the East.... NYC and Philly and narrow streets without even wide sidewalks lined with green-space to in how Chicago is laid out and OMG the MOUNTAIN areas of the East where older cities are row-housing on narrow streets still have old mills on as to now how to use a dock as a PROFESSIONAL. His complaining to me knowing how much worse it could be in even small older towns.... has me do a eye-roll. Sure it takes skill. YOU THEN PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK AND KNOW YOU CAN DO IT AGAIN WITH SKILL as no neighborhood streets of major cities are as a huge lot of a Distribution Center. IT WAS INTERESTING... just the belly-aching was a bit much.

FMCSA allows you to drive, even under laden, in an off duty status as long as you are not doing any driving in furtherance of your company. in your situation after you delivered the load and your sole purpose of driving is to find a safe place to park you are allowed to make that move in an off duty status.

I wish the United Kingdom DVSA had the same anmount of logic as the U.S DOT, we have to park wherever the time runs out, and we don’t have truck stops, and barely any rest areas, our country does not cater to trucking or the people that provide everything to the economy, it’s horrific.

You should look into HOS regulations. PC is not borrowing time. You’re allowed to use it when you’re not advancing for the company’s benefit and it doesn’t take away from any of your time. Chicago is a tight fit. My company is based out of there and I’m oversized at 90ft long.

@@alfaseeds13 It's an apples and oranges comparison. European cities are much older than American cities, so of course city roads in Europe will generally be much narrower. My point was Alex did a fine job (with assistance of receiver) backing into very narrow dock off of a 19th century road that was never intended to safely accommodate a modern semi truck. Alex even pointed out in video that much Chicago freight is delivered via smaller class B trucks. And, yes, our interstate highways were great when built in mid 20th century, but much of the system today is a national disgrace that doesn't even come close to meeting the needs of 21 century USA.

Ask the receiver to send somebody out to help you as you're backing. They see trucks backing in there all the time, their people can tell you exactly how to line up and when to turn. Save your sanity.

Chicago is a pain even in smaller trucks so kudos to you for that one. I drive there daily for my route (class c) and even that can be a pain so I couldn’t imagine doing it with a trailer. People in our city drive like maniacs and I found the best thing to do at stop lights is just block 2 lanes. Kinda sucks for people but most of the intersections are “no turn on red” anyways so you really don’t hold up the traffic and it gives you the room needed to swing the turns. Most guys on my route in semis are in shorter trailers and day cabs so I can imagine it’s quite a bit more difficult doing it with a sleeper and a 53’

Just a tip plan your delivery in Chicago so you will have at least 3 hrs left when you deliver. Especially if you deliver at 3. Traffic after 3 will kill clock fast on any highway out of the city. On your way from your Pu yo may have to break your 3 to 3 rule so you can get as far as you can the day before.

In just 2 days, I have managed to obtain a new bi-weekly customer to receive paper rolls. Let's call it phase #1! I look at it this way that's 2 more deliveries a month, my uncle I think would like that. The routiing is North Carolina (yard) -Virginia Shipper -Georgia receiver - Georgia (yard) - bring empty to -N.C. yard 2 day turn around. Hey Alex, should I tell you what I'm sending you for a late birthday present? Maybe I'll leave you guessing?

When I was in college ( many years ago) , I worked at a warehouse. The night time manager was the owners son. He wasn’t the brightest bulb in the drawer. On his first night there, he told several trucks to go to the wrong delivery doors. It wasn’t really hard to understand, if it refrigerated/ frozen items; take a wild stab in the dark at where it’s going. This so called ‘ delivery manager’ improved marginally but even his dad had to move him a few months later. Outside of the delivery bays , was several signs that said in large florescent letters ‘ No Parking, Truck Deliveries Only ‘. There were several fast food places across the street and a tow truck company right next door to us. We routinely called the tow truck for idiots who apparently couldn’t read English or notice the blatantly obvious. There were many irate people who came back from eating irate and had to go next door to pay a $65 release fee for their car. It amazed me at how stupid people are. Did they think those signs were there as a suggestion or recommendation ?
