People were curious about why I didn't really acknowledge Jacob Collier, so here we go -- I think he's a genius + he's one of the most talented musicians in the world. He deserves every ounce of his success and so on...but that doesn't mean that I enjoy listening to his music. He loves to make these veeeery complex arrangements with really strange harmonies, and that's just not really for me. I would never say that he's a bad musician or anything. I went through a phase in college when I was obsessed with people like him, Snarky Puppy, Lettuce, etc. The more complicated, the better. But that's just not really what I'm into right now. To each their own. Hope everyone has a good weekend + stay safe 💖

@@portisheadthird3 facts...great video, but if his point was that the nominations should be defining albums of that period that you can't discredit Teenage Dream for that, one of the biggest pop albums of the decade. I understand it's not for everyone but don't think it's fair to discredit it as boring, generic pop when it had some of the decades biggest hits

ikr Jacob Collier is not for everyone, and that's why I was so surprised when he got nominated for AOTY, he's not mainstream enough I thought. Could be because of his bonds with MJ's producer Quincy Jones and jazz's massive legend Herbie Hancock

honestly for anyone who hasn't listened to the collier album (Djesse vol. 3) it's way more accessible than his previous albums, I can almost guarantee that you'll like at least 2-3 songs from it. the album has a pretty good amount of mainstream appeal with features like ty $, daniel caesar, tori kelly even rhapsody

Unlike movies, music is hard to grasp. Someone who likes blockbusters like Avengers would find it easier to like Driving Miss Daisy than someone who likes pop music to like an experimental album, so if every nominated album are indie and experimental or alternative, fans would feel disconnected. As an alternative fan I feel that Grammys should serve fan favorites to a certain degree for this reason and also that the pop industry needs their fun too. It's not too easy to make a catchy hit. But the problem is the Grammys are carrying it too far.
@TestTest123ization

@@cherrynado I hear you. I do feel that Grammys should be relevant (in response to the original commenter's statement). But personally I do know that people would get excited and flock to a KZbin video if the artist gets nominated or wins a Grammy and they would comment on how they feel about the winner. There are people who take Grammys seriously or if not, at least as a source to know which music they should listen to. Another thing I thought about is how does one become an academy member? If it's about topping the charts then more pop artists will be academy voters and would lean on the music they're familiar with. Also artists don't listen to music like critics do. They have to write and record their own music, so I think they don't invest as much time and energy as critics in listening to albums.

I personally think that Born this Way and Beyoncé were amazing albums that deserved their nominations. At the time of their releases, they were both considered the magnum opus of the two artists respective careers. They both brought something new and innovative to pop. Lady Gaga blended themes of acceptance, love, being true to who you are with electronic, metal, and even jazz sounds while Beyoncé created an album about the liberation of a woman that was beautifully sonic with its r&b, pop, electro pop, and a little bit of soul. Plus they both made wonderful visuals for the albums. Lady Gaga was creating weird fantasy short films and Beyoncé made a whole visual album. In my opinion, just because something is mainstream doesn’t mean it lacks artistry, thought, or value. Then again, this is just my opinion.

You talked about user score and how a lot of the albums not nominated had higher ones, but consider that the albums put out by superstars have a lot more exposure than the relatively obscure ones which are only listened toby their fanbases, and thats why they have a higher score, while people (specially rival fandoms) might intentionally give bad reviews. Not to say that it's not good music, but in that regard at least things might not be so black and white.. Another thing I disagree on is 1989. I'm not a very huge taylor swift fan, and i've only recently gotten into music, but i remember when the album came out. I went to an all boys school, and half my class knew the lyrics to Blank Space. When i went to pick up my sister from her school once, i remember there was a huge group of girls singing that song, while no one had even heard of any of the others. I live in a country where english isn't the first language, and I'm from a relatively remote town where the music is even more ignored. Not to say the other albums weren't great, but if you take in the sheer impact of 1989, it easily washes the others out. All that said, the grammys are a scam and the weekend deserved better.

Artists who got snubbed and why: Ariana Grande: Ariana should’ve gotten Best Pop Vocal Album, but Billie took that award home. (Of course, not implying that Billie’s album wasn’t good, in fact, I’ve been a fan of her since 2017). Even in Billie’s speech, she said that she thought Ariana deserved it. All three singles from Thank U, Next took up the top 3 spots on the Billboard Hot 100. Melanie Martinez: Melanie made a film to go to with her long awaited sophomore album, K-12. She even released a deluxe version and went on the K-12 Tour. Melanie worked on this album and film for four years straight, yet she wasn’t even nominated for a Grammy. Mac Miller: After Mac’s tragic passing, his album was nominated for a Grammy. The Recording Academy flew Mac’s parents out to the Grammy’s, and his mother had a suit made. There wasn’t even a tribute to him and he did not win a Grammy. Instead, the Grammy went to Cardi B. I’m tired and I can’t think of more, so reply with more :)

I think using Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream as a clickbait on the video cover, saying that it was an album that should’ve won the AOTY and in the video saying that “the others [that lost the award] could’ve been replaced” it’s not cool. Teenage Dream is a cultural reset for pop music and most people just see the album as a radio playable album, and does not see that the album has a meaning that is: the perfect love, that teenage dream it’s just a dream, as Katy sings on the very last track “It’s not like the movies”. And there is a second factor, that is: Critics does not like Katy Perry. Anyone can notice this digging throughout her discography. Critics say that she should change, be more mature, she did it. Then the same critics say that she needs to go back to her bubblegum pop, she did it. Then critics say that she can’t evolve and that she sounds more of the same. So, please, have a little respect to an amazing artist work.

as a taylor swift fan, it's funny that he mentioned that 1989 was her "sellout" album. considering she has said publicly that she completely changed her entire style with the specific goal of getting that second aoty grammy. she was devastated that red didn't win, which obvi it's still one of her best to this day, so she committed to making the perfect pop album.

I love Adele for acknowledging that Lemonade deserved album of the Year. In my opinion, 25 was not her best project. Lemonade took many different genres and elements and blended them beautifully. The album itself tells a great story of not only cheating & heartbreak but of the issues we as Black people face. It was a cultural reset and it was snubbed HARD, but I’m glad to know critics acknowledged it’s greatness. Lemonade wasn’t album of the year, it was the album of the century!

My issue with this is that it ignores just how many people actually listened to albums from artists like Joanna Newsom or Animal Collective. This kind of data analysis works if you consider what the Internet thinks is good but in the real world, I can guarantee way more people enjoyed that Katy Perry - Teenage Dream album than any of the snubs you listed. And similarly, its easy to call a lot of those choices forgettable, but I can guarantee even in 2021 more people are listening to 24k magic from Bruno or those older Taylor albums than those danny brown, RTJ, Joanna Newsom projects. I disagree a lot with the Grammys but they aren't a ceremony simply for the internet.

Yes. People think because an album is popular and made by a mega pop star it’s trash. Part of what makes an album great is its ability to reach people and define the times. I don’t agree with snubbing smaller artists or less commercialized music to reward the “big names”. However, when I think back to music from my senior year of HS/college years in the early 2010s, I think of Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Katy Perry, etc., and not any of the indie artists I used to listen to back then. There’s something to be said about that. And honestly, everyone knows it’s the Scammys anyway nowadays, so idk why everyone gets so worked up about snubs every year.
