Algebra - Simplifying Radicals (part 2)

I want you to find this if you're looking, so, what we're doing is called Simplifying Radicals, or Simplifying Square Roots. Specifically, we cover how to take the square root of variables, as well as how to simplify (aka "rationalize") square roots in the denominator. YAY MATH!

Only math videos that I can understand and make the whole way through. I used to not like how you can hear his students in every video but now I like it because they ask a lot of "obvious" questions that I'm wondering myself lol. Most math teachers don't think of clarifying some simple things so it's nice that most of the things I'm wondering myself are usually asked and answered. Also, I like how he is always very respectful when answering these "obvious" questions. A lot of teachers get frustrated, which is understandable, but I don't think I've ever seen this teacher get frazzled.

Honestly I’m 26 years old and back to college and having the first formal math class in over a decade. I really am so sad I didn’t have a teacher like you when I was younger. I hated math and I felt like I wasn’t as smart as my friends cause I just couldn’t understand what our teacher were was saying. +lexbogie1 The 50 square root of z is the reduced version of z to the 101st. He took the 100th and multipied by 1/2 to get rid of the square root. That gave him the 50, then he multiplied by the square root of z left over inside.

Man it’s a good thing I found this because if I hadn’t I would’ve gone into my algebra test on radicals knowing absolutely nothing, (the test is tomorrow) and I’ve been trying to get these down for two weeks. The only way to get such scenarios is where the root is of a perfect square anyway, so the solution is to just solve for the square root (in this case, the root of 4 is 2). The answer in this case would just be 3/4.

No, because the root of 4 is 2. The denominator becomes 2 + 2 = 4. However, under what he was talking about, yes, because the root of 4 - 2 is 0, so you would be multiplying the denominator by 0, which you can't do

in the end of the video you write down an example that you don't solve and I tried it myself but I'm not sure. Correct me if I'm wrong but is the answer 3/4? I got the square root of 4 and added it to the 2 or do you still have to do the whole negative twin thing?

doesn't necesarily need to be a perfect square, it could be square root of 5 + whatever digit is the actual square root of 5. then you would pass right through that step without ever realizing you put a zero in the denominator. (unless you know the square root of 5 off hand.)

Looking at 2/(2+sq.rt.3) and the lesson on Rational Exponents, how come the problem and (2+sq.rt.3)^-2 aren't mutually equivalentl? I remember that negative powers turned into fractions such as the problem, but why doesn't that solve the answer? The root isn't in the denominator any more. :/ Is it because we're simplifying and not solving, or am I totally missing something?

I know this is a late reply but you can't do that because they're not like terms.If it was 4 root 3 minus 2 root 3 then you would get 2 root 3. You can ONLY add or subtract like terms.
