+RealityCheck6T9 He definitely was, Sacha knows that English inner city slang has it's own grammatical structure, it's technically sound, and any native standard dialect speaker can understand it with ease. He wasn't even using any location specific slang either. Rooney tried to act like he had trouble understanding Ali G, as if the character was completely beneath him. Usually most people will entertain Ali's questions and buffoonery. Rooney was profiling for sure, maybe not racially but definitely culturally. There's always some superficial judgement, and they're always taken aback, I mean that's why Ali does the get up, but it's usually never this rude.

I prefer descriptivism over prescriptivism as much as anyone else, but Ali G's way of speaking doesn't really resemble any known dialect of the English language as far as I'm away. It does have similarities to Cockney or maybe Jamaican English, but large parts of it remain freely invented. Perhaps that's what Runey was getting mad at Ali for; in other words I suspect he called that he was being trolled.

This got him suspended for 3 months. Andy Rooney wrote a column in 1992 that posited that it was "silly" for Native Americans to complain about team names like the Redskins, in which he wrote in part, "The real problem is, we took the country away from the Indians, they want it back and we're not going to give it to them. Anyway, I’m not one of those people who say white people are all racist, I don’t know why you would think that in the first place to begin with. Anyone can be racist regardless of colour or creed, whoever it is I will speak out against it.

He didn't sign up to be a part of Ali G's comedy skit. He's probably a busy man with a tight schedule who grudgingly agreed to a 5 minute interview for something he thought was serious. Then he quickly cottoned on that it was a some sort of a joke and that he was being made a fool of. He could've played along like Noam Chomsky did, or he could've gotten annoyed and acted rude like Donald Trump did because his time was being wasted. He chose the latter. That doesn't make him an asshole. I love Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy stylings, but I also recognise what he does is sly and involves him being dishonest in the way he sets people up.
