This was during a very brief period where Layne wasn't using H. You can see it in his face. He had gained some weight, he looked good/healthy. If only he could've stayed this way.

Such a shame man..you could tell he badly wanted to be done with the addiction.. but it's grip was too strong and losing his girl was the final nail in the coffin. I had my own struggles with opiates and I've been clean/on suboxone for 3 and a half years (started to ween off finally)...and layne's music was a huge part of my life before but especially during my addiction and still is after. Wish he could've found his way out of it and wish I could thank him for how much his music has helped me and so many other people.

jondubb35 wasn't using? He's clearly loaded here. He's obviously high on heroin here, because that was Layne's 'thing'. He wasn't only high here, he was in terrible condition. If you can't hear it in his voice then I don't think you've seen anyone who takes large amounts of opiates. He's only 25 here, but he didn't sleep, he didn't eat, he didn't take care of himself at all. He started covering his hands an losing teeth just over a year later.

Thank you for posting this interview. When I need my fix of Layne just talking and being his sweet self, this is where I come. If this had been on CD or VHS it would be so worn out by this point it would be unplayable. I enjoy as always his soft spoken manner. And, sorry if this is harsh, but to all the ignorant people saying he sounds quite because he was so high, get a life. Layne was always soft spoken. If you go back to his early interviews, before H ever entered the picture, he was soft spoken then as well. Layne was one of those people who was very humble and shy. When he spoke, he put a lot of thought into the words before he said them. He was extremely intelligent. I hate that even now, 15 years after we have lost him, people are still so intent on fixating on his struggle with addiction. Can't we just one time enjoy him as a person? He was a human being like all of us with his own thoughts, personality, and feelings. When people, even on KZbin comments and even after all this time, have to continually bring up drugs--you are acting no better than the industry and the journalists who beat this poor guy down and quite possibly made it even harder for him to get better. If I was called a junkie everyday no matter what I did, whether I was sober or not, there might be a time where I would say #$_& it and just keep using. The old adage that if I am going to be accused anyway then i may as well partake. IDK. It just upsets me that, now, after we have lost him rude things still have to be said. So many people do not know crap about his story because if you did you wouldn't post that stuff. Some of us have done loads of research and found out all we can about this great person. We know that he wasn't always high, that he was on Methadone maintenance (accounts for weight gain at times), and that he wanted to be sober. If you have never been an addict of anything, let one H, you have no idea how hard it is to not only stop but stay clean. Staying clean is the hardest part. And the fear of withdrawal is enough to keep anyone using. Once you fall off the wagon, you know you have to go through the hell of withdrawal all over again. For some people, that thought is too much to handle so they continue to use and it becomes a cycle. I am guessing if any of you are on here, you are a fan of him, so why then bring all the BS? Let's just celebrate who he was and the talent he brought to the world. In his own words, he said he didn't want to be known for his mistakes but rather for what he brought to this world. Let's honor that for him. He would be 50 this August. If you have interest, the yearly Birthday Celebration and rememberence show is at the Moore this year on August 19. I hope those of you than can go will. All the proceeds are donated by Nancy to help addicts. It's for a great cause and we get to honor and remember this gentle man with the voice of an angel.

+Conrad Gonzales now that you guys said it, both things ring a bell lol.. I can definitely picture Layne possibly being in Taproot.. I remember when I first heard them the first thing I thought was how the singer seemed to try sounding like Layne or just tried using his vocal style and things like harmonizing lol.

This is the nearing end of a very tough year for Layne, but he seems to be in pretty good spirits here. Amazing to think that they would record Jar of Flies about a week after this video was recorded. If Layne wanted it, he could've held the world by the balls, he could've been the biggest rock star of that era. But that wasn't Layne and I can relate, and I'm also thankful they didn't sell out and go mainstream. Jerry really wanted that, but Layne kept it raw.

@@MegaMasterkiller666 Using Heroin the way Layne did is a brutally traumatic experience, the way it drastically changes your brain and physiology. Imagine being transported into the body of a person who can't think, can't eat, can't feel, and has ZERO passion for any of life's pleasures or pursuits with one exception: an overwhelmingly desperate drive for chemicals -- this need has hijacked the brain's survival priorities as the number one MUST. Valued above food, water, shelter, sex. Welcome to hell: to be broken mind and body.

I do too. In fact I speak of him so often (or have spoken about) so many times and to so many people some associate Alice in Chains and Layne in particular with me, when they hear one of his songs they tell me it reminded them of me hahah. That's cool to be associated with Layne but honestly I speak of him because he truly inspires and amazes me and I KNOW he can touch people with his voice and music, no matter what they listen to usually. Also when best singers debate comes up, I know I have the exodia of singers at the back of my hand and winning every time haha. Layne just makes easy work out of 99% of singers just like that... Cheers tho, gladdens me to know I'm not the only one and he lives through all of us and that we ain't crazy... Or we are but who cares 😂 Layne Staley forever 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥

Love this!,I watched rage that night in Jan 94,and also went and saw them[ I was able to walk to the gig!] in Oct. 93 at the Horden Pavillion,and sorry for repeating this one again again,but Layne stage dived during a solo and landed on the people right in front of me with his face in front of mine,he yelled out something,but he was being mobbed from all sides by much younger kids,putting their hands down his pockets etc...I kept my hands in my[soaked with sweat pockets]-man it was Hot near the front,and I stumbled back to my friends,and some drone the next day said he beat me up.......Total Bullshit,didn't lay a hand on me,and I didn't on him,can't say the same for the crowd of all boys around me!....I think he yelled out "Fuck I'm out of here",but I can't be sure,but some road crew guys,were justifyably busting through the crowd to help him,and did,cool memory for sure,and Kurt was still with us then,April after the January rage hosting,was such a confusing heavy time I remember.

Layne got his voice power back some time after Dirt, then the maturity became noticeable. He cleaned up from heroin during Lollapalooza, then started using again on and off. He then started in October 1993 and didn't stop until January 1994. I mean it is possible that he lost a couple of teeth. But I also noticed the difference in his face when his using heroin. It becomes sunken and there is a lot of teeth grinding. So that is also a possible explanation on why he sounds different sometimes.
@irinairinka6915
@irinairinka6915 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah he lost teeth. It's even notisable here that his teeth aren't in the best shape,like when you compare them to 90-91, the Moore. The Unplugged sounds the way it does in a big way because he makes it a point not to show teeth. I've been there,I know the shapes you make, the faces, the closed mouth smile. It's a shame,no doubt about at,and then we would not have those vulnerable,eary, haunting performances if not for his pain. Grateful for having him at all. He was a gift to the world.
