Damn, I heard that this took like 50 takes! They showed us a quick edit of a few of the mess ups just then.. if you notice at one point Layne is wearing shades and the next cut, he isnt... I hope it wasn't true and it didn't take that many. He looks so rough, but it didn't stop his talent one bit. Uhh, unless the person reading this is on drugs and in that case, Layne sucks! He is so much better sober!

Well really those errors and the authenticness are what give it that “heart and soul.” I don’t mind autotune with also super processed trap beats and electronic crescendo open hi-hat EDM percussion shenanigans. But if you tried taking this, and auto tuning everything, I would throw it out the window because it would sound like unremarkable, C-tier country music. But Layne and Jerry’s gritty harmonizing is what separates Alice In Chains from the pack.

Layne was clearly embarrassed at the mistake. Jerry jumping in immediately to point out that it’s normal to make mistakes, that they hadn’t played a show in a while before this, and to lighten the mood, was nice to see. Even Layne wound up laughing it off and going on with the show. As tragic as the rest of Layne’s story would be after this, it’s clear that his band mates loved him.

@Fck KZbin By the time Layne wanted to quit for good he knew that he was gonna die no matter what. If he quit he was gonna die from widthdraw and if he kept going eventually he was gonna OD. In his last interview he admitted he knew he was dying. And with a drug like heroin it’s not just something you can stop like weed or even alcohol. It’s a hell of a lot harder to quit heroin.
@darcfase2o79
@darcfase2o79 3 жыл бұрын
@Fck KZbin No I don’t think you know your drugs. The science of what heroin does to the brain is pretty fascinating if you look it up. Heroin and weed are two completely different drugs. Heroin is one of the hardest drugs to quit because of what it does to your brain. Yes quitting is possible but it’s incredibly hard. Quitting weed is as easy as snapping your fingers. Drugs are overhyped in Rock. Yes, several all time greats either died from an overdose or had severe mental issues due to drug use. But most all time greats did not. It's just that drugs are prevalent at concerts, clubs, festivals, etc so they are associated with Rock. For example, many people think Pink Floyd did a lot of acid when in reality the most they ever did is smoke weed because they were deadly afraid of LSD after what happened to Syd (of course except for Syd Barrett). Same with the Beatles. Not that acid is even bad like heroin/fentanyl, meth, coke, amphetamines, etc.

"What's my motivation here" is the most sincere and respectable thing about the whole show imo. Being a recovering addict who would listen to this exact song while kicking, waiting for my dealer and even while getting loaded, I never really understood how selfless it is to do this for not only his bandmates but fans everywhere. He must have known that it would be the last thing recorded for release and yet he knows that in his world, he has many better places to be that would be more enjoyable. Hating public life and being strung out are the two worst combinations because there is absolutely no reason to be in the spotlight, yet he chose to because in his head, it was over and this would be his lasting memory for his friends, family, and fans. Thank you for doing so much for people like me and your fans all over the world Layne, you will always be remembered and listened to.

Man, that's heavy. I was addicted to heroin so badly that it made me have a psychotic break and I had to be admitted to a psych ward. This was while my ex was being extremely abusive and I guess I couldn't take it anymore. He was actually the one to introduce me to pills in the beginning and later, we went from pills to shooting heroin. My mental state was always fragile, and looking back, it was only a matter of time before I lost it. Once, I OD'd in the bedroom my parents were letting us stay in, and when the EMTs came, it was this huge thing. It woke my parents and my brother and his wife and son up and everyone saw me laying there while they were trying to save my life. My mom thought that I had another brain hemorrhage. She didn't know about my heroin addiction. The doctors were the ones to tell her and I can't forget the look on her face. I was still really out of it but I remember the mix of anger and sadness on her face and she looked at my ex who was staring at me with a look of malice. What the fuck did he expect though? That they weren't going to bring up my addiction and the fact that it was an overdose? My mom told me she wanted to kill him right then and there and I don't blame her. If I wasn't so in love with him and if I never let him into my life, things would have been extremely different. It's been about 7-8 years since we broke up and it was the best decision of my life. I now have an amazing and loving fiancée and I'm sober. Fuck drugs. Fuck heroin. I think Layne's performance of Nutshell is the most heart wrenching thing I have ever seen next to Scott Weiland's last interview. You can see the pain on his face and the sadness in his voice. I think he knew that his addiction wasn't going to end well. I want to reach out and hug him. He looks so miserable 😢

his ongoing condition made pulling this set off infinitely more difficult than it could've/should've been and no doubt he'd been screwing up along the way, when he was there to screw up at all. he'd likely been having to fend off doubts and concerned MTV/record label people with reassurances of some kind and he must've felt all of their pissed off, judgemental eyes burning a hole through him at that moment. but also, I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about.

Sometimes I forget that Layne Staley was an actual living breathing human being, He died before I was aware of his existence cause I was too young, and I suppose he was always like some sort of a story character to me, or a person someone wrote about in their poems. Distant. And then sometimes, I watch a video like this or an interview and I somehow just end up being shocked, as if I'm not aware of how human he was before I see a proof of it. For example, When he said "Fuck" and "What's my motivation here?", he suddenly shook me out of my imaginery that this is a movie character. It makes me even more sad. Anyways, great performance. @@janebetridge2283 He gave Layne another chance (even after the mistakes Layne made during this song that were not released), and he followed Layne's lead in making light of the situation. I realize that often "behind-the-scences" Jerry could be judgmental, seemingly jealous, and controlling regarding Layne. I realize that Layne was hurt a lot by times when Jerry would criticize Layne and put too much pressure on Layne. My comment was specific to this specific coverage.

One of most underrated bands of all time. People talk about the grunge era, and so many overlook AIC. To me, they are the epitome of grunge. Their sound defined the era. Nobody, and i mean nobody had Layne's unique vocal range and sound. I believe it was Mike McCready that talked about how you could literally feel Layne's voice resonating outside his body, on stage. It was that powerful. He and Jerry harmonizing was pure ecstasy as well. And the sad thing is so many thought their lyrics were just a nod to junkies and that "lifestyle" as if people set out to become junkies in the first place. The genius of their lyrics was that it was, if anything, the best anti drug campaign you could ever put together if you chose to actually LISTEN and read between the lines. They all said, many times, they didn't want people to do crack and shoot heroin because they wrote about it. The most surreal aspect to their music is it really summed up Layne's struggles. It's like a road map to his entire adult life, all the way up to his death. The personal connection to the notes is striking. So often the brightest stars are the most conflicted. They often face demons that the public either doesn't see or ignores because of stigma. Rock stars like Kurt and Layne to a lesser degree (national level) were, in a way, looked at as Gods. And God(s) are written as flawless.

More than anything, his spirit was gone. This had to be so heartbreaking for the band to helplessly watch. If this story doesn't touch your heart then you're not human. Nobody chooses this to happen. It all boils down to sadness, defeat, trauma, loneliness and anything else that sometimes is just too hard to deal with for 5:48 some reason or another. Internally, it's pure agony. Addiction sux😢

What he is doing with his voice in relation to the guitar chords is unbelievable...not only extremely difficult, but genius.

This is true, honestly very true. The vocal runs he’s doing are very odd [in a great way!] and very difficult. It’s like he’s making complex chords using the guitar chord as the root and then his voice adds all the exotic notes that aren’t even within that original chord. NOT typical rock roll vocals at all.

@@Name-el9ps i cant grasp how he can sing so insanely good in his state here. Like it is nothing, to reach all those high notes. HOW?

You can clearly see that Layne is "high" and it looks as though he may also be missing some teeth, I know that's from long-term heroin abuse, despite all that...he still sounds like money!! What a bad-ass!

That’s all real sound folks, no auto tune here. And just blows me away that he was high as fk in this video and could still belt out vocals like that. I still remember when the Album Dirt came out. I was in my early 20’s, great band, great loss.

I'm envious of people who were old enough to experience life with him alive. I was maybe four or five when he died, man what I'd give to have a time machine and watch my favorite bands playing, and meet the musicians who are no longer with us. One of my other favorite vocalists died of suicide in '91 and he was only 22, I wonder what he'd be like if he was still around today. I could ramble on this subject at length.

Honestly that mistake was a blessing in disguise cause he was sounding kind of faded in the beginning. On the second go around he sang with more energy for real.

My exact point!!! He was so embarrassed and Cantrell had his back, joked with the crowd, and he made it ok 💜

Alice in Chains, metal fans want it called metal, rock fans want it labled rock, grunge fans want it labled grunge. probably the only band loved by rock and metal fans equally. what a band

definitely crossover you cannot compare facelift to jar of flies two completely different formats is been a while since I heard but I believe grunge was more of an "aesthetic" while rock and metal are pretty similar styles with metal having a more amphetamine quality whereas rock is like a good bourbon
