I was there. Front and center. At the start of the Jar of Flies teaser (the album had yet to drop in the Netherlands) I could see him walk on stage from a crack in the curtain. He was holding a bottle of Jack Daniels which by the time they started Angry Chair was virtually gone. He kept messing up during the song as well as in Hate to Feel. That caused him to destroy his guitar and his anger was palpable througout the show. At that time alcohol was not sold in the stadium, just soft drinks which sucked, especially because there was a huge stack of Budweiser cans in front of Sean's drums which everyone eyeballed. I'm not sure when but at some point a girl behind me asked to stand in front of me because she was getting squashed and was having trouble breathing. I let her infront of me and used my arms to push off against the barricade to create a little bubble for her. During Dam that River at the 40:00 mark, Layne jumped off stage for a crowd surf but somehow got hit in the nuts which angered him even further. He proceeded to pick up a can of Bud, took a sip then pelted it into the audience. I remember it as if it was yesterday: I could see the can coming towards me with lightning speed, too fast to react. Before I was able to put my hands in front of my face to shield it, the can had hit the girl standing in front of me in the forehead. The can bounced of her head and as she collapsed I managed to grab the can stuffing it in my jacket. I helped the security get the girl over the barricade and resumed my position in front. I reached in my pocket to find the can half full still. I drank half and gave the other half to my brother who was with me. Me, him and the band were the only other ones with our hands on a drink that evening. Suffices to say, had the girl not tapped me on the shoulder, my evening would have taken a different turn. There was an article about it in a Dutch music magazine afterwards. The girl never filed charges. The can with the dent from her head sits on my bookshelf to this day next to my AIC cd's. Thought you all might like this little anecdote.

Whatever drug Layne did before getting on stage allowed him to feel very comfortable up there. He's singing completely different then his usual style. The way he is yelling and expressing the songs coulda been a whole new hit in maybe a different genre if it was planned out. I'm so glad I got to see and hear this different style coming out of him. He's definitely high on ecstasy or something else similar. Its definitely not just his heroin habit making him act like that. He's like rollin or something. Some of you so called fans need to be a little more open minded when saying he did a terrible job. If the songs sound different then usual, that doesn't mean he did a bad job up there. He's just in a completely different zone expressing songs exactly how he feels at the moment. This is one of my favorite shows that I've seen on here now.

During the Facelift recording sessions Layne sang Bleed the Freak as a Jazz number and Love Hate Love is this whacked out slow-dubbed thing. LOL If Layne wants to sing while high on Ecstasy that was fine (I think Jerry took the same thing Layne did for this concert.) Layne Staley's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer (including Chris Cornell) in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals. As much as I think Layne sang better than Chris Cornell. Chris Cornell said that Layne sang like an angry angel. Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.

Legit the best setlist they've ever played at this point. Nutshell, A Little Bitter, Dirt, Hate to Feel, Sickman, What the Hell Have I and Rotten Apple. The show must go on! I would think that’s still true today for most acts? AIC puts on a solid show. Some bands can go on after the original lead singer leaves. They have everyone else, so they have no problem performing. Similar to Static-X without Wayne and apparently Linkin Park without Chester is coming again with new music and obvious tour, continuation of LP career. It’s all over the place. Killswitch, Dance Gavin Dance, Northlane, Underoath, Slaves, and bigger acts like Slipknot, Blink-182. It’s everywhere.

Add some really good drugs and a relapse and you get this tornado of energy that needs to be released. For an artist sometimes the most creative thing you can do and a masterpiece unfolds. Demri Parrott was his whatcha you call I guess not really his ‘rock’ but more like his whole solid foundation that his life had pretty much built & rested upon. Espcly since she too was also an addict to heroin. Even though it doesnt really sound too good to most when saying it since the consequences ended up becoming what they were in that situation, it was great for him during that time w/her being just like him. Not only was it someone that he was finally able to find true love with but his comfort level also finally became relaxing. Thats b’cos she was someone that wouldnt pass judgment on him, making him feel guilty for the nasty habit(s) that he sadly chose to keep doing more n more of thruout the yrs. What hurts more than anything to diehard fans such as myself is that once she died from bacterial infection she reportedly gained from one or more needles she had used supposedly from time to time... it hurts that (according to those closest to him who had only seen him maybe at the most once or twice within the yrs that followed her passing) that he was making it known w/out even saying anything of that direction that his time was coming to a close & nothing was going to stop it from happening. Isolating himself in his upper floor condo/apt. or whatever, refusing to answer intercom/buzzer to just about every1 but his dealer for months & months on end. Staying high non-friggin’ stop doing nothing but playing video games day in/day out. This was at least according to the few or so ones who were actually lucky enough to visit & talk w/him briefly within those last few yrs of his life. In the end, its just that 1 cant help but to wonder what other great material did we all miss out on had he not had to go n live thru these such dark times of his shortened life. Watching this makes me incredibly sad. I don't know how any hardcore AIC fan can think this is a good concert. You should be well aware of what Layne is capable of. Yes, even at his worst his vocals were always more than decent but his bizarre behavior overshadows his talent here. The obvious fact that he is higher than a kite, looks like he wants to come out of his own skin, and acting like someone who has an epic case of ADD is disturbing. He doesn't even look like he is enjoying himself. I know at this point he was already a long time addict, but watching this I see the end. At the age of 26. RIP Layne.
@kevincoady52486 жыл бұрын
Alaina Juniper it is really hard to believe the difference from 92-93, dirt was out in 92, so he was already that whole album into his addiction, but shows in Oakland and Hollywood late 92 are mind bending, perfect, even early 93 in Brazil when Kurt Cobain was a disaster n Mike Starr almost died, Layne was amazing. This is aweful, his antics r bizarre and vocals r a mess, for him, which is still amazing, but.....

The most heartbreaking thing here is how visually ill he is. Heroin had got him. He really didn't stand a chance. R.I.P Layne ❤
@kevincoady52486 жыл бұрын
Steph Tofil I’m not sure he is feeling dope sick, more like mixed meth w Heroin, her initial comment about ADD is pretty accurate. I am not sure if the exact date, but this has to be one of the last shows on European tour after Lallapalooza 93. Understandably the band had probably seen about enough of their good friend behaving badly. A lot of people give JC shit, which is absolutely foolishness iMO, yes they all had issues, but addiction to Opiates is a special kind of hell on the addict and equally so on those who care. More forbidding than songs written by Layne is the quote he made after Kurt Cobain died, talked about how he became a shell of himself and could hardly get out a hello. Heroin steals souls....even the Great 1’s
@stephtofil6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Coady totally get what you're saying. It just heartbreaking seeing him like that. Spent the video wishing someone would run on stage, give him a hug and look after him. Bless him ❤
@kevincoady52486 жыл бұрын
Steph Tofil I completely agree, the promise of hoping things will get better usually lasts longer than it should. Guess it took something like this for everyone to say enough, but he didn’t take to the hugs I guess. Have to believe people tried, because the thought of anyone leaving this world the way he did if he truly wanted to live is agonizing.
@bradpity Жыл бұрын
8:53 thru 9:10… heartbreaking to see him that way, I feel like I can feel his inner child screaming out for help. This show was legit therapy for him, but I wish someone who understood his trauma could have helped guide him to safety instead of continually pushing him to bleed all over everybody. Thankful the fans made this a safe environment for him that night, but he didn’t deserve to suffer up there like that, as if he were some circus monkey… :(

Cuz he's acting weird here. Saying that he hates Europe despite the most of fans are European. Not sure if he's joking or high af. Actually he seems to be a nice guy as far as I've seen in interviews. but seeing him being dick in the concerts hurts me a lot. (Maybe his real personality is shown idk) I feel like he's just being fake af in the interviews. Anyways still love him no matter what. :/
@AllisonChains644 жыл бұрын
@@kaori_kanzaki He was never fake, it's just that he's high as fuck here. I'm not exactly sure on what, but more than likely it was heroin. You can tell because of the slurring and that peculiar behavior. He was absolutely phenomenal and I don't care how fucked up he is here, he'll always be no less than a rock God and a beautiful person. @tamibrandt3 жыл бұрын
@@AllisonChains64 It's like none of the people in the comments area of this video even realize what Layne was going through. Layne was the sweetest person you'd ever meet in real life. He never talked bad about anyone, for instance if two people from different camps were ragging on each other, he never said a bad word about either party. Jerry said when he was alert and present, he was the greatest guy. The beginning of this tour started in Salem, Oregon (after they got back from their first European tour where he and Mark Lanegan were high most of the time). When they got back to the States for the Salem Armory Auditorium, it was his first time trying to kick drugs cold turkey. (The second cold turkey stint being in 1994 around the time he was working on Mad Season). Then he agreed to do Lollapalooza and Susan Silver assigned him a personal chaperone. That was like putting a bodyguard between an alcoholic and a liquor cabinet. What the fuck do you think he's going to do? Personal Chaperone/bodyguard ... try to ditch him and look for drugs. I've seen just about every live performance I can find on Layne so far between 1986-1993 and I learned to tell between Layne sober, Layne drunk and Layne high by now. Once he got to the Australia dates in the last part of October - Early November 1993... the itinerary was four or five shows in a row in different cities, which presented a logistical challenge. Australian shows end at one o’clock in the morning. Lobby call to leave for the next city was at 6:00 A.M. After three or four shows, Layne was exhausted, and fatigue was beginning to affect his voice. The tour manager insisted the show had to go on. According to Randy Biro, “Kevan Wilkins, the road manager, he sat there and he guilted Layne. I think that’s when Layne's hatred for Wilkins really kicked in, and he’d guilt him. I actually sat there and listened to him say, ‘You’ve got to play the show. Think of all the kids that went out and bought tickets just to see you. Are you gonna deny them that?’” So between the damn road manager knowing how to guilt-trip the fuck out of Layne and on top of that Susan Silver knowing how to guilt-trip the fuck out of Layne over finishing Tripod (among other things) versus trying rehab a fourteenth time, because according to one of Susan's guilt-trips "Layne WAS Alice In Chains, HE HAD to do the album, rehab would have to wait. When John Bonham died, that was the end of Led Zeppelin. Whenever they did get together, they used his son Jason Bonham to fill in on drums for his dad. But for the most part, Zeppelin ended with John Bonham's death. But, Susan's guilt-trip of Layne IS Alice In Chains, I think Jerry Cantrell would beg to differ on that point. Personally, I think Jerry should have renamed the band if he was going to get a new singer. Because William does NOT have the power in his voice to sing Layne's songs. He hasn't gone through the experiences those songs are based on. But that's me. (and oddly a shorter paragraph or book-long post on the No Layne/No Chains argument than I'm used to.)
