Conversely, if he WERE here today, I can almost guarantee you they would NOT be as popular today. Why? Because people don't appreciate what they have. AIC has become a legend over the last 25-30 years because of everything surrounding Layne's death, much like Jim, Janis, Jimi, Curt, Chris, et al. One never appreciates the living until they're gone.

Video recording in those days was not as easy as kicking on your phone. You could buy vhs camcorders but they sucked ass and wouldn’t sound good. I doubt AIC ever paid a full film crew unless they planned to sell a videotape, and back then they were grundgy dudes playing to pay rent.

You can tell how close he was to blowing out his voice on Man in the Box. He seemed disappointed that he couldn't get all the way up for the choruses; putting that song at the end of the set was psychopathic but Layne made it work even with reduced range from the past hour of aggressive singing.
@matthewjdouglas6471

Jerry's without a shadow of doubt the best support for layne. He was always pumping him up and reassuring him he was doing a Stella performance. Layne obviously had insecurities and Jerry made him not feel them as much by being there to lean on. The whole band are quality. Mike inez was heavy bassist and Sean was a kickass drummer. Mike Starr too was great. He wrote all the early bass lines.
@9sarat
@9sarat 2 жыл бұрын
Agree and love watching Jerry support Layne! I don't feel like he was insecure, so much, but that he just puts out so much energy that he needed Jerry's support, like the wind behind his wings.
@Zakksback17
@Zakksback17 2 жыл бұрын
If you watch early Layne stuff ( 1991 and before) he was very confident on stage. Only when his addiction got worse that he became what seems to be insecure and wouldn't move much on stage. Perhaps it was just pain and weakness. Years of daily drug use would cause your liver and kidneys to be messed up resulting in an inability to properly metabolize any nutrient, hormone or clear and detox the substances he was using from his body among other things. I can't imagine drugs you buy off the streets would be pharma grade, who knows what else is in there. His voice never changed though, quite amazing.
@9sarat
@9sarat 2 жыл бұрын
@@Zakksback17 the great Mark Lanegan seldom moved on stage. Layne became more like him after a few years and would just plant himself in front of the microphone and belt it out. It probably did have to do with his physical strength at this point. His voice was still amazing though, for sure. It makes me sad that his legacy is so tied up with his habits . . . it's not what he wanted. Most people don't mention Kurt and think of his heroin use . . . they do think of his suicide, but Kurt was also using heroin steadily,. Layne's public memorial is dedicated to helping opiate addicts and isn't about his work. AIC hasn't made it into the R&R hall of fame although Nirvana and Cornell are. It's just ridic.
@Zakksback17
@Zakksback17 2 жыл бұрын
@@9sarat Agreed. I guess In Kurt's case he wasn't around long after he got famous, Therefore people only knew he used heroin for maybe, 3 years? Because of his suicide at the peak of his career he became a legend and, in a way, no longer a human being with flaws. AIC's music is also a lot darker and a lot of the songs are about their drug use and struggles. Nirvana's songs are "catchier" with lyrics that even in the words of Kurt himself, don't have much meaning. The reason I believe his legacy is so tied up with his drug use is because of how tragic it all was, a few of his friends and obviously Demri passed away in the same way. Sounds like Seattle had a huge heroin/drugs problem in the early 90s.

Its awesome that this footage is still out there. I was fortunate enough to have seen them twice in 1993. I had a feeling even then that we would lose Layne early. The brightest flames burn out the quickest. My favorite band of all time. Thanks for posting this and letting me relive those amazing moments.

@@Adrian101882 shows how good his voice was though to go through an hour plus set and have such a difficult song to sing as the last song. However he normally nails it I think the last couple of gigs in 1996 he changed the key on man in the box because he couldn’t reach the notes but at that point had deteriorated quite bad but still nailed it just in a different way. Check out Glasgow 1993 it’s the best you will hear him live smashes every single song to perfection.

Best footage over all ever seen thanks for this. As strange as it seems this old rock musician really gotten into AIC. The Rooster and Man in the box always caught my ear. Air play Classic Rock actually just recently hit studio doing both songs for local rock demo for practice battle of bands coming up. At 65 years old going too burn place up with 2 songs by AIC. Layne won't be forgotten anytime soon RIP brother were still rocking ya!!💪🎸🎙

Pitch correction, chorus, voice doubling, it's ALWAYS been a thing. To act like autotune came along and ruined music just shows how little effort you put into finding new music, and how quick you are to dismiss it for something you don't even understand.
@vosoryan
@vosoryan 5 ай бұрын
@DudeMcGuybro chill tf out. He never said anything about pitch correction, chorus, or doubling. He said AUTOTUNE wasn't a thing. And he obviously meant autotune during live shows. They had to actually be perfectly precise when performing. It didn't ruin music but it's a little annoying to always hear it during live shows now
@DudeMcGuybro
@DudeMcGuybro 5 ай бұрын
@@vosoryan You can't use autotune during a live show. Show me one example. You can't. You can show me examples of intentionally vocoding a voice for the effect, but simply put, autotune during a live show doesn't happen.
@vosoryan
@vosoryan 5 ай бұрын
@DudeMcGuybro You're just plain wrong. You realize that autotune is an effect just like reverb and delay right? Are you saying it's impossible to add any vocal effects to live shows? Listen to literally any modern singer. Post malone if you need an example. Even linkin park. Chester bennington used slight autotune later in his career. You're living in a fantasy world of you think there's no autotune ever being used in live shows
@DudeMcGuybro
@DudeMcGuybro 5 ай бұрын
@@vosoryan Live autotune would sound like T-pain you goofball. I never once said you can't add live effects like reverb or delay, but you can't modulate a voice with something like autotune without it being VERY noticeable. They use pitch doubling with a backing track, or Jerry is underneath singing all of the other parts. No live band uses autotune. I have done live sound for 20 years, never once seen a band use autotune. Quit being an idiot about shit you don't know. If you don't know something, that's fine, quit acting like an expert. The experts in the room right now, to tell you you're an idiot.
