Going to Paris for 6 weeks almost 30 years ago changed my life--seeing how my friends' mothers dressed (they were all over 50) was transformative. Now that I'm in my 50s, I still think about those women & let them inspire me every single day. This video is a great update to those memories! I'll be watching again and again. Thank you for taking the time to make such a wonderful video.

I have so needed this video. Thank you Alice! I am 61, let myself become overweight, have some major stressors in my life, and have allowed myself to become the frumpy, matronly, unhappy person who looks as bad as I feel. The fashion choices available to me with my budget, and my location, make it difficult for me to select nice pieces. I tried to find outfits to wear for my vacation, and ended up finding my favorite pieces at a thrift store in Naples, FL. A Karl Lagerfeld dress, Calvin Klein dress, Michael Kors pants, etc. for a fraction of new. Starting over has been hard, but rewarding, and the confidence to go on is increasing with each bit of advice I took from this video.

Thank you so much for this video. I feel so frustrated sometimes as a North American woman over 50. Fashion here can feel unwelcoming to women over a certain age - like we should be happy disappearing into the background in leggings, oversized tshirts and crocs or droopy tent dresses. You've shown that there's no need to give up on fashion and looking one's best. I loved what you said about it being about self-respect. I'll remember that the next time someone gives me side-eye for wearing a belt & blazer with my jeans and/or accessories I've actually thought about! 😂😂

Wonderful video! I think your points #4 & #5 were the most important. I get the sense that Parisian women don’t freak out about aging. It looks like they adopt a lifestyle of taking care of themselves; eating well, staying active, taking care of their skin, etc., and they embrace aging as a part of life. Also one’s attitude is key. Feeling confident and feeling good about one’s self is always attractive. I think I will buy one of the books you recommend and read more about Parisian style.

Seems like I have been Parisian chic my whole adult life as this is the way I have dressed most of the time😂. Always drawn to Classic, elegant yet simple. I totally agree with your point on self respect. I mostly dress for me, but its’s nice if other people also like what I wear. Last year I got very sick and nearly died. I lost most of my hair along with 20 kg very fast (I was already thin!) and I looked awful. It was so very tempting to give up and go into hiding. In stead I made a point of dressing up as usual for all the Doctor’s appointment and treatments that followed. I didn’t have to but I’m glad I did; that way I managed to keep my self respect along with a long and hard healing prosess. When I look back at the previous year I even think it saved me in many ways. So yes, I agree with not letting yourself go. New subscriber here🤗🇳🇴.

J'adore cette vidéo, Alice. Loved how all style principles were explained throughly. We've been several times in France to visit family members and always enjoyed to see how French women dress for every ocassion regardless their age. My lovely mother in law who's in shape has strong French ancestry does the same. I'm 46 and always been slim, self conscious of health and well-being also following these style principles being mistaken as a French in several ocassions which is a compliment. So glad to see beautiful Inès de La Fressange, Caroline de Maigret and actress Sophie Marceau among others featured in this video, this is a wonderful example that mature women can look fabulous when they are in good shape, naturally beautiful, well put together and chic. As a former model I'd like to remind all ladies that a good posture is essential. Take good care of yourself and enjoy your chic with self-confidence. Merci beaucoup pour votre conseil formidable. Vous êtes très chic comme toujours. Love from the UK 🇬🇧🤍🇨🇵

Some great examples of looking chic over 50! Too many stripes for my personal taste, but I agree that looking good can be achieved with style and not excessive facial fillers!
@ellenolenska91418 ай бұрын
I think it's easier to look chic over 50 if you're thin and have a good haircut. It also helps if you have good bone structure in your face. Ines de La Fressange and Carla Bruni are tall and thin. They were models. Emmanuel Macron's wife, Brigitte, is very toned and in shape. When Donald Trump first met the Macrons, he commented on what great shape she was in. Isabelle Huppert, the actress, is my idol. She is fairly short (I'm 5'4"), thin, over 70, and very, very chic. Isabelle doesn't wear a lot of makeup and she always looks good. Catherine Deneuve, probably one of the most naturally beautiful women ever, is not really thin, but still very stylish and she carries herself so confidently. I believe she has had a facelift, but she doesn't look weird. Neither does Jane Fonda. But they could afford to have the best surgeons work on them.

Carla Bruno gained a lot of weight during menopause and had to lost it she talked about it. Over 50 taking care of yourself is a lot of work and dedication rather than spend "money". Exactly like affording high quality foods. Yes it costs but not that much you would think and it is more about the effort you put in and not a lot of people are willing to do it
@ellenolenska91418 ай бұрын
@@Aliceinparisofficial Yes, metabolism slows down and weight becomes redistributed after menopause. And, you lose muscle as you get older. You just can't eat as much as you once did without getting fat. You didn't mention the importance of a good haircut, but I think that is very important. Sometimes good hairdressers cost a lot. You have an excellent haircut and very nice hair. Very flattering. And the color is great.

Here in North America a huge amount of older women go for plastic surgery - and they lose the persona that they have had for decades. It is so sad to see. Our plastic surgeons don’t have the skills to recreate the look of youth, but few seem to understand this. And then, so many older women are dying to look wealthy, whether they are or not. Over and over again, as I see it, the difference comes down to urban vs rural/city vs country. In the bigger US cities, women dress more like Parisians do, perhaps not with French- or Italian-made pieces, which I do think are chic and well made. Los Angeles and Miami seem to favor flashier, edgier clothes for all ages, while NY and Chicago are quieter and more conservative. The rest comes down to individual good or bad taste. Too many logos, silly prints and lurid colors, too much cheap jewelry are just poor taste and style, imho.

Where you live and do your daily life really dictates my life. For a time we lived in rural MN doing kids, school bus stops and mowing lawns or shuffling snow. Other times the remote village in the mountains, its means, explore the woods, sweatshirts. Arizona was a Sweet and hot. I think it is so much easier to be simple elegant in warmer living conditions. I’m up in rain country now and my age I am always not. I would live a day in a sweater or blazer before I ended up ripping it off in overheating. I do love this channel, I just found it. I love a chic elegant look but I also love a good loose flower dress that begs to be swirled around.

@@NorahLacey I think you want Alice or others to respond to this, but since you put it after my comment, I will tell you my opinion. I think Mme. Macron dresses beautifully. I love this video (and all of your videos - I found you through your perfume reviews). Could you name the ladies that you feature in the video and give their instagram/your tube channels? They are very inspiring and I would like to check out their content. Thanks!

The vast majority of the elegance is being slim. Though Parisienne women are not obsessed with thinness as you see in LA and NYC, they are rarely overweight and almost never obese. The US, even the big cities, ppl are just so much more overweight. Even the UES last time I was in NYC, was shocking. More than half the women were overweight and if we are honest, looking elegant is nearly impossible because you have to adapt the elan of Paris for the body shape. The Breton is parfait but you can’t wear it well if you are an apple shape. 😢My time in Paris as a grad student was the single biggest influence on my style of anything in my life. But NYC was influential back then too, as was London. Not any more. .

To translate, UES = Upper East Side, a wealthy enclave of Manhattan.

It's sad that you use an older woman that is a little heavier weight to show the bad outdated look. I know there are women that look fabulous and modern that have white hair and that are not skinny in paris. I wish you would show more of those as well

Alice I love your channel. I’m about to turn sixty and have a youthful modern style like the French (I’m Australian). What would you suggest as a winter evening outfit for my party? I’m thinking a velvet dress? Thank you. ❤

yes or silk slip dress with a leather jacket or velvet blazer. Forget to mention jumpsuit (loose fit or large) check Tara jarmon or sandro they make beautiful evening jumpsuit on my wishlist
