I watch a lot of videos on this topic because I travel alone so much, and this one is really great! I’m so glad you mentioned the fact that people are more likely to be targeted if they have logos. The wealthiest people I know do not wear obvious logos and definitely wear things with understated elegance, and that’s in Europe and the US and Canada. They do not want people to know they have money, and they’re never targeted. Brilliant advice, Alice! Thank you.

Even at age 14, my parents had me dressing in pant suits, nice shoes and a camel wool coat while I was in Paris and Versailles during winter. Nowadays, my backpack (with zipper locks) is used strictly as a carry-on while flying to my destination. After that, it stays in the hotel room until it's time to fly home. While wandering the city, a tiny cross-body purse can hold essentials without screaming "tourist!" I love the non-flashy, chic and elegant style of French women.

I live in the US, in New England, and I don’t dress like the average American. My style is classic, understated elegance. I was brought up to dress this way as a sign of respect for oneself and others. I had no idea at the time that my mother was teaching me was to dress à la Parisienne. Not all Americans dress in athletic wear as daily clothing. I grew up in Boston, in an urban environment, and that greatly affected our choice of clothing. I moved to a bordering state, and the people here dress much more casually, as a rule. People always say that I look so nice. and I wonder why they don’t put forth the effort into making themselves look their best.

Really all of Alice's advice is good for the US too. Looking elegant is always appropriate, no matter where you are. I'm an American and I think most Americans would see Alice here and admire her look and style. I keep hoping the gym clothes/baseball cap look will fade here.

@@1marianne I dont undestand why the classic style must to be pushed down the other. They are equal. Self expressing. The world would be very boring if we uniformizated only with classic fashion. Since I was a little girl, my coaches and even my parents would advice us kids, to wear comforatble, classic pieces; in fact, we were encouraged to go clothes shoping with the adults and see what they chose and we'd imitate something similar from the children's section. From clothing, to shoes, to minimal jewelry (girls), electronics (boys), perfumes to even which bag each group should wear without getting any attention. The boys hated men's fragance, so they chose a non-gender neutral body wash for everyday. Each group had and still has their own Go-Go-Bag, in other words, one suitcase, one tote bag with zipper, no more, no less than what you can carry. This is useful espcially if parents wish to travel with their childen and they get agitated having to carry heavy stuff. Now a days there are mini inflatable pillows, mini foldable blankets, something to use on the plane or off the plane. There are minimal ways to hide your credit cards and cash if you dont want to carry a million things while traveling through the busy airport or the streets of country you are visiting. It's a matter of looking up those minimal items online.

I like a leather small to medium shoulder bag, I don’t really like wearing cross-bodies because they cross my neck, irritating the skin. It’s getting harder and harder to find good shoulder bags, they’re nearly all cross-body these days. I think a handheld bag could be very easily pulled away by a stronger person, plus I like being hands-free.
@edennis85789 ай бұрын
Well, as she pointed out, it depends on whether you want to get robbed or not. Hey, it's your choice. If you wear a hand-held bag, the thing is to carry it in front of you, not at the side. Thieves tend to run up from behind; it's hard for them to grab something that they can't see. For myself, when I'm walking around, I don't carry anything more than I absolutely need, so a wrist bag or a small clutch is enough. Carry it in front of you. I don't attract thieves; maybe they think a small bag isn't worth stealing.

sorry I'm from nyc and everyone uses backpacks and totes for School, work, to carry stuff that doesn't fit in a cross body like an umbrella. no one is wearing New balance or converse because they are cheap looking. Also no one is wearing white sneakers because they will get dirty and who is wearing that when it's raining all the time in Pari? lol that's silly. I don’t wear these things at home in the US, either! I especially hate the black or gray tight, polyester gym outfits that everyone wears everywhere, it’s almost a national uniform. Most people never go to gyms or even go on walks, anyway. There’s nothing comfortable at all about all that super-tight and sweaty poly and spandex. If I had to wear those, I would never get dressed at all! I much prefer tailored clothes in natural fibers and lighter colors, mostly. I would never wear a cliche’ beret in Paris, either, but especially in warm weather. I used to wear wool berets for my daily winter commute, because I don’t like sock hats with my corporate wool overcoats, but the Monica Lewinsky scandal ruined them for me. Even though I wore them for years before, everyone started saying things like “trying to catch a president?” No thanks! Parisian fashion has always been my inspiration since working with two beautiful Parisienne colleagues forty years ago, they always looked so great.

I don't wear pajamas outside anywhere, athletic wear unless I'm working out, CROCS or flipflops (they're so bad for your feet), crop tops, sweats, hoodies, or advertisements. You can dress casual and still be stylish. And for goodness sake, smile and greet people. Thank you for an informative video ❤ I wonder how you would recommend carrying a water bottle, snacks, camera and umbrella if you are advising against a backpack. A large tote style bag containing these items would result in back pain at the end of a touring day. There are some very chic back packs 🤔 Also, when I travel I want versatile easily packable items - a trench coat and Panama style hat wouldn’t tick these boxes for me. However, I do get the point that you are trying to make for travellers to Paris. 😊

Hi, I'm going June 11 to the 21st. What should I wear? I'm from southern CA. I live in the desert and it's currently already going to hit the 100 F here. How is the weather over there? (I usually get cold around 70F). I'm going to look odd either way, but I was wondering if you could give me more info. I've never traveled anywhere, so I don't know what to expect 😅.

Bonjour Alice, this is a great video, funny and mostly accurate. However, may I please just point out that there are Americans who know how to dress elegantly (whether here in America or abroad)? Unless you speak with us, you will not know that we are American, I suppose... 😂 For those people that are wondering why this doesn't go both ways (Europeans dressing like Americans when in USA) - consider that the concept is about dressing with class and respect, period. If Europeans were notorious for dressing frumpy or in garments that are too revealing, then its probably fair to assume that the advice would be going in the other direction.

I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. No one ever guesses I’m American unless I speak to them. If I’m with my children, friends, or sisters, we don’t speak loudly enough for them to hear. My mother taught me this, and I’ve taught my children as well. Elegant but simple clothing is accepted everywhere, and it certainly doesn’t have to be expensive. This is a great video for those who don’t know this yet.

Great video! What kind of bag should a man wear when in Paris and not look like a tourist? I usually carry guide books with me. Thanks.

When travelling in Europe I have always gone with a group. We may not stay too long in any one place so we have to travel really light. That means I have to carry quite a bit of stuff with me. I must have a bag that is big enough for it all and that has a sturdy enough strap that someone won’t cut through it. (Those things happen.) Also I have noticed that lots of people in Germany and Scandinavia wear very casual clothes so Paris is not all Europe.

Being vigilant against theft or respecting cultural norms are both fine however, most people traveling across the world are not taking their entire wardrobe with them. Bringing a trenchcoat or multiple pairs of shoes isn’t an option for many people. No matter how I dress, I will be picked out as an American anyway. Trying to minimize this is fine, trying to become a Parisian for two weeks is silly

I will never understand how Americans can go to Europe, wearing a backpack, in any European country 🤦🏻♀️ watch a KZbin video maybe two, before traveling overseas.

Wear whatever you are comfortable in, paying attention to sacred places/museums/galleries. Those places require "decent" look. What tourists should pay more attention to, more than their clothes, is their behavior. Don't be laud, rude, don't throw trash anywhere else but into a trash bin. My husband and I have visited 40 countries (many of them visited more than once) and never blended, however, we never grabbed attention . Of course we wore sneakers, of course there was a medium size of a backpack included, since we were walking from 20-30 km per day. We were standing in long lines (very often 2-3h) to enter museums and then walking there from 2-4h. My feet would not bear any kind of shoes apart from sneakers. When we visited notorious places full of pickpocketing, we dressed like poor people. Yes, you are not representable in photos, but safety was our top priority. We travel for ourselves, not to show it to the rest of the world. What we noticed is that the beggars were skipping us- we were not a target.

I am luxury shopping for the first time in Paris. I planned to bring my Celine classic box bag (Philo era). Do you think it’s too loud for Paris or should I just stick with my plain, anti-theft cross body? I kind of felt like I wanted the SAs to know I could actually afford what I was shopping for. 😂

Take a picture of it before you leave home so customs don't think you bought it in France. Your photo from your phone will have a date stamp to prove you had it before your trip.

How about a video on how to be a good tourist instead of what NOT to do? I’m not trying to be Parisian. I’m trying to be polite in the country that’s hosting me. If we all stop being so judgy, we could all enjoy ourselves a little more. Let’s all DO better!

I would like to see videos about where to shop for vintage handbags, clothes, and shoes in Paris or in France. I live in the Netherlands and want to attend a cooking course in Paris and shop at the brocantes in Paris while I am there. Merci for the great videos!

Cotton and linens for clothing. If its warm rayon or other warm fabrics. Boots or non-logo sneakers or slip-on shoes, depending on where you are going and the weather. Minimal jewelry, and go for small wristlet wallet or ask an attelier in your city to make pockets underneath your sweater or coat. Most people don't even wear in-pockets in the US but in other countries, yes. If you have your arms across or standing, no one will see the hidden pockets for key-cards, credit card, ID card, and cash. Practice at home how to leave it on and take it off without unfolding it. This will become useful when you have to sit some where and once fold it, it'll be on your lap not on the chair; where the pickpockets will see it. If you are going to wear a hat, sunglasses or an umbrella buy a cheap one. In case some one does steal the piece from you, they are only worth $5 or $10 dollars. Most importantly feel comfortable and free to walk around without much worries. And don't forget about a light parfum (w) or cologne (m). And sunscreen, please keep safe from the sunrays. 😉

I love your videos! So glad I subscribed, Alice. I seriously hate those crocs, slippers and flip-flops. My friend Ismar and his brother went back to his country to visit their sick grandmother. On their way to the temple, once inside they found three people wearing those logs in a cherished, holy space. They called over security and they people were removed from the premises. The angry tourists yelled at the guards The why? They replied "It is a holy temple where our people come to pray and chant. It's not a silly room or the circus. Please go visit another location" Their outfits sceamed "Look at me! Come rob me pleaseee" 😬................. Please, everyone keep safe. And don't foget to bring along a sunscreen in the summer.

I need some advice - I almost always wear a hat outside for 2 reasons - sunlight can be a headache trigger for me and I have very fine thin hair that is easily blown around. Currently I can only grow it to a little below my chin, so it doesn’t look that great pulled back. I have some cute hats but then when we go inside to eat or a museum I would prefer to take the hat off but then my hair looks horrible. Tips?
