I think the biggest issue is influencers declaring a trend “outdated” and people blindly following. If you bought something, and you still love it, who cares what people whose livelihood depends on trends say.

Saying that ”you don’t buy a Birkin, you earn one” is unfortunately buying right into Hermes marketing strategy. It is JUST a bag people!

If you are not familiar with Collectors world I understand that it is only a bag, which not... The rush doesn't come from finally getting the bag but from the journey the exclusivity , process, the waiting, the right contact, the right sales ambassador, the chace, the rejection, the trying building a portfolio to get in, that's the adrenaline... The whole entourage that goes with it.. The bag it's only the byproduct... I used to work in the business, with collectors, high-profile people... I am talking from the source...

@@itziarblanco9599Many people are brainwashed into thinking that man made luxury items are highly rare and collectible. Wake up! This is just a trend like tattoos and drugs. Cost a lot of money for something that is easily reproduced or manufactured in great quantities if these companies so desired. Old money doesn't indulge in luxury goods anymore. Save your money to buy real estate or long term investment. Your success is better measured by your bank balance not your wardrobe. Show me your bank statement not your shopping invoices

@itziarblanco9599 but at the end of the day, you're still just paying money to get to take the bag home so you are, in essence, "buying a Hermés bag"

I think each person should understand their own style and buy what they like. This way you are not following trends and being true to yourself. I really wanted a Chanel bag because I just wanted one. So I bought one at a Chanel boutique in Paris and took a photo with my Chanel shopping bag in front of Coco Chanel’s staircase. This in itself was the full experience that gives me joy. I love my Chanel bag and it is a classic bag. If it makes you happy, go for it!

I really appreciated your honesty at the end and I love the line “you don’t buy a Birkin, you earn a Birkin.” Too true. I wore my H belt cinched around a bulky Marant coat a few weeks ago and it looked great! 😂 I do not wear them otherwise…Lagerfeld famously said, “trendy is the last stage before tacky” and I couldn’t agree more. Fantastic video, Alice, merçi! When I changed my mindset to “Do I want to make this company rich or do I want to make me rich?”, my spending habits changed dramatically. I have a spending plan which includes needs, wants, dreams, and goals. I still buy the rare luxury item, but I am very discerning & selective , and will save for it/earn it, if I want it that much . Keep going with your great videos, Alice. I appreciate them. ❤

I enjoy your vlogs. Variety is the spice of life. As for the Gucci Marmont belt, I have that belt and have no problems with it. A couple years ago, I found two on resale and bought them which works fine with how I style some of my outfits. Plus, I'm one who basically buys what I like anyhow and am not attached to only current trends. I have been the same way during all of the decades of traveling to Europe regularly, Paris included a few dozen times, since the 1970s when I was in my early 20s. Back in the day, I remember wearing styles that I was told that folks don't wear in Paris, but then fast forward about a decade later and Parisians were wearing them. One needs to find one's own personal style and not get so influenced as to what to wear and what not to wear or else one will start looking like influencers and not themselves. I'm glad I grew up before the invention of the internet and the flood of influencers. I watch influencers for both entertainment and also to see what fashion items are available out there as it saves me time when shopping. Then I, and only I, decide what I will or will not buy and will or will not wear. And as for LV luggage, I bought a 60cm Bisten suitcase in 1988 from an LV boutique in a Scandinavian country. I also bought a 50cm hard-sided one a few years prior at LV in Monte Carlo. I brought them home and had my luggage guy here make sturdy brown canvas covers for them of which are still on them. The suitcases underneath still look new. I love my LV hard-sided suitcases. As for Tumi, I've also owned a line of Tumi hard-sided suitcases for well over a decade and other Tumi items for a couple decades or more. I've owned a lot of luggage from various brands since back when I was a teen. What type of luggage I use for trips depends on where I'm going. Greetings from Los Angeles

After having two very difficult pregnancies, my “push present” ( as Americans call them) were two LV handbags. One is big, the other small. I absolutely adore both my bags, they’re the only luxury items in my closet and they remind me of my strength as a mom. They remind of my two beautiful children… I couldn’t care less if they have logos or not or what people think, because they have a sentimental value to me.

Great video and great message about investing “in things that can’t be taken away from you”, like education. It is so hard to buy your first home these days and when I see young people blowing what little money they have and probably going into great debt for a thing that only has value because you think others will see you as better, I think of how they have no idea of the real cost of fabricating this illusion.

Luxury items always have ridiculous prices. If you are not into it then go investing but there are more to life than just making money all the time. Sometimes you just wanted a little lux item or lux experience in life because when you're dead you won't be able to enjoy your money yourself. All of these are just things so have a little fun, a little lux and as long its not your money or debt it's no concern of yours.

Wow! This was a lot of great information -- saving us mistakes. Loved the suggestions, Alice. Also, I think your concept of investment and waiting until one reaches a certain level of success to get a bag commensurate with that status, is wise and unique. I have a gorgeous niece who married a billionaire's son -- she could buy any product on earth, if she wanted and she dresses well but modestly and discreetly. I have never seen any logo item on her. I think that speaks volumes.

Alice, you hit the nail right on the head when you said these luxury items you won't wear all the time. In my opinion they are strictly for wealthy people, people who earn a very high salary, and can afford to wear a pair of shoes for instance, only very occasionally ❤

Also, a big thing I'm not sure you mentioned is that people need to be realistic about if they even have a need or place to wear these items. I do not have a Birkin or Kelly on my list because for my lifestyle/job I would have nowhere to use it very often. ❤

If you really want to take care of your skin, invest in a dermatologist and they will tell you 1) wear sunscreen whenever you are out 2) what keeps skin looking good is good health, hydration, a healthy diet and wearing barrier products that keep moisture in. Effective products are not necessarily expensive; go for efficacy and product reviews by expert organizations (not labels)! I worked in the cosmeceuticals industry and aside from these basic beauty steps, what you are buying is hope in a jar - don't waste your money. Invest in care, and, if you like botox, laser treatments and things that actually do something to your skin to improve its appearance.

Love your videos! Everything you say is so true. Everytime I see someone with logos, brand name products I feel so sorry for them, as the reason for such display is not having enough confidence in themselves. In order to feel confident, they need to wear branded items to be seen. However, I find such display cheap looking as I know that the quality of those products may not be good, but it's all about the logo and the look. There is a reason wealthy people dress in quiet luxury and elegance. That is at least how I was raised.

Excellent video. For me, the definition of luxury is not being broke. Luxury is financial freedom. Luxury is not being a wage slave to buy things you can’t afford. Luxury, regardless of your status in life, is the ability to occasionally splurge reasonably. I would much rather spend 10K on a month long vacation for my family to travel, to learn, to experience, to enjoy one another. We only have a short time to experience this world. Invest in those you love, not a stupid purse. Don’t be the fool for people who would readily laugh at you as you give them the fruits of your labor.

Grazie! et merci. Very good video-- great information. My mamma used to say the "luxury logos" were tacky-- Question: Brunello Cucinelli makes extremely expensive clothing-- as does Miuccia Prada.... In Milano one can get the same quality for a lot less. For me, they are "more sophisticated" brands.....the gentleman is wearing Gucci shoes....;) Also, Sisley are extremely expensive. (if you say it's worth it over La Prairie or Valmont, great,) My personal goal is to give zero money to the Arnault family. Basta. I hope you enjoy your Birkin when you get it. Just remember: there are places where people will try to steal the sac rather than the money. My decision is to have as much peace of mind as possible in the world. a late Happy 2024!!!

I agree that trendy bags are tricky, but belts offer so much versatility. You can use them to cinch a dress, jacket, or any outfit, adding a polished touch. Plus, you don’t need to display the entire logo-just drape a top slightly over it for a subtle look. Belts are also more affordable compared to bags, and they are clean, sharp, stylish, and durable.

When it comes to skincare, what works well for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. A plastic surgeon one said to save your money on moisturizers because they really don’t do much. He said get a good vitamin c serum, sunscreen and a retin a/retinoid for night. The rest is all about the same.

I am new to your channel and it's terrific! I worked in high level jobs in fashion and beauty at top brands (including Gucci and Valentino) and the costume jewelry @ Valentino had high price tags ONLY because it bears the Valentino brand name - we used to laugh at the mark-up AND the people wasting their money just because it was Valentino. There are innumerable very high quality brands to be had and their value lies within the item; NOT the logo that they slap on the front. But you have to know how to look for these items and you also need to understand that everything that any designer produces is done to make money. A cotton T with Prada slapped on the front is still just a cotton T. You are paying to advertise their brand for them and generate income for them. Always buy because you love the item and not the name attached to it. It is not elegant to advertise whose designs you are wearing due to their logos spread all over the place - doing this will just remind people that you want folks to know that it's "that" expensive brand. Valentino, Gucci, Prada et al don't make money on their couture because their customer base is small; they make money off the accessories and small items that are affordable to a larger audience. Those who can afford couture would never bring attention to the brands, because they don't want to draw attention to themselves or their wealth because 1) they are secure in who they are and don't need you to know who made their socks and 2) they don't want their privacy and security compromised. Finally being well dressed, elegant and having style has nothing to do with what you spend and everything to do with how you put yourself together. I bought my Burberry raincoat in 1984 - it's so well made it still looks new. I bought my Ferragamo evening bag that same year - still looks good. I bought my new Christian LaCroix suit from a thrift store for $40 - adored it but never wore it and finally resold it last year.

well, I love my LV suitcase. It's a cabin bag so I always have it with me. It still looks perfect after 4 years of constant use. It could only get ruined after the plane crash. But then I wouldn't care, would I? 😜

Your last comments were wow ! You have such a healthy mentality about these things. Most people unfortunately lack the education (in a sense that these things have to be taught) about money and how to have a good relationship with yourself. This irrational spending is a disease and companies make huge profit from it. The influencers are just another tool these companies use. I don't even follow such people anymore. There are so many creative people that you can actually learn from.

The iconic late Jane Birkin herself no longer wanted to own the bag named after her. So in my humble opinion, class is how you carry yourself and treat others. I personally own a LV handbag but it is plain (no logo print). Nothing against those who love the logos but I personally prefer to admire the quality of the artisan's craftmanship. I also own a couple of Bottega Veneta bags because they are so well-made and do not have a flashy logo. I inherited a simple Gucci bag from my grandmother, no frills or logos, just good quality that still looks great today. But this is just my own personal preference. I also believe that you should wear your clothes (accessories, etc.) and not the other way around.

I agree with what you say. My old LV is the Brea in vernis leather with the embossing (no big print) and it's indestructible. The Bot Venega is an old subtle intrecciato with no logos or outside markings at all. Lovely, understated and also very tough.

Estee Lauder skincare is the best. It works. The Perfectionist serum is botox in a bottle. It’s not inexpensive skincare, but not LeMer prices.

I buy so called “luxury” items purely for their utility value and durability. Some of the items I have are, 1, Watches from Rolex, Omega, JLC and Grand Seikos. 2, A laptop bag from COACH which I take to work every day and have been doing for years! Also have their belt. 3, A leather biker jacket from BELSTAFF 4, winter jackets from Canada Goose, 66North 5, I just bought a a travel duffle bag from LV called the the keepall 55 bandouliere. Its on the way! Am I doing this right?

Thank goodness, I never owned a pair of Louboutins. Years ago, I wanted them badly, but my family said, “ no way!” (Because of the ridiculous price) Videos and posts of real-life people experiencing buyer’s remorse with Louboutins made me change my mind. That saved me lots of money and sanity. I agree that mid-priced shoes (between lower-priced/quality mall brands and luxury designer) are the sweet spot. For example, Ally NYC’s shoes, including its signature 75mm classic stilettos, are astonishingly comfortable with its plush cushioning and excellent arch support. It also comes on four widths. The Black Friday sale is the best time to purchase them (and sample sale if you know your size). Ally NYC shoes are pricey (but nowhere near Louboutin prices), but the comfort makes them worth it.

Maybe we should do what we love, and forget about what was trendy six years ago and is out today. One, it will come back if you wait long enough. Two, stop following "trends" altogether, then nothing will be out and nothing will be in, just a closet full of what you enjoy.

Honestly, people are blinded by labellust. Look at the item, the materials and the fit. Does it suit you? How much is Iran is it worth that for you? Yes? Buy it, if not leave it. So many so called luxury brands are charging very high prices for mediocre quality and service. That’s not luxury. Most mid range brands pricewice offer much better products and craftsmanship.

Hear me out - don' buy the brand. Buy the item. Want a leather bag? Find an artisan and have it commissioned. Want jewelry? Buy the jewelry piece, not the brand (Van Cleef is 20-30x of what it's worth, same with Cartier, Tiffany etc. Avoid them! want gold? Buy gold. Want a certain design? Again, cheaper to commission it). Leather shoes? Buy leather shoes. DO NOT BUY BRANDS! Brands, especially luxury brands, are an automatic 20-30x mark up. Don't be an idiot, don't buy them.

Excellent and really true statement - people who buys these luxury products does not have the lifestyle, social status and taste. They think wearing these product comes with these. Instead invest, work hard and earn your wealth. Then buy these products. Often when you have money, you want your money to work hard for you. Instead of wasting on these luxury stuff.

I couldnt agree with you more on the last point... the other day a UK influencer made a video on how it is not safe to wear designer bags in London.... I made exactly the same comment... these bags were made to ladies who were driven around with a chauffeur, these bags usually should come with the lifestyle and usually the lifestyle comes first.... what is the point in having these bags and wearing them on the underground... or constantly worrying about being robbed. Have a nice workbag, like yourself, maybe one or two smaller ones when you go out, but that is all. Until you get there, look after yourself, your health, your skin, invest into your connections, education. Also influencers quite often just take a photo with the bag and then they send it back....no point in spending on these if other areas of your life would need that money. Designer things are nothing if you are not healthy, fit, educated, in 10 minutes it will come out. Of course a bit of investment into nice pieces is fine to look polished but not on LV, Dior, etc level.

The rich with class do not wear logos or monogramed stuff. Those who wear them are those who have no class but have money and they think they can buy status. They're so wrong! If they knew how classy people laugh at them on their backs. And those boutique workers most of the times have more class than the customers.
