Alicorn Sunny Permanent?!? New G5 Concept Art!!

I just wanted to drop by and clear everything up here, since people are getting confused: Imalou herself confirmed over on Twitter that this ISNT - i repeat, ISNT - Sunny’s permanent Alicorn form. instead, it’s actually *an early design* she came up with before Hasbro decided to make the wings and horn transparent. as far as I know, it’s still too early to tell if her Alicorn self is gonna be permanent when the show starts. hope that clears things up for anybody

shame, i'd like to see this being the 'permanent version! like over the tv season series, her having to EARN the permanence, by bringing ponies together, and once she does, then earning permanent ones like in the early design- almost making these transparent ones like 'ghosts' of what they could be in the future? I just really really love the idea of the colours and just how incredibly pretty the concept art wings were. so sunset-y!

Personally i'm still hoping that Sunny's Alicorn form is temporary, and that the form will be something that Sunny will be able to switch on and off and i think the way her Alicorn form looked in the concept art looked cooler than the way it did in the movie.

I like the idea of her being a “princess-in-the-making”. The etherial wings and horn feel like a halfway step to full alicornhood. And for all we know, there might not be any alicorns left in Equestria, so the idea that Sunny would have to learn to be an alicorn like Celestia or Luna is intriguing. I could almost see a situation where Sunny becomes the new Celestia and maybe Izzy becomes the new Luna, given their obvious sun and moon themes.

I don't think there ARE any alicorns left; since Equestrian society treats alicorns as a symbol of unity, and it's clear that the unity has vanished. It makes sense that at some point, alicorns vanished; and that was when things started to fall apart. Maybe Twilight never found a successor. Or maybe one of her successors didn't.

I rather the transparent golden wings and horn, I imagine Sunny would have a long way to come before permanently getting wings and a horn, but can you imagine how funny it would be for sunny to take the band out of her hair and Izzy, Hitch, Pipp and Zipp quickly running and hiding behind a bush, while A possible foe has no idea why they’re hiding.

As someone else mentioned in the comments above, I think initially she'll stay an earth pony for a little longer. The magic just came back, so maybe she's going to get it kinda on and off for a while until it becomes permanent. For me, at least, this makes sense considering her current horn and wings look a bit transparent, so maybe they aren't permanent yet.

My guess is that Sunny’s alicorn form is still temporary as the horn and wings are transparent and she gains hair stripes when in said form. In the concept art, they have a normal form and a form when she is using her powers which changes her hair. They could have run with that but changed it to her transforming into her alicorn form instead of when simply using powers. We could very well see a permanent alicorn form later in the series say once she completes the goal of truly uniting the three species again.

I was thinking that it may require more than just the 3 pony species... it might involve all the other creatures from gen4 as well... considering this isn't just another universe but the same one later on I'm time. Sunny and the mane 5 may have to go about re-uniting the pony races with the dragons, changelings, crystal ponies, hipogriphs/merponies, griffins, and yaks... none of them were present in the movie so maybe they have to rekindle their relationships with those creatures as well

It would be too easy and less meaningful if she became an Alicorn right off that bat like that I think, she needs more time to develop. I think we need to see more of her character overcoming challenges so that when she finally has a big breakthrough she can accend to an Alicorn and it'll be more meaningful/impactful

I personally had two theories that I believe both have a 50/50 shot. A) The alicorn state is more temporary, like popular belief, and will be kinda like a 'super saiyan' or 'avatar state' to be used in extreme situations B) Her alicorn state is permanent, but the transparent look in the movie was a placeholder while she grows a true horn and wings. A lot has changed, perhaps alicornhood isn't as easy to just POP suddenly full horn and wings. Given the evidence above, and as a way to stand as a permanent sign of unity between the three kinds of ponies, I think Sunny will have a permanent alicorn form by the time the series arrives.

My only issue with that second theory is that Twilight immediately got her wings, even though she was only a unicorn. I could see the possibility that her body just won't grow them immediately because of her 'breed' (as Izzy described it in Fit Right In), but if that were the case, Twilight would've had transparent outlines as well.

@@lunarfox8875 We could tie it to the fact that magic has been gone for generations. Sure it's back now, but as G4 established, friendship is magic. And right now, in that world, friendship between the races is very lacking. Twilight was able to fully transform because equestria was (mostly) harmonious and all the pony kinds were mixed together. Sunny transformed in a world where the pony kinds are divided, and only recently are opening up. This could be the reason why.

I'm actually now intrigued by the idea that Sunny's Alicorn state is permanent in the sense that it's a power up that she will have for the rest of the series, with some kind of triggering for accessing it. The braid coming/being undone to trigger the transformation is particularly neat to imagine because it's a very in-character "Let's Get Dangerous" move...and yes; I would LOVE to see a moment where Izzy goes "now you're in for it/in trouble/something in that vein" because Sunny's undoing her braid. That would also possibly allow for a scene where Izzy undoes the braid to trigger the transformation for Sunny because of a situation where Sunny is unable to trigger it herself but they need the form badly. This could admittedly also be done by one of the other members of the Mane 5 but most situations that would require the swift action, at least in my head, would require telekinesis. For one of the Pegasus Princesses or Hitch, I suppose "locked in a cell together with a badly injured and/or unconscious Sunny" would allow for a close quarters unbraiding but still; that would be much more situational than Izzy deciding to trigger it by yanking the braid loose with her magic. Bit long-winded but that's definitely a concept that would lead to some pretty cool fanfics. Some of which I might write myself...

The wings and horn Sunny get in the movie have a much more etheric appearance. Not just being golden and glowing but are clearly transparent and it makes me think that they don't even have any physical presence at all, like if you tried to touch them, you'd just go through them.

There’s something that never left my mind about this movie, the fact Izzy didn’t become one either. Sure, having 2 Alicorns at once would be a very rushing move but if you come to think of it, Izzy was literally so happy to willingly make friends with other pony races even *before* Sunny fully gained trust in her. They both had similar intentions too. Even with the sight of Pegasi, Izzy had a very accepting friendship desire with them. I’m not saying Sunny didn’t ever feel this either, but if Izzy became an Alicorn some day, she would definitely be next. Their names also seem to foreshadow future events - • *Sun*-ny *Star*-scout (Sun/Day) • Izzy *Moon*-bow (Moon/Night) These 2 seem to almost parallel Celestia and Luna. I am truly hoping to see Izzy become an Alicorn someday along side Sunny. ☀️🌒

well...in my mind this "glowing" form is a more or less temporary thing while flesh and bone are still "forming under the glow"....we are talking about maybe 5 min tops after the power up...maybe it takes some time to realy transform her from an earthpony into an allicorn....also, magic is in a weakend state right now, so it may take a little longer then for twilight ;-)

My current theory is that the glowing horns/wings are temporary and will either not show up again after the movie, or only show up in special circumstances until later into the series when Sunny properly earns them. Then I think they'd become more solid like the concept art, making her the Princess of Hope (i'm assuming). I do find it interesting that the first alicorns in both G4 and G5 are tied to the sun.

From a design standpoint, I think sunny's natural-looking wings from the concept art actually look more interesting. The etheral wings and Horn to look cool, but one could argue that she's not natural Alicorn from that. Maybe this could lead to a story arc where she has to discover what it means to be a natural Alicorn before she gets her wings and horn.

I personally prefer a more solid look from the concepts than the golden look we got from the movie. The golden look makes me uncertain that the transformation is either permanent or just a symbol of Sunny's growth as a character. With the solid concept with the inspiration from Twilight and Luna, I can see Sunny being an Alicorn more permanent as well as a sign of her growth. Especially the rainbow streaks in her mane. Personally, I'd be glad if Sunny's alicorn's shape became permanent. This would foster a lot of fun and new interactions between her group and all the other ponies' settlements! And it will probably have a big impact on her day-to-day life, because I believe the writers are now more aware that meeting an alicorn is not an everyday situation for an ordinary pony, as it apparently have been in G4. :D

If this is temporary then I hope we would get a good understanding behind this weird transformation. Cause in mlp g4 there was rlly no such a thing as temporary alicorn with transparent wings and horn. Only evidence we have on the show was with Rarity's temporary magic wings. Idk I might be the only one that likes the permanent alicorn thing. If it's permanent I think it would be better to have it similar style like what young Twilight alicorn had or Cadence, since alicorns don't get the flowing hair when they are still young or not having that much magical powers. But we saw young alicorn Twilight having flowing hair when she had a magic blast or something that triggered her having more magic at some times. I don't think that Sunny will be royal after this but rather just a well known pony for her heroic acts.

my idea is that what she has is an ability so to speak that unlocks the power when she needs it and only when she needs it, she was still that way up until the credits after it happened but I like to think that was because she hadn't figured out how to hide it away. Its also possible that the golden glow wings and horn are like an outline for where the final thing will be, and she still has to earn the final thing to have fully completed wings and horn. Otherwise she probably wouldn't have a goal or thing to earn during her journey in the upcoming series. She's definitely not finished with her journey yet.

The transformation seems to be about realizing some deeper understanding around harmony/magic/friendship. It ls almost like a partial ascension, maybe at some point she fully steps into this power and truly becomes an alicorn.

The idea of Sunny getting more "solid" wings and horn form is a high possibility, but they may also have a completely new concept with these glowing wings and horn. kind of like how Twilight didn't have the flowing mane until the last episode. If sunny does become a permanent alicorn, I think she should be the Princess of Unity. She did bring all the unicorns, pegasi, and earth ponies together after all. But I'd like to hear what you think Dr Wolf. :)

At this point, since most of what we've seen is just concept art, natrually only a few elements would retain while other times they are much like drafts and nothing is official until someone gives the word to go through. On the subject of Sunny Starscout, we do see that she does become an alicorn (To an extent) and its given a mixed reception from fans going on this debate as to whether it's permanent or not or even how some say it's too early. Still, if Sunny is eventually destined to be the new Princess of Equestria, naturally the upcoming show is going to want to address a few questions that addresses something bigger than just bringing ponies back together. Maybe Sunny herself may very well be the key to what's gone wrong with Equestria as a whole and one of the elements is addressing this newfound form of hers and whether this is truly a permanent ordeal or not. Whereas for some of the other concept designs for the other characters, specifically how the cast would've been very different ponies otherwise, it is 'possible' if not 'probable' that any of these early concept designs may be fitting for some 'new' characters introduced later in the upcoming series. After all, instead of just keeping these designs away in some pile to eventually be forgotten what might not have worked for 'one' character could always work for another.

Maybe her current state _is_ temporary, but that she will eventually ascent to proper alicorn status at some point in the series; perhaps it's a sign that she's destined to become an alicorn.

The thing I"m noticing from the movie that nobody else is apparently noticing is that, even after everyone gets their magic back and can still use their abilities (the short scene where all of the ponies are in Maretime Bay and are helping clean up so to speak), the magic aura on their horns and wings have all disappeared/faded away. This would signify that some time has passed (obviously since it was night time when the transformation took place and day time when the ending scene happens). Despite the fact that everyone's fresh brand new magic has faded and "set in" so to speak, Sunny's wings and horn have NOT. I personally think this signifies that its a permanent change. Still don't know why anyone hasn't noticed that little detail. Or perhaps they're choosing not to notice it. Either way, that's my take on the matter. I guess we'll see when the series comes out though c:

I truly aspire that Sunny will have a temporary cosmetic display, which the corporeal wings and horn were embedded for such a glamorous alteration. And I slightly noticed something that was so amazingly conspicuous, The 3 vivid colors lining up very nice and proportional, which this is a discerning evocation from Frozen, out of Anna accidental trauma circumstance, leaving the remains of a white, neutral line of braids with...OMG I PRACTICALLY FORGOT. SUNNY IS KINDA OF BE LIKE ANNA, but much more surpassive and as a very genuine persona and immense flair too. And taking off the braids for once, but not messy of loused up, that's for certain, and kinda of like Elsa from Frozen 2 for when she had so much cosmetic displays, elegantly and corporeally, (particularly, her majestic hair), but as much as my genuine notion is vastly intriguing, I'm not exactly a person who's gonna get his aspirations up, merely yet.

She's honestly more of a princess of Unity than of Friendship, as her friends focus more on that than she does. Not saying she isn't friendly, though, just that she was the one who wanted Unity the most.

I really like her golden alicorn traits, but the ones in the concept art are definitely more appealing to me (especially her with her normal braid). Though I do hope the rainbow streaks are permanent outside of the glow since those look really good on her. But the more loose remainder of the braid looks nice too. Perhaps if her magic goes to a more full capacity?

I think the glowy part of sunny's alicorn form was when they released the magic because if you remember, unicorn had glowy horns and pegasus had glowy wings

I like to think that Alicorns come into play when Equestria needs them. In old times, it was extremely hard for unicorns to change the day. That’s why celestia and luna had that magic. Similar to twilight and cadence. While their necessity wasn’t as dire as tia and luna, they were still needed to unite ponies and other creatures to protect equestria. Now in present time, the 3 kinds of ponies are divided. Sunny became an “alicorn” because she United them. I don’t think sunny is fully an alicorn yet, but possibly hinting her destiny! But alicorns have a unique kind of magic. Tia: sun, luna: moon, cadence: spreading love, twilight: magic of friendship. What could Sunny’s be?

after thinking it over I think Sunny being a Alicorn could help things, like since she has attributes of each race she could represent all of them which is why i think the ones from G4 ruled the land. granted some may bring up she was once a earth pony but as a Alicorn she could be a kind of neutral party to help things along

Nice concept art. Imalou is one of my favorite artists on Deviant Art. I am pleasantly surprised they got to work in an MLP movie. I like Sunny's alicorn form without the sparkle. It looks more natural. I have an idea of what may be happening. When Sunny change into an alicorn the magic causes a lot of shine and glitter. It is normal for magic to be flashy like that in fiction. Sunny still sparkles a after the change. It can't be that much longer. So there is magical residue. I think that over time the magic will wear off. What is left is a an alicorn form without the sparkle. WHo knows. Maybe in the future Sunny would grow bigger, and her mane and tail will perpetually wave. That is what happened to Twilight at the last episode of G4 MLP.

I actually noticed something interesting. When taking a look at the stained glass windows at the station again, it appears that the ponies have etherial horns and wings. All ponies holding crystals are earth ponies. I believe that the crystals were designed as a way for earth ponies, unicorns and pegasai to utilise each other's magic.

The golden transformation of Sunny Starscout caught me by surprise because in the film when i watched it, i didn't expect the crystals to glow after the lighthouse was destroyed. I expected it to glow at the forest in front of Queen Haven and everyone else.

Twilight was shown during her coronation to be able to fly immediately, only for it to be retconned in s4 e1 where she couldn’t fly again, only for her to pick it up perfectly after mostly failing at the end of that episode I think they’ll have an episode dedicated to newcomers/veterans relearning it after so long and by the end figuring it out just like twilight did. Probably gonna have some retcon stuff

2:50 To answer that is complicated: While I like the traditional design, I also like the new design as well as it sort of makes sunny more unique. The thing I don’t like about it, is that it’s too Glass like (Transparent). Perhaps a mix would be better. It starts off natural, then slowly turns into glass. So her wing tips would be glass and her wing beginning would be natural. A design like this (If done well) could work out in favor for sunny.

Maybe the natural look will slowly develop over time as Sunny learns more about friendship, leadership, and how to fly and use magic (like a gradient). Once the wings and horn are completely natural, the transformation would be permanent. It would make for a nice arc that isn't quite as sudden as Twilight's transformation, because now the lore is more established and we have an idea of where Sunny's story is going.

I think the idea of sunny having „super powers“ would be cool- however i really like the original wings, maybe with more training they could manifest like that (when she has transformed)- she could use the powers to either unite ponies (in a mini-series) or build a team with other (maybe also somewhat uniquely gifted) ponies to fight a bigger threat

I'm still hoping that this form is an occasional powerup for the time being. One thing I noticed that caught my attention in Imalou's concept art is the fact that one of Sprout's earlier designs looked like Shaggy. This got a laugh out of me because he is also a coward who loves food. Then there's the fact that some of the Mane 5 had placeholder titles to describe their roles. Izzy as the caregiver, Hitch as the protector, and Sunny as the explorer. This could describe their roles in the upcoming series.
