Love how the dynamic of the movie is changing. Ripley is starting to become more prevalent, giving the most sensible ideas to tackle the xenomorph, showing her resourcefulness and this leads to her eventual survival, but she still isn't in the spotlight yet, Dallas is still the leader here. Dallas finally owns it up after being passive for the entire first half of the film. Ash is inhumanly calm and well spoken, and even refers to the xenomorph as ‘Kane’s son’, he is beginning to show his true colours as an android. Parker is emotional and angry, while Lambert is soft, anxious and starting to break down in stress.

Well stated!!! As I have told friends over the years, the simple beauty of this film is not the 'alien'.. It is sitting there, watching the crew of the ship breaking down while dealing with the unknown.. For the record, I was too young to see this movie in theaters when it first came out.. But I was able to buy the novelization by Alan Dean Foster from Waldenbooks back in the day.. And it gave me nightmares for months!!! And when I was finally old enough to get the movie on VHS - even though I KNEW the story - the film still gave me a sense of dread and foreboding that I have never felt before in my life!!!

One of the things I love about this film is that even though it’s set in a fantastical sci-fi setting, the workplace dynamic within the crew is very recognisable, especially when your job is as shitty, dirty, and underpaid as theirs and you have to work in close quarters with people who irritate and annoy you. The way Ripley is ignored, talked over, and undermined by men in this film is particularly striking, especially when she was absolutely correct in not wanting Kane back on board while he was infected.
@Alex-tx6by27 күн бұрын
I was with you til the end. The script was written without gender assignment, and I think it comes across in the final product. Someone was going to demand they get back onboard, and someone was going to push back. It's easy to imagine a woman agreeing to allowing Kane on the ship. And once she's in charge Ripley only manages to save herself and a cat, whereas Parker sacrifices himself for Lambert. I agree about the accuracy of workplace dynamics, but this is only meant to ground us so we're genuinely shocked and terrified. All the characters with the exception of Ash are very likable, and even his portrayal is quite muted. . . Ultimately he would have found a way to get the alien onboard, that was his objective.

Look, I don't want an argument, but.. Lambert says, 'Could anyone be alive?' Ripley says 'What?'. And then Lambert says, 'Could Brett be alive?' I recorded this off-air on audio cassette when it was first shown on British TV, and am more than familiar with the dialogue and sound effects, and this had always stood out as an improvisation that somehow slipped through Terry Rawlings' incredible editing prowess. Not that it matters, just thought I'd be a pedant in the comments section. However, Alien is an absolute masterpiece in every respect and I hold it in the highest esteem.

This is exactly why the later Alien movies, especially Covenant were so incomparable to the original - they had no characters in them. I honestly can’t remember a single characters name from Covenant or Resurrection. These people were perfectly cast, beautifully written and even better portrayed. I doubt we’ll ever see these kinds of films again.
@blehman1806624 күн бұрын
I love the original because it actually scared the crap out of me... And it wasn't the blood and gore that movies these days just toss on you for shock value.. It was the 'sense of dread' that built and built from the first moments of the movie.. It was the 'silence' as you saw each face looking at each other and imagining what was going through their minds, as they spoke a few words here and there.. You just sat in that theater, trapped with these folks on the screen... And it was terrifying and perfect!!!! And, as you stated so well - the characters were perfectly cast and even better portrayed!!! Ripley, Dallas, Kane, Ash, Parker, Lambert, Brett... The original gave us enough time to 'get to know each character'... So we could understand them and almost 'feel like we were right next to them' as things 'went south' for the crew of the Nostromo.. Great post!!! PS- Like you, I don't remember almost anybody from Alien Resurrection, but I did enjoy the movie a lot.. Sigourney Weaver was awesome - serious, but also able to play off a bit of 'gallows humor' as a cloned copy of herself from 200 years ago!!

As many times as I've seen it, I guess I never paid that much attention to the interplay between Ripley and Dallas here. When Lambert asks who gets to go into the vent, Ripley immediately responded that she does, fatalistically, as she obviously is afraid but not hesitant to do what she sees as her duty. Dallas immediately contradicts her and takes on the duty for himself, as any decent captain would. After giving out the orders, Dallas looks to Ripley, expecting a reaction. She is clearly surprised and unpleased by being stepped on but is likely too scared to argue, especially considering Dallas is the one with the final say. Anyone going into the vents alone is a horrible idea that should have been discarded. One would think there had to be better options.

Or when on a vessel like this, which is essentially a future towing truck, that it’s better to have something that can’t fail and is tried and true. Or it could honestly just be due to massive budget and tech constraints. Even many years in the future for Alien Resurrection, they had to cut a scene of a CGI fly biting Ripley 8 (the clone) and dying from her acid blooms cause in 1996 CGI still cost too much Imagine that, a cgi fly was too expensive
