ALIEN 3 - WTF Happened To This Movie?

Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Movie?
In the latest episode we look back at what happened to David Fincher's feature film debut and sequel to the Alien series, Alien 3. Met with critical backlash and fan rage over the death of key characters, as well as a claustrophobic setting, Alien 3 quickly became the Black Sheep of the franchise, but later gained a cult following with a longer cut released and a revisit after Alien: Resurrection, the 4th sequel, failed to right any wrongs of the past.

Agreed. It could have had so much more and it would have been good to have had Hicks there in that setting training these prisoners - the only person with any real military training. If they wanted to kill him off, fine but kill him off doing something heroic, not asleep in deep space.

I truly enjoyed Alien 3! Ripley got some! Charles S. Sutton was at the peak of his career. I enjoyed that British actor who was the doctor who gave Ripley some. I have 1-4! I saw the 5th at the box office. I cannot remember it. I will buy the DVD! Thank you! In the beginning of the movie I was very disappointed about Hicks being killed and little Newt. However over all, she stood her ground! Sigourney Weaver rocks!

I really did like Alien3, I though the small-ish isolated cast that had to defend for themselves really worked as a horror type film (typical trope), but did it in a way that was engaging and unique. Much better than Covenant, and better than Resurrection, though I did like that movie as well, but it seemed to jump the shark a bit for the franchise there.

The story should have been set 15-20 years after Aliens with a grown Newt as the female lead and the other characters in supporting roles. This would have closed the Ripley era and moved the franchise in a new direction. Personally , I would have liked the idea of seeing the home planet of the xenomorphs. Maybe with Newt obsessed with finding out what they are and where they came from. Fox can call me if they want to use my idea...😉

I remember at the time hearing of a concept (supposedly written by Neil Gaiman) in which the xenomorphs were a biological weapon created to battle the "Space Jockey" race. A scent provided a type of IFF (Identify Friend or Foe) indicator so the xenomorphs would leave you alone. With the Space Jockey race now making itself known (with disastrous results), Earth decides to make use of this new weapon to help combat them. As a result, Ripley is now forced to work WITH the aliens to battle an even bigger threat (and she is SERIOUSLY unhappy about that). Upon reading of this concept (I think it was in a Starlog article?), I came up with the idea of Ripley losing her IFF and having to kill some xenomorphs in order to stay alive; much to the ire of her superiors ("These creatures are FAR more important than you are!"). Just this second, I've mentally added that not only does she prove herself a great fighter, the xenomorphs actually begin to obey HER because her tactics are better (again, much to the chagrin of her superiors)! I'm now picturing her commanding a great xenomorph army. {sigh} I *really* liked this concept and was quite annoyed that it wasn't used. :-/

Its definitely nowhere as perfect like the first two, but I love this movie. The idea of the xenomorph taking on animal characteristics from its host (dog or ox depending the cut) was awesome and that musical score was just badass. Also I loved there was no "happy" ending for anyone. I feel one way or another, Ripley and company would fall victim to the Alien at some point so I give the film credit for having the guts to kill them off.

Absolutely. A3 is a return to the tough, hardcore ALIEN world after ALIENS' fun B adventure. I was perplexed when I first saw it but it really stuck with me. It's not as whole or slick as the first two, but the music, art direction and photography and acting were all amazingly good. It's hampered by the script problems, and it's too bad Fincher never got a script he loved. Taking all that in, it's amazing how good it is.

When a sequel is made and actors and supporting cast negotiate for filming a part 2; sometimes Movie Studios want to play hard ball. To keep costs down or limit the influence of select actors and actresses. This sort of "divide and subvert" the past is very common in Hollywood. The easiest way is to "import" new actors or look a-likes, to keep costs from sky-rocketing. Another reason [for cancellation] may have to do with cost of a script - or politics of international movie goers. Fame has quite a bit into it as well.

I really liked it too. But we're in the minority here. I think if an open mind can be kept and its judged solely on its own and not an extension of the first two maybe people would like it more..I don't know. I think it's atmospheric, depressing, exactly how being on a prison island would be. And the end scene (spoiler) is shot in a way that makes it very unsettling, and exactly how Ripley would go out. Her dying in that way fits because she would want to insure that the alien was toast.

Aliens is my all time favorite movie and Alien3 has always been in my top 5 or 10. It was a perfect end to the trilogy. Most people just wanted more of the same formula from Aliens. But what they fail to realize is that if that movie had been made it would have been doomed to fail as well. You simply can't recapture that kind of lightning in a bottle again with a sequel. Look at the followups that tried (Resurrection, Covenant). So they took it in a different direction than expected. Killing off Newt and Hicks really angered people, but it was never their story. It was always Ripley's story so that never really bugged me (the central character and focal point of Prometheus being killed off screen between movies was much more egregious). Overall I loved the story, the characters, the tension, the acting, the music, the ending. It was a really well made movie all around in my opinion.

A true mess behind the scenes, yes. But I love this movie. It's a perfect ending to the Alien trilogy. Theatrical cut and assembly cut both have their strengths, and I love them both. Fincher did an amazing job. This is where the story ends for me. I'm not including that silly "Resurrection" in my Alien-saga.

There was a book version that matched the first trailer. In it, the Company brought a queen egg from the Sulaco to Earth, where religious fanatics stole the egg, raised a queen, and eventually had 4 of their members volunteer to be hosts for more queens. And before you knew it, they were spreading across the Earth. At some point the Engineers (Space Jockey race) showed up, but not to help, but to plunder the Earth. Or something like that -- end of book. (aside: I read it 20 years ago, so I don't remember all of it).

Assembly Cut version is actually my fav Alien film. Partly because I was introduced to Alien through Alien 3 so it has the nostalgia factor, but it also fixes about 90% of what's wrong with the cinema version of the movie and while probably not exactly what Fincher had in mind, it shows what he was trying to do. It's also really sad, cause if he was allowed to make his vision, we'd get a movie that could rival the greatness of both Seven and Fight Club. Meanwhile, worst Alien film is Alien Resurrection, which is kinda baffling... it had some cool ideas, Sigourney Weaver, Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman, Brad Douriff and was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and visually is really stylish... yet it's... meh? Even Prometheus and Alien Covenant are better. (I've never watched any of the AVP films btw so not counting them here)

Don't care what anyone says; Alien 3 (assembly cut) is my favorite Alien movie. Favorite - not necessarily "best". It's just sooo grim. The fact that they kill of Hicks and Newt is awesome. Then they stick Ripley in a rapers prison with no weapons and throw an alien in there. Love it. It's such a different film, almost like an art movie. If you need to feel like crap, this movie is perfect. The acting is excellent, it looks great, and for all the Fincher moaning, it's a very well made film that probably made him who he is. It's certainly better that most of his later films. Anyways, great vid!
