As far as I'm concerned, Ripley's story ended in _Alien 3_. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing A3 retconned out of canon. It won't stop the movie from existing, and it could eliminate the plot holes the series now has thanks to A3. Namely HOW THE HELL DID THAT EGG GET ON THE _SULACO_?!

+Ernie Velveeta Ridley knows all the answers to the questions in Prometheus just as much as lindelof did, now we have a different writer with a far more promising track record executing it. Also it seems like the ultimate compromise between Prometheus fans and alien fans which I think is smart, and the right move.

I'm not saying Prometheus explained anything - it just *shows* us more of what happened and, as I said, broadens the universe. Now we know how a Weyland Yutani Expedition looked like, what bigger facilities of the engineers looked like, some more gadgets the united systems used and so on and so forth. Does this add a lot of substantial information? No - but it offers a chance for a lot more speculation surrounding it. I don't want these movies explaining to me everything in detail anyway - that would just lead to a big, convoluted mess that overthinks itself. In the end, I don't want to suggest Prometheus was a better movie than Alien 5 would have been. All I'm saying is that prequels have, in my opinion, a greater *chance* of providing backstory - with or without explaining more. Whether or not they use that potential, well, that is a different story.

+MrMartechi holy shit right, the first film in a 3 to 4 film prequel series doesn't answer all the questions. I loved Prometheus because it asked more questions than answered and expanded the universe to such a large magnitude. I too, am more excited about the prequel series(but I still want alien 5 to Unfuck 3 and 4) because of the intriguing questions it asked. Buuuuuuut Prometheus did answer something unquestionably. Why is it a big deal if they get to earth if just one woman can constantly survive them? The Bloomkamp film seemed like a fanfic movie that would rehash what we've seen before. Alien 3 was aperfect ending to the Ripley story.

I think an Alien invasion of earth could be interesting if they went full on apocalypse Really bring a sense of threat to the xenomorphs and it would also please fans of Aliens who want more of a war film. They could also go to the Alien homeworld which could be really horrific if they made the home world a giger-esque hellish landscape. Though they seem to be going the creationist route with that which worries me.

Feels like, once again, Ridley Scott having delusions of grandeur when it comes to Alien. He already proved, with Prometheus, that the best ideas in the Alien Universe came from creator, Dan O'Bannon and the writers & filmmakers who came after. Scott did a genius job of bringing O'Bannon's story to the screen and making it visually stunning, but at some point he convinced himself that he created this universe and had a bigger plan for it all along. I'm a much bigger fan of Alien3 and Resurrection than many would probably admit, but Prometheus was such a shallow dud that boringly dispelled a few of my favorite mysteries of the overall story. I prefer not to think of it as canon just to keep the story as captivating as It's always been in my imagination. I will see Covenant and will be the first to admit if Scott can prove me wrong. I WISH he would, but already, the trailer doesn't look like much more than a slasher and more of Ridley making things up as he goes while trying to claim it was always what he was thinking. Saddest in all of this, I was much more excited for Blomkamp's film.

I say do them both. I'd rather learn about the history of the Xeno's way more, but also have the core series unfucked. Plus Prometheus was way more innovative than given credit, but hey, most films with actual complexity find themselves in a somewhat controversial place. Still tho, fox has a completed alien script that the fanbase clearly wants. They may just save it and get a better director. Imagine if they got James Cameron after filming all his avatar sequels(which are being filmed all at once I might ad) or sir Ridley himself. Depending on the feel of the movie, and if fox is a little experimental, maybe even Christopher Nolan cause he sold me after interstellar. Another highly complex movie that is somewhat controversial.

I think Ridley's prequel series needs to stay away from Ripley's story. Ripley was a third commanding officer on a space truck, she wasn't anyone important until "Aliens". But if Blomkamp plans to retcon Alien 3 then I don't think it should be made.

I've been waiting for this Blomkamp project ever since it was announced. I was very excited when it I heard his plans to bring Hicks, and Newt back. I was also curious to see how they would include Bishop, and deviate from 3 and 4. I know some might not care for his last two films, but I appreciate his visual style and attention to detail ( props, makeup effects, CGI, costumes, etc ). It fits this universe very well. Add the fact that he's a huge fan of the first 2, and its a win win. I really hope Fox makes this happen. Sigourney wants it, tons of fans want it, and it will make money. Ripley's story can't end with Resurrection.

Mark Verheiden knocked it out of the park in the first Dark Horse comic series in '88. I was so bummed when Alien 3 came out. And then to realize that he was a producer/writer on Battlestar Galactica, just made me wish that someone would have recognized the genius of his story arc, with Newt as an adult with the missing mother and father figures that get reunited near the end of the story as the engineers try to destroy earth. It was all so brilliant and sad. Alien 5 got my hopes up but hopefully Sir Ridley Scott will pull through.

One thing that needs to be taken into account is the time it takes to do all these movies. If in fact an "Alien 5" were to happen once the series involving Prometheus and Covenant is complete, a new movie with Weaver in it would have to be shot relatively quickly. The reason I say this is because at present Sigourney Weaver is 67 years old. And where she looks great for her age, to put here in an action movie past say her mid 70's is very unlikely to me.

I have been a fan of Alien since I was 8, which was in 1997 approx, when I saw the first alien movie and it blew my mind - I used to watch alien and aliens every weekend on VHS after school. I even watch Resurrection after that but couldn't get my hands on the vhs. Alien 3 was the last film I watched, and it left mixed feelings withing me. I am still feeling weird towards it ^_^ but watch it none the less.

If there should be made a follow up to Aliens, there is only one option, and that is to follow the work by Mark Verheiden in his comics "Aliens Book one", "Book two", and "Aliens Earth war". That would be a hell of a comeback for the core franchise, and a worthy end to the story about Hicks, Newt and Ripley. If you wonder why so many people think Alien3 sucks, (no need to mention the rest) then go get the comics, and read how it really should have been done. Too bad Cameron didnt finish the job at his watch. If you havent read these comics, go get em ;)

The problem with the films after Aliens, was that they kept treating the Alien like a space bug. The directors forgot that James Cameron's version was only ONE interpretation of the Xenos. The first Alien film implied that the Xeno had human eyes. What if it had a brain? What if it could choose how to molt further? What if its mutations were chosen?

TBH I think alien should stop reusing the human protagonists - it just often seems unrealistic for a given human to encounter the alien(s) so many times in their life, often in unrelated circumstances. Multiple chance encounters makes suspension of disbelief difficult. Also the alien is the feature of the films; more so than the protagonists, who while good, strong, well written characters (I love Ripley - but she could have finished her story at aliens IMO), they ultimately serve as a foil to the alien as a character(s).

My guess is Ridley showed Neil something which Neil agreed HAD to be in Covenant but which blew his own premise out of the water, and now he's having trouble working everything else around it. Script and concept troubles when the project is in the middle of its studio pitch phase can spell the end of a project, and this might be why he's communicating pessimism right now.

Ridley did get, what I think, was a fitting send off in the theatrical release of Alien 3. It highlights the tragedy of her character, she spends all the time fighting them, risking her life against them, and they can anyone who pushes the odds, they finally catch up with her

Sigourney's getting older, like we all do, and who knows how much longer she's going to feel game to do another Alien film. I love the fact they want to continue with going foward with Weaver in a new movie. I know it will be put on hold. What I hope for is more scary alone scenes to bring back from both Alien, and Aliens. What would be nice is prequels for the Preditor hunters so we have more understanding. I had this feeling too, a possible cross over. Though I am seeing SO MUCH hate towards Ridley Scott and in all honesty it's really pissing me off. Blomkamp is a ok director but i think it's ballsy as hell to tease fans with his fan art and then in effect try wipe out Alien 3 and....that other one (that can go). What right has he got? no where near as much right as Ridley put it that way. At least he is trying to do something different with it. Prometheus had it's problems but that was down MOSTLY to Damon Lindelof, yes, Ridley signed off on it, but i don't think he deserves anywhere near as much hate as he is getting......I want to see Hicks and Ripley again too as much as the next guy but let's be realistic, these people are ageing, even pulling it off now is pushing it. I love the idea of Ripley and David in the same movie. The chemistry between them would be fantastic because of Ripleys past with synthetics. The thought of those two Hollywood heavyweights in an Alien film together would be very exciting, using the characters histories and combining them to whatever effect. Honestly I really hope that Covenant provides a lot more backstory and information about the definitive purpose of the "black goo." Read a theory that the goo was a terraforming agent, with the Xenomorphs being an occasional mishap caused by abnormalities in the host environment. Would be bitchin if Covenant confirmed something like this or something very similar. Would love to have a game where you could actually play as the Engineers, go back and forth between planets and see how the terraforming went, maybe mess with the environment a bit to see what happens

As much as I liked Hicks and Newt, in my opinion they are dead. I do not like the idea of trying to "write off" Alien 3 or Alien Resurrection. There is however, a ton of time to fill in between Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. You just couldn't have Ripley, which would be box office bad news.

Been binge-watching your channel. Interesting vids. One question: what are the chances of doing a feature on Weyland-Yutani itself? The mega-corp is pretty much ever-present and seems obsessed with the xenomorphs...yet beyond that we don't really know a whole hell of a lot about it.

Whether Ridley or Blomkamp does it I'd love to see that - huge time jumps made possible because David doesn't age, and the opportunity this creates to reprise older versions of existing Alien trilogy characters. The only thing I would be a bit wary of is if it's dependant on Alien 3 and Resurrection remaining canon again. I.e. A 3rd or future Prometheus continuity film's David meeting the cloned Ripley from Alien Resurrection. It would remove the need for 2 films to be scrubbed from continuity, satisfactorily account for Ripley's ageing possibly even allow Winona Ryder to respites her android Call too. I'd like to see those two characters carry on as much as or perhaps more than Hicks and the little girl. Also it will legitimately be at the latest chronological point in the movie continuity so if they ended David and Ripley's stories together on the same film it will strengthen every main cinematic universe Alien film together. We could even see David's experiments with the black goo explain the newborn. I'm not saying I want that to be the main plot but it would be nice just to have it confirmed through audience deduction.

I really want ripleys story to come to a good conclusion. And with Scott and weaver getting up there in age, Scott should let Neill do his version of alien, before it's too late.

I think the Alien series could be as great as the Star Wars franchise. It was one of the best-conceived Sci Fi stories out there. Like Star Wars, the story could go in a lot of different directions, timeline crossovers included. If Sigourney Weaver felt the story was excellent I would think that would be a really good sign. She has a complete picture of how her timeline has evolved and what would conclude it most amazingly and satisfyingly. As she was quoted, "I hope they do it..."

You know, I would have loved to have seen Alien 5, but I'm not a fan of film series changing their unpopular stories with time travel (X-Men, Star Trek, the Mortal Kombat games) or ignoring the unpopular installments as if they didn't happen (like what Bryan Singer tried to do with Superman Returns). I feel it's kinda lazy and over complicated the story. I'd rather see writers actually acknowledge mistakes made in the franchise and actually take these mistakes as a challenge to improve the series and tell better stories rather than "uh pay no attention. Those movies don't count anymore". But that's just me I guess.

My question for the movies going forward that Ridley Scott is directing, is the David Android in the Covenant Trailer the same one from Prometheus, or is he a different android of the same make and model?

I think that's entirely possible. It's what I would think and I'm disappointed that it's being said it won't happen or at least not for a long time. Anything can change and fans can make a difference when it comes to a passionate and loyal one like the aliens franchise. I want a proper Alien 3 and it has the consent and intrigue of Weaver which is huge.

Im not quite sure about this new direction things are going with the alien movies to be honest... I sort of want to see that Alien 5 become a reality, but the Prometheus movie was quite interesting as well! The most important aspect in any case is that they keep the nature and lore of the xenomorphs. The name "Prometheus" itself suggest that these aren't exactly a "Alien" movie anymore, but more about the encounter of an alien life form. They share some similar aspects (facehugger/impregnation proccess and the chestburster thing), but thats how far the first Prometheus movie took it. The sequel seem to have the eggs in it, so I guess we'll just have to see how it goes. I hope we'll see a massive leap in the alien life cycle and evolution of the life form itself, and that it will become something more similar to what we saw in the original movies. In any case, Im just a huge fan of the Alien mythology/movies/comics, and a huge sci-fi fan in general. I pretty much watch anything no matter what. Some of it turns out to be great, while others are complete shit! What would be a total bummer is if the Alien/xenomorph consept gets a full "rewrite" and turns into its very own thing. If so, then they should have stayed away from the original consept and Gigers vision of the creature all together! But thats just my humble opinion though...

I think that perhaps Scott is making alterations to the universe that perhaps contradict Blomkamps vision. Perhaps Blomkamp wrote some new lore in the series and Ridley wanted Blomkamp to see what he was doing first before he did anything else?

I say no to another Alien sequel, at least one with Ripley in it. Ripley already met her end in Alien 3; no need for another end for her. Let's move on from Ripley. If anything, a story should be done on Ripley 8 since at least she's still alive. And no retconning either. There's no need to retcon. If there's such a great story to tell post-Aliens it should've been told the first time around. I feel like Sigourney Weaver is to the Alien series what Arnold Schwarzenegger is to the Terminator series - the star who people unnecessarily elevate over the actual storyline. There's a lot more to explore in the Alien universe that doesn't require Weaver or her character. Again, if they want to continue Ripley 8's story that's fine, but to bend over backward to bring back Ellen Ripley because they didn't kill her off right the first time is just messy and pointless.

Yeah... to be sure, I'm not a fan of Ripley 8 or Alien: Resurrection either. But continuing Ripley 8's story would at least make more sense than retconning Ellen Ripley.

I think the only way it could work is to have something to do with time travel or a time distortion occurring to explain the alteration from the previously made films. It worked well for the rebooting of Star Trek in my opinion.

For these big franchise movies, the rights to make the sequels should be conditioned on a requirement that no more than 3 years between releases is allowed of the rights are automatically opened for bidding. Use it or loose it. It's absurd how long we go without new alien movies. Same for Star Trek.

I'd hate for the prequels to be cause for a hold on films further down the line IF they really don't impact Blomkamp's vision . . I always worry delays mean there is a chance your cast could die or get locked into another project that truly kills or overly delays to the point of true cancellation.

I love Alien movies and I will never skip any of them - I never have! And I am pretty sure I'm not hte only one here, so why Neil can't make his movie and release it after Covenant? Both movies could be awesome, give him a chance!

I honestly think the fear is that there is only 'that' big of a market for Alien as a franchise. So, they are trying to be careful and don't want to risk movies competing with each other. Now, where is our detailed video about Yutani! I so very badly want to know more about that company and why they are (were) so obsessed with fucking around with the aliens and never learning from their failures.

Retconned Alien 3 or 4 is the stupidest decision, it only demonstrates eagerness for money and will mess up with the Alien Universe. There's only one Ripley left, a clone one. Deal with it.

Part of me feels like the studio was teetering on edge between giving Blomkamp the green light, or continuing Ridley Scott's prequels, and the deciding factor was how Chappie performed. Financially it was a moderate success, but it was a critical failure. Prometheus wasn't a critical darling either but did rake in about 3-4 times the box office that Chappie did. Being that Ridley Scott had the edge in terms of money the studio heads gave him the reigns, and put Blomkamp on the back burner. I have no doubt Scott's intention is to fill in the blanks in regards to the origin of the xenomorphs as well as bridge the gap between the prequels and Aliens. The addition of new lore, and continuity is probably going to do a number on Blomkamp's original screenplay, renendering it useless.

One problem I had with Prometheus is the technology looks way more advanced compared to Ripley's day and age. Especially, since Ripley is further in the future. Continuity errors. Retro look in the future should keep a retro look in the past.

I could be completely wrong though I wonder if it's more a matter of saturation. Ridley is making his Alien films and to have another film coming out in the mix might be considered over saturating the markets desires for Alien films. Alien films have never been huge box office movies. Successful, yes but from what I've heard it isn't astronomical. It's likely that the more money put into Alien films, coming out in close proximity to one another might not be considered a great investment financially - and that's ultimately what the studios seem to consider most important.

this could be a conflict between two sorta same movies being released at the same time. it'll be redundant or one will triumph over the other. remember when Super and KickAss came out at almost the same time? James Gunn was obviously not ripping off Kickass, but as far as how box offices did for the film that triumped.. it was Kickass over Super.
