Another thing: when David and Halloway are talking, David doesn't spike the drink until Halloway says he would be willing to do "anything and everything" to get his answers. I always thought it was David's way of getting permission first.
@jimbobeire
@jimbobeire 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, presumably he had to somehow get around prohibitions on harming humans, so getting Holloway to utter a form of words that could be read as permission to experiment, is a way of doing that. Just like when he misleads or insults humans he does so in a vague manner that can be interpreted in more than one way, rather than straight up lying or insulting them.

nerdlord20 -that’s a really good point that I didn’t notice! I also think his dismissive attitude helped David’s decision along, too. He could just as easily infected one of the security goons. David didn’t like Holloway. Answering the question of creation as ‘because we could’ is dumb and a lie. We create in our image...and to serve us. Sound familiar? It only makes sense that David brings it full circle by doing some creating in this movie and the next of his own.

Максим Щербань so, if you were running, and something was rolling behind you, and there was burning debris falling and exploding to the left and right... you would automatically run left or right, even though the thing rolling behind you (and sheltering you from debris) is slowing down? Did you forget that shortly after it squashed Vickers it came to a stop? So, if she hadn't tripped, she would have outrun it and survived.

jimbobeire are you actually gonna defend something that most critics consider the biggest flaw of the movie, and something that's been a meme since the movie came out, because you at first didn't understand what it meant, and then use the most far-fetched argument you could've made? i think the risk of tripping and being crushed by the ship, or the ship outspeeding you, far outweighs the risk of a piece of debris, of which there werent that many to begin with, randomly falling exactly onto you... and it was going down-hill so how exactly was it slowing down? the ship stopped only because it hit a rock, something they could've never foreseen when they started running, because they weren't in sight of the rock. but hey, that's what we have natural selection for eh.

As how things are, with Disney's plans to make a TV series by Noah Hawley and a movie by Fede Álvarez... I'm pretty sure there won't be a third part directed by Scott. They are starting their own thing with the property... And to be honest, it's kinda sad. The world needs directors with their own ideas and Ridley Scott is one of them. He is 84 years old and soon he'll no longer be among us. Ideas like Prometheus are obviously too risky for Disney comfort zone-y way of approaching to movies... So. That's it, I guess. I'll watch Prometheus from time to time as the -in my opinion- brilliant companion to Alien until I fucking die. And I'll remember how bold Mr. Scott was. And also the producers who supported his vision.

To address your point about unanswered questions, the key difference between Alien and Prometheus is what each film is. Alien is a thriller. Questions about the origins of the space jockey, facehuggers, and xenomorphs don't particularly matter because the movie is about a giant murderous alien stalking the crew of the Nostromo. Prometheus, on the other hand, makes it clear from the beginning that it's all about those big questions. Who are the engineers, why did they create us, why were they going to kill us? Those questions are the very reason why the voyage took place. For the film to not only not provide any answers to any of these questions, but to also introduce a living Engineer and make him nothing more than a big angry murder machine, wasn't a very good call.

To be honest I liked the fact I knew as much as the movie's characters did. Made me connect more with them, instead of having an all knowing spot from which I just expected them to discover the truth. Maybe the weak point of the film is that the protagonist did not insist on finding the answers despite her love for science and the whole lore of creation? Not sure. Got to watch it again. On the other hand, I think most of us would just prioritize surviving such life threatening situations instead of sticking around for the truth. Self preservation is a b**tch

You brought up such a great point towards the end. People are so willing to immediately judge and condemn the script when in fact, the original Alien was leaving viewers just as confused and curious towards everything that viewed. We have too many scholar wannabes twiddling their keyboards to explain how intelligent they are to criticizing movies that don't force feed you every single plot detail. Part of discovering sci fi plots is looking for them yourselves. I do think Prometheus in time will be regarded highly. People need to stop playing God themselves and realize just because you didn't like it, doesn't mean others have to agree.

+tnargtnarud The huge difference between Alien and Prometheus is that Alien is not a pretentious movie. It is a simple sci-fi monster horror movie. IF Prometheus simply tried to be the same thing (since it is also a prequel) then fine. BUT Prometheus tries to be a philosophical movie about the origins of the human race and life etc... This is why Prometheus fails where Alien succeeds. If Ridley wanted to make a philosophical movie, he should have simply made that AND not tried to make a prequel to Alien. On the other hand, if he simply wanted to make an sci-fi monster horror movie prequel to Alien, then avoid all the pseudo-religious-philosophical crap.
@tnargtnarud
@tnargtnarud 9 жыл бұрын
Ct Tc However Ridley wanted to make a prequel, so of course prequels are usually the foundations to the stories after it. So, in a way, the film had already shot itself in the foot. If this was a simple prequel, I'm sure people would be complaining just as much.
@cttc4132
@cttc4132 9 жыл бұрын
tnargtnarud It's possible that "people would be complaining just as much". I wouldn't. As is often the case, prequels screw up because they say what the movie maker wants them to say and not what the original actually said. What I mean is that the movie making process is quite complex and when there is no one, single powerful entity involved there are a lot of compromises which contribute to the end result. When Alien was made Ridley Scott was not a God. Alien was not the result of his singular vision. Now, he wants to make a prequel and say what he really wanted to say in the first movie. Well, he's changed and the process has changed since he is now a movie making God. So the prequel does not jive with the original. Maybe he would have screwed up Alien if he made it now.

Here's my take. Who said the original Engineer that made humanity received his kind's blessing for doing so? What if the creation of humans was never supposed to happen for fear of some form of psionic prophecy? We see the "Alien" image on the walls in one scene. The Engineers knew what this concept was and what was going on. Also, strangely as it sounds, what if the Black Ooze is the same within the cup from the beginning of the movie?

Thats an interesting point. when you think about it, if a human gets exposed to the black goo, horrible mutations occur creating a killer organism. same with the worms. If an engineer ingests the goo, this leads to the catalyst for all life on Earth. could this mean that they consider life on earth to be a horrible mutation that needs cleansing?

Except there is a deleted scene that shows several of the Engineers dropping off the one that ultimately sacrificing himself for the creation of life. Also, think about what we're saying. The Engineer drinks the goop and turns himself into millions of chains of DNA. Based on the evolutionary theory 4 billion years need to pass for single cell life organisms to evolve into today's human race. As smart as those aliens were there is no way they could predict the eventual evolution of humans.

She adds a lot thematically. She represents the negative traits of humans (fear, jealousy, coldness). It sounds dry when I put it that way, but prometheus is a sci fi about mankind and not just spaceships flying around. The biggest problem is that people compare it too much to Alien, and as an Alien film, Prometheus would've been shit(there aren't as many likable characters,horror or xenomorphs and those were the things most people liked about alien, not the space jockey sci-fi aspect of it).

It’s theorized that the mural is actually of the deacon creature that is shown in this movie when the chest burster comes out of the engineer, whether that is true, who knows, but it would stand to reason that the engineers probably knew what would happen should they get infected by the black goo themselves , so they might of made that mural as a sort of warning to be utterly cautious around the weaponized black goo that was stored on the ship.

The 'facehugger' and alien in this film aren't the first of their kind, early on in the movie there's a picture of an alien and a facehugger on the wall inside the base, meaning they must have already existed, I think the huge tentacle things completely unrelated to the facehuggers we know, and the alien at the end was just shoehorned in there because people wanted to see it

+Jeam My first thought was that Engineers was on earth way earlier then our expedition (thats why our main characters found these marks and signs on the cave walls). They created humans as a breed for xenomorfs... thats why they knew how they look before our so called first xenmorf was seen by the end of a movie (the pictures inside the engineer's ship). They used these aliens as a weapon for they'r own good and needs. Thats why that ship was targeted to earth, to create another batch of xenomorf warriors. Pile of dead bodys might be, a contamination issue with the black goo so they kiled almost every one on the ship and piled them up (might be something with the agression after direct contact with the goo). Im not sure but i think there was a scene that the 2 lost technicians sad that dead bodys had theyr chests riped off... or i might be wrong.

I hate the complaint about the Zenomorph looking different and that its not explained.The zenomorph looks different because the alien looks different depending on the host it breeds on. For example the alien in Alien, Aliens and Resurrection looks different to the one in Alien 3 because in Alien 3 the first host was a dog. This changed the Alien as it ran on all fours. S the alien in Prometheus looks different because it's host was an Engineer.

The more I watch Prometheus the more I love it. Everything always looks so great and fresh when I re watch it. I think Viccars was a replicant. Which is not the same thing as a cyborg. That would easily explain her strength and something about her manner reminds me lot of Rachel from Blade Runner. I think Prometheus follows in the footsteps of 2001 and Blade Runner as far as its ambiguity is concerned. I really liked your vid. Thanks for sharing Mr Stuckman.

We, Alien fans, hated it because Prometheus just rehashed Alien ideas. Which made it boring and totally predictable. The only point I felt tension was when the woman was performing surgery on herself. Otherwise, I always knew how every scene was going to end... Not seeing any Alien movie is the reason you loved Prometheus; because it was all new to you.

The biggest problem for me was that they send the dumbest scientist they could find on a trillion dollar mission. Just a few examples. They all take of their helmets after they found out the air is breathable, apparently not knowing that their could be deadly microbes in the air as well. The guy responsible for creating a map gets lost. The Biologist wants to cuddle with something that resembles a cobra and hisses at him. They are just so unlikable overall. That's just lazy writing tbh. They could have had the same effect with dialogs like: "Red shirt science officer number 1, please investigate that alien snake thing... Oh my god he got eaten, who would have guest that that dangerous looking creature is actually dangerous."

Some of your conclusions are not correct: - the planet at the beginning was not Earth, it was an example of how the Engineers were creating life; - David's actions were not independent. Everything he did was the result of Weyland's orders. Except watching Shaw's dreams. That was part of his programming. He was programmed to better understand humans and he believed watching dreams was the way to do that. - Vickers was not a robot and there's no indication in the movie that she was. Her behavior towards Weyland was because she had a grudge on him. Weyland wanted a son and not a daughter so he disowned her and they had a fallout. - Vicker's apartment was not actually hers. Those were Weyland's quarters. Therefore, the medical pod calibrated for males. - the creature that comes out of the Engineer body was not a Xenomorph Other notes: - the Engineers' purpose was to create Xenomorphs, therefore the mural in their temple showing a Xenomorph in a crucifixion pose. And they were all dead because they had a Xenomorph outbreak. - the Engineers did not want us dead, they wanted to "transform" us into Xenomorphs since they seemed to worship them to some degree. But I agree with your final conclusion. Prometheus' point was to make the audience ask questions and many things were left out on purpose. And considering that people still debate the movie, more than 2 years after its release, proves that it was not a bad movie and definitely not a failure. People actually have to think during the movie and not just watch the cool scenery and the pretty blone girl.

Adrian Mantsch How do you know the creature at the end wasn't a Xenomorph? It sure did look like one
@refulgent_fanta
@refulgent_fanta 9 жыл бұрын
ShinyUrsaring The creature is a Deacon, not a Xenomorph. And, although it looks A LITTLE like one, there are significant differences: born with both arms and legs (unlike the xenomorph), lacks the inner jaw and it has instead pharyngeal jaws (like the Goblin shark), the head is a different shape, it's using its sharp head to tear its way out of a host instead of bursting through the chest. The biggest difference is that the Xeno is created by a facehugger and the Deacon is made by a Trilobite. Also, even Ridley Scott stated it was never supposed to be a Xenomorph. If you look at the Engineer body pile, they have holes in their chests, which indicates they were impregnatd by facehuggers and killed by chestbuster (Xenomorph infant). The last Engineer was not killed by a facehugger/chestbuster. Also, as indicated by the mural (of a Xenomorph drone) in the Engineer temple, the Xenomorphs already existed by that time.

Adrian Mantsch -How do you know the planet is not Earth? It was explained the Engineers made life on Earth and the opening shows them making life on a planet. The planet looks like Earth, there aren't two moons or something like that. -Weyland ordered David to purposely infect a crewmember with alien goo? Because that would lower their chances of success. -I agree with you about Vickers. -How do you know it is not a Xenomorph? It is established their appearance changes depending on the host. -It is never called a Deacon (granted, it is never called a Xenomorph either).
@refulgent_fanta
@refulgent_fanta 9 жыл бұрын
Schwarzer Ritter - It was never stated that the planet in the beginning is Earth, so why should we assume it is? - no, Weyland didn't order David to infect a crew member but he did order him to further investigate the goo, hoping it would bring him immortality. So David thought the best way to do that is to test it on a living subject. And he did get permission, in a way. Because before infecting the drink, he asks "what would you do to filfil your mission?" (or something like that. And the answer was "anything". - It's not a Xenomorph because it doesn't look like one. And the name "Deacon" comes from Ridley Scott. Xenos already exist by that time because the other engineers were killed by facehuggers (we see the bodies with holes in their chests and the temple had a mural showing a Xenomorph). Also, Xenomorphs are implanted by a facehugger, the Deacon is implanted by a Trilobite. Xenos burst open your chest, the Deacon cuts his way out with his head. Xenos are born without arms and legs but the Deacon is born with a full set of limbs. Xenomorphs have a second set of inner jaws, Deacons have a jaw similar to the real life Goblin Shark - it jsut inhinges and moves forward instead of being a completely separate system.

Totally agree on how this will be viewed differently in the future. To me, the BEST thing in this movie is the continual sense of mystery and tension. It makes you pay attention even more and look for any clue at all. It's okay that we just don't get ALL the answers. A little mystery is a good thing. The sense of this in this movie somewhat reminds me of what I feel when I watch 2001 which I'd guess served as an inspiration in some ways.

If you watch it again, pay attention to a few things that never seem to register in Shaw's mind. Note the dates of all the cave paintings she shows in the briefing, and compare that with her idea that these things planned to wipe us all out 2000 years ago. Then note that there is an airtight tunnel leading from the cargo bay of the ship to the chamber of urns in the Dome. The air is perfectly breathable for humans. Now note that the Engineer wasn't wearing a helmet when he crossed the surface of that moon to get from his crashed ship to reach the Lifeboat and confront Shaw. Then ask yourself. Was Shaw correct in her conclusions, or should we, the viewers see her as an unreliable narrator?

I'm sure you already learned this by now but the trilobite and the deacon aren't the first ever Facehugger and Xenomorphs. In the room with the giant statue head there are multiple murals showing the alien egg with a xenomorphs holding it as well as the deacon mural in the crucifix pose shows engineers being facehugged on it. Also there's no way these creatures could be the first. Only 30 or so years have passed in between Prometheus and Alien that they couldn't evolve within that very short amount of time.

I enjoyed the film, but I think comparing its ability to "raise questions" to Alien is a tad lofty. Alien did a good job subtly hinting at foreboding but extraneous events throughout its story without dwelling on them too much. Much of Alien's now famous lore was not central to the story. It was primarily a slasher movie, with an interesting diegesis. Conversely, Prometheus' entire plot has to do with the origins of humanity, how and why humans were created, and under what circumstances. About 1/2 way through, it switches gears and becomes a sort of monster thriller, seemingly forgetting about the importance of the previous questions it's characters spent considerable time asking.

I enjoyed watching Prometheus the first time I watched it, and I think it is a brilliant movie. Here is what I understand about the movie: it's called Prometheus, but what is the allegory of fire in the movie? Well from Weyland, we can expect the "fire" to be the key to being immortal. I also think the engineers were trying to become immortal as well. (Noomi's line: who made them?) the black goo was not intended to be a weapon. It was supposed to be an elixir of life. But in a twist of fate, instead of being a key to life, it is actual the key to death. (The opening scene of the engineer falling into the waterfall is actually a failed experiment, he wasn't supposed to die.). It is important to remember that the engineers are looking to be immortal, that is why they created humans, trying to rearrange their own DNA to make a more perfect version of themselves, but they failed.
@calebrobinson6406
@calebrobinson6406 9 жыл бұрын
Weyland saw the crew as expendable for him to be immortal. (Vicker's line: "that makes you employees" could have also added, "which makes you expendable." So the fire is immortality. The allegory of Prometheus instead of just being the name of the ship also refers to David. He plays with the goo, something that he doesn't understand and ends up destroying the mission. He had no idea it was poison, he was trying to see if it was the elixir to give to Weyland. The capsules in the room are the engineer equivalent to samples in test tubes. Which is why they kept them, but kept them sealed. We do the same with dangerous viruses on earth.

+Caleb Robinson I think Ridley Scott set a lot of traps in this movie to throw people off the scent. A lot of things can be interpreted in the simplest most obvious references, and using familiar myths, rather than looking for more subtle clues. There is another more recent, but also famous story that contains the name Prometheus, and it is hinted at visually in the movie, and throws an entirely different light on the events.

@fuckyou7037
@fuckyou7037 8 жыл бұрын
Hey Caleb. I think you got something wrong about Prometheus. The Engineer in the beginning is not killed by a failed self experiment. Nor is the black goo the elexir of life. The Engineers are like very high advanced beings, almost like gods. Genetically perfect or almost perfect. They all look the same, they are so highly evolved and probably have overcome the hate, hunger, unequiallity and other things that plague lesser evolved social beings, like humans. They represent the TITANS in the premetheus mith.The engineer in the beginning looks like a monk almost. He is performing a ritual. It's plausible to assume, that, since the engineers are so highly advanced, their conciousness is too. Their feelings as well. They no longer aim for "wordly" motiviations like competing in the survival of the fittest nature of the humans, reproduction, power, eating and shit. They aim for higher goals. SO... the Engineer in the beginning is SACRIFICING himself by drinking the black goo, to disintegrate himself and bring the very first pieces of biology or dna to this world (probably the earth). It is a scientific fact, that even today scientists don't know how biology started on earth. How did chemistry (atoms, elements) transformed to biology (dna, biological cells, bacteria, live) etc. SO... the first scene in Promtheus is an fictional explenation of how DNA or BIOLOGY made it's way on earth. You also asked about what the allegory to the FIRE is in Prometheus. It is the BLACK GOO. The black goo is something either the Engineers made or got ahold of by optaining it (maybe from an even higher form of BEINGS. Those might resemble the GIANT HEAD they seems to worship). Just image how powerful or goldlike such an entity or form of entitis must be if the Engineers worship it. But that's just speculation. FACT is the black goo is a very highly potent substance that messes with biology in a big way. It seems to be some sorf of DNA/evolution enhancer. Thats why the worm grows into a huge alien worm. Thats why when humans eat it they uncontrolably mutate and become kind of zombies. ITs a dangerous substance the engineers themselves tread with the utmost care. Probably the most powerful they have. Black goo can create, preserve life or kill it. It is a allegory to the FIRE in Prometheus, which in turn is an allegory to KNOWLEGE/SCIENCE for humans. Knowledge,Science can too be used to create, presever or to kill and therefore always poses a threat to humanity (for example atomic bombs, biological super weapons, DNA manipulation like cloning and shit). I hope what I wrote made sense to you. English is not my first language, haha.

I see people overlooking something. The Engineers, all but one, on LV-223 died 2000 years ago, according to the test done on the head before it blew up. They were also planning to return to Earth at that time, presumably with bad intentions. However, the Engineers visited earth many times after the creation and interacted with humans. So at one point they were ok with us. Why the change? Jesus was crucified 2000 years ago, whom Shaw believed in (and was the only one who escaped, btw). With the religious overtones one would think that number could be very significant, or a coincidence. A coincidence like that in this film seems unlikely.

Okay, look into it, because you're bang on the money, and they did actually address it. Apparently, they intended to have the religious overtones far, FAR more extreme, to the point that Jesus was an Engineer, and they were ticked off we crucified him, and they wanted to expressly make the point that the engineers created us. Now, what happened? They bottled it. Totally. They were afraid religious folks would get incredibly offended, and while Ridley Scott is an aggressive aetheist who's anti-religion and loud about it, he doesn't need hassle from religious people, they'll ruin your life if they get a carrot to chase haha. So under the many re-writes to the script, they removed the overt "Engineers are God and Jesus", he's quoted as saying "that felt a bit too on-the-nose", and they added that little line from Noomi Rapace about if the engineers created us blah-blah.."who created them?" They'll probably never address this, judging by their fear of the audience's reaction, you'll likely look back after 3 films and they won't have addressed it, because it was a part of the original script and they'll leave it as a coincidence instead. Hell, before he killed her off they intended Vickers to be an android, but script changes left that totally untouched. Still, well done for noticing on your own, that's worth a thumbs-up by itself :)
@Rodgerinho
@Rodgerinho 10 жыл бұрын
Andiamo P Well we know that they changed it specifically to avoid offending people, that was in an interview, so if you say not running, I disagree, or at least, he didn't want to offend. And that means more $$$, which is a big thumbs up! :D (He may well have been told to remove it) However, I do agree he's trying to be ambiguous, no arguing with that whatsoever. With regards the Jesus Engineer, I feel it's likely we'll never explicitly hear in the film that Jesus was an alien. You never know. But, you're right enough, that's a fairly big hint, the time is more than coincidence, even if they don't acknowledge it. However, by not acknowledging something so relevant and ground-breaking, they also inherently deny it, because it's such a massive revelation you can't fail to have an opinion on it. It just makes the characters look moronic if they don't address the point. I agree the Engineer coming to kill her was odd. I don't know why they included a supposedly higher-intelligence lifeform if all they were going to do was have it charge around like a beast killing everything in its path. They might as well have stuck to the Xenomorph, they didn't take any great strides forward, same plot, different skin.

Rodgerinho What are your sources ? Because I call bullshit on the jesus theory, no idea where people get it from. Why the hell would they just suddenly decide they're gonna wipe out the human race because of jesus with one overly dangerous and overly complicated method? Its clear that the goo is not a method of extinction, but a method of TRANSFORMATION. I think its almost clear that humans were created in order to be breeding grounds and food for future xenomorphs. I mean, that parts a bit more open, but the jesus thing I'll never buy. Engineers are GIANT creatures, that are PALE; with dark eyes, and baloon muscles. If jesus looked like that, I'm pretty sure we'd notice. And also, makes NO sense for them to erradicate ALL LIFE ON EARTH because "they killed jesus AKA one of us". It's just retarded.

"The only reason humans created AI is because they could." But that's not why AI is and these theoretical androids are created. There are practical applications for thinking machines and androids. Just as in Blade Runner, androids are used for all sorts of tasks from mining to soldiers. So to say that "we" developed AI and androids simply because we could is a cop-out. It's a way to explain why the engineers created humans (and all life on earth) without explaining it. And the medical pod was calibrated for males only because it was intended for Weyland, not Vickers. This was foreshadowing that Weyland was aboard the ship.

Sure AI, computers and cell phones are not necessary to survival, but they weren't superfluously created out of arrogance. Even though certain tech is not essential to life, it is still developed for a reason, even if that reason isn't survival.

*Here is my theory:* The engineers created humans, whether it was by accident or intentional doesn't matter. They wanted to destroy humans for some reason, whether it was because they didn't like the route they took, or some liked humans but others didn't, doesn't matter. The question of why is a question that might be answered in a sequel. What we know is the engineers created humans, and later on wanted to destroy them. I think, that the engineers created the black liquid, which holds the DNA of all Alien life forms. When this black Liquid comes in contact with a life form, it changes it, like the worm and the humans, turning into a stronger version of itself, but more violent. So why was the engineer vaporized after ingesting the black liquid at the beginning of the movie? Either it was a sacrifice, or he was being tested, and wasn't strong enough to co-exist with the new cells living in his body. This question is also left for the sequel. *My theory is*, the engineers used this black liquid, and experimented on themselves. Most likely, they created a face hugger, maybe in a similar way it was shown in this movie. First infecting a male, then injecting a female with the parasite, and then removing the parasite from the female. Then, they latched the parasite onto an engineer, and it created the first queen of the Xenomorph species. The shrine in the ship represented the traits of the Xenomorph, so it obviously existed for a long time before this movie. Now this leaves the question, what was that ship doing on LV-426 in Alien, what came out of the pilot's chest, and how did the eggs get their? *My theory is*, a face hugger accidentally escaped and latched into an engineer. Not knowing the effects, the engineer flew a ship out to space, and either crashed or landed on LV-426, when the queen burst out of his chest while he was in the chair. Then, when the queen grew, it melted a hole in the ground, till it came to the endless cavern we see in Alien, and laid it's eggs there. Now, either this was the first queen ever, or the Xenomorph still existed before this. If this was the first queen ever, then how would the engineers know about it in order to make a shrine for it? So probably, it existed before this, and this was an accident. Either way, this ship and pilot were much older than the events of Prometheus, since the pilot in the chair was fossilized. The face hugger we see in Prometheus, is actually called a trilobite. It is much larger than the face huggers we know. I don't think this was the first face hugger, but in fact it was the first of it's kind, the trilobite. Why was it so large? Probably because it came out of human this time. The DNA in the black liquid acts randomly, and has different outcomes with different mixes. Then, the Alien that hatches from the engineer, isn't a Xenomorph at all. It is a different breed of species called the Deacon. (This is actually true, and was confirmed by Ridley Scott). Whether this was the first queen of the Deacon species is unknown, yet. But what we do know is the Deacon and Xenomorph share the same DNA and origin, they were just different results of different cross breeding. The Deacon we see in Prometheus is large, because it comes out of an engineer. Most likely, if the trilobite infected a human, it would create a similar Deacon, but smaller. *In conclusion*, my theory is, both the Xenomorph and Deacon are results of cross breeding. They share the same DNA which originates from the black liquid, but are different because they were created by a different parasite and host. A parasite that is created by engineers results in a Xenomorph, and a parasite that is created by a human results in a Deacon. Another thing that backs up my theory is, the Xenomorph has a more mechanical structure, while the Deacon has a more organic structure. Probably, because the engineers have a mechanical structure, the result of the Alien that is created from them will have a mechanical structure as well, and because the humans have an organic structure, the Alien that is created from them will have an organic structure as well. The embryo mimics it's host, but it's origins influences it's structure the most. The first stage of both species is the black liquid, so they both share the trait of black skin, double jaw/extended jaw, long shaped head, and skeleton shaped body. The second stage is either the engineer or the human. The results from an engineer is the Xenomorph, and the results from a human is the Deacon. This is my theory on how they were created. But it has been confirmed that the Deacon and Xenomorph are different breeds. Hopefully, in a sequel they will answer more of these questions and show more of the Deacon. In my opinion, it would have been much simpler for Ridley Scott to just have shown the engineer wake up with the face hugger dead at his side. He then gets up, and runs to another ship, and takes off. Then, while he's in the chair with the space suit, you see the queen Alien burst out of his chest, and the ship crashes on LV-426, and you see it the way it was in Alien. Then, you see the queen crawl out, and melt a hole in the ground with it's spit, and you see it arrive at the endless cavern we see in Alien. Then we would have understood, that this was how the queen was created, this was how the ship crashed on LV-426, this is why the fossilized pilot had a hole in his chest that looked like something burst out from the inside, and this is why it was there, and laid all the eggs in that cavern. If the entire movie stayed the same, but only the ending was changed to that, everything would have made a lot more sense. It would have showed that the Xenomorph species was the result of a freak accident, and shows how totally random nature is. But he decided to create a whole new species. So I hope he does something with it.

Not knocking your theories at all, I love them. But why did ingesting the black liquid and being attacked by the trilobite (glasses guy) turn them into the same type of mutants instead of birth a male-human-made alien? I think if I, myself were to be attacked by an ancient alien, or that alien's science experiment, i'd die the most agonizing death ever imagined, not get superpowers like evil x-men. I dont think a human body would be able to hold onto and use that virus/alien attack and turn it into something like it did. We'd be more fragile compared to other beings. I'd believe it if it were to happen to engineers who appear obviously stronger tougher and more hardy. I'd just like to read what you'd make of it.
@_Master_Wolf
@_Master_Wolf 10 жыл бұрын
***** Well the worm that attacked the glasses guy wasn't a trilobite. It was a worm that mutated by coming in direct contact with the black liquid. And obviously the black liquid has different effects on different life forms. I don't think it has anything to do with how tough the life form is, but rather if the cells in the life form can co exist with the new cells.

***** But human DNA is shown to actually be the one engineer gene that survives the Mutagenic Death virus. I suspect that is why the engineer sacrificed himself to try to locate a cure. But the process accidentally created a new species (us) that did more and could actually survive the reconfiguration of its genetic structure and remain alive. Leading to a far greater threat of a potential host species for the virus.

silentwolfSW97 that is a mind blowing theory haha. yep the fact that Ridley Scott created another species is at best confusing, since this film is supposed to be sort of an Alien Origins movie. We know that the Xenomorphs that have been terrorizing Ripley are Xenomorphs and not Deacons. In all the subsequent Alien films I would suppose they are all Xenomorphs. So it's kinda hard at this stage to pinpoint how the Alien Queen came into existence in the first place. I really hope they explain things better in the sequel, if there's one.

also, how do we reconcile all these things with AVP as well? Technically in AVP movie, they showed that Aliens were the eternal foes of Predators since a long time ago when there weren't even humans. So this little part here makes things even more confusing because the events of Prometheus took place in the future. Unless the Aliens were already existing since a long time ago then it would kinda make sense. But if so, it makes sense that a superior race such as the Predator would have some link or conflict with the Engineers so ...

There needs to be a profound enough reason to create humans to justify the sacrifice of the engineer at the beginning. You don't say you create life just because you can if it involves your own death. That's not a good enough reason. The screenplay is all over the place, like it's having an existential crisis. This film doesn't know what it wants to be. In trying to be many things, it becomes nothing. It's a bunch of cool individual parts that do not work as a whole.

+Eric Chamberlain If you rewatch it, and treat Shaw as an unreliable narrator, you may notice an entirely different interpretation of what this _Ship_ _of_ _Fools_ discovers on LV 223. Shaw thinks it's a live action version of the book of Genesis, but there are hints in there that it's got more in common with a more modern myth. In fact, the end scene is tragically comic if her conclusions are incorrect.

I liked Prometheus, the lore behind the movie is very interesting, especially the reasons why the engineers suddenly became hostile to their creations. At the same time, I am deeply disappointed at Covenant and the way it treated Shaw. I wish I could see more of her... I wish they didn’t cut the dialogue between the Engineer and the humans, I also liked the scene where “God” almost touched his creation “Adam”. If they had greeted him with more respect and not outright demonstrate their violence towards Shaw, maybe the Engineer would’ve entertained them further... so many missed opportunities :(

I agree about Shaw, I feel like that was a really poor decision and she could have legit been this new wave of Alien movie’s “Ridley”. Our main character in these movies, trying to stop David if need be or actually exploring the universe/galaxy looking for her answers that she was obsessed with. She had plenty of growth and plenty of directions to have.

Clark Kent This is wrong, but close to right. In the deleted scene the engineer asks David why Weyland deserves to live and Weyland tells the engineer that he deserves to live for what he has created, that David, his creation, is perfection. Then the engineer picks up David, and rips off his neck and then throws him at Weyland. Which implies that the engineer is indeed mad, and is showing them that their creation is far from perfect and is frustrated with their ignorant overconfidence. It has nothing to do with David being an abomination, it has everything to do with their own creations, humans, being cocky and thinking they understand everything when they know very little.

You're right about how this movie was always made to have a sequel, maybe even a trilogy, but what disturbs me is how Alien Covenant doesn't really answer any of the excellent questions posed by this film. We don't really get to learn more about the engineers and their motives, nor do we get a hint as to who made them. These questions don't NEED to be answered but I would really love to see a follow-through with that story line as opposed to finding out how the derelict came to be on the planet in the original Alien. It's also much more interesting to me than to see another Michael Fassbender one man show. Don't get me wrong... I love him, but Scott posed some great philosophical and theological questions in this film that he now doesn't seem too concerned to be answering.

1. I think Prometheus pretty much explained that xenomorphs are created by a complex evolution between 3 different cross species. I assume there was probably a civil war happening from the flashback sequence (or read my 2nd opinion below). The engineers made life on earth but it took too much hell of a time for human to get to where we are now. They decided to create bio-weapons like the parasitic life forms. (its just like how Weyland Corps. wanted Xenomorphs to serve under human). The Moon System in Alien 1 was a experimental colony and that engineer also have his chest busted open, let just say it was a queen, laid eggs on the site and bounced. The distress signal is presumably set up by the engineer. In a way it sacrificed itself to further continue the experiment in which it requires human genetic coding to create the perfect xenomorphs. The original one seen in Prometheus is no where near perfection i.e the tails and 2nd jaw are missing lethal characteristics. I think one of the biggest question left unanswered is that we don't exactly know how the xeno eggs are made. anyways these are my theories about this creative sci-fi film hats off to Ridley Scott. 2. i.m.o Predators could rape everyone asses in this movie. considering that they kill aliens for fun, training, and collecting trophies. I mean just watch Predators 2's ending. On the trophie cabinet wall, there is probably a Engineer's skull hung along with other alien fossils from Starship Trooper or some shit LOL. Their technology is much more advanced than anything. A interesting perspective of mine suggest that the Engineers are actually A. running away from the Predators galactic tribe, B. Perfecting evolution in bio-weapons a.k.a xenomorphs. The funniest shit would be that, the Engineers actually succeeded. A cross breed Predalien, which fucked up the entire crew and predator warship. (I assume the King fled away from a escape pod, he ain't stupid.) Sorry if this is hella long but i am smoking up while i am penning this down.

What a great review! I, too, am a HUGE Prometheus fan. This review's strong ending was delightful. I think I can take a crack at answering some questions raised in this review. 1. Why a male-only med pod? It was for Weyland. Vickers played the commanding officer, but the most important member of the crew was, without a doubt, Weyland. 2. The Holocaust Painting. They said that the bodies had exploded chests. I think this insinuates outbreak. The captain thought the same. The decapitated engineer racing to the sanctuary implies that maybe it was a safe room. This also would mean that Shaw's facehugger was not the first. The engineer's xenomorph was not the first as well. We can tell that it wasn't the first xenomorph from the crucified xenomorph mural in the vase room. It was an intended result of their tinkerings. 3. Now this one is just opinion, but I thought it would be awesome if Earth was only selected because of David's tampering of the flight navigation system. The engineer could then deduce where the threat came from (humans), and was going to head there to wipe them out. 4. Captain Janek knows it's a military installation due to his experience explained in a deleted scene. 5. You can also find out what David said to the engineer in a deleted scene. However, taking the mystery out of this one was a bummer for me. I liked not knowing much more. 6. Like you said, we don't need to know why. Could we even know why? These engineers are alien, and therefore have alien desires, alien emotions, and alien motivations. How could we even begin understanding their motives with our primitive meat brains?
