Welcome back to The UnPopular Opinion! The UnPopular Opinion features different takes on films that either I hated, but that the majority of film fans loved or vice versa. We have always hoped this column will promote constructive and geek fueled discussion. Now, with us entering the visual world, you can get pissed off in a whole new medium!
In space, no one can hear you scream but that isn't such a bad thing. All of the films in the ALIEN franchise after James Cameron's sequel have gotten a bad rap or have been unfairly compared to Ridley Scott's original. But, that often discounts some truly creative cinematic experiences. Case in point: ALIEN: RESURRECTION. Directed by an art-house filmmaker and taking the series in a bold direction, ALIEN: RESURRECTION has long been a maligned chapter in the ALIEN series and this video is here to set the record straight.

I honestly love Resurrection. It seemed a logical step forward and fit the way that a lot of campy science fiction films were going at the time towards a more dark and gritty direction, and adding in the body horror elements made it really interesting. I would have loved to see another film with the Hybrid version of Ripley.

He is Chucky and has been in tons of horror franchises and his creepy serial killer personality scientist. Not that he was a serial killer but umm that dude definitely experimented on animals as a kid lol. Ron Perlman was great even that black guy from CSI was good. The general guy the dude screaming what's inside me and Ripley telling him that the one asshole scientist they saved put an alien inside him was awesome. The hybrid clone Ripley with acid blood. Wtf is wrong with people. Alien 3 is the one that should have been better. What the fuck did they do? She went through all that trouble to save newt for her to die like that fucking ridiculous. I had just turned 11 years old when I went to go watch Alien: Resurrection with my dad when it released in the theater. It was a good father/son outing, but leaving the movie, I didn't know how to feel about the it. By that point, I loved the xenomorphs and knew all about them, but the Newborn legit freaked me out. My first interaction with the movies was when I stayed home sick from school one day when I was 10 years old and Aliens came on TV. The movie blew my little 10 year old mind, especially the ending fight with the queen and Ripley in the power loader. I went to school and told my friends about it at the school lunch table, but my friend Daniel said that there were more movies and that Ripley died in Alien 3, but that there was another one in the works. My dad bought the whole series on VHS as separate tapes from the local Wal-Mart and I think he wanted to nurture my more mature tastes in movies at the time. Alien 3 made me depressed before I knew what depression was; there I was as a little 10 year old having existential thoughts because my hero Ripley was dead. Then, I got excited after seeing all the marketing hype and the trailers and movie posters all over and that's when my dad and I went to go see it. It was a fun experience on the big screen. I just watched it yesterday, having pulled out my old Alien Quadrilogy DVD set that I bought with my money I had earned from mowing lawns in 2003 and decided to see what other people thought of it. I have these weird, fond memories of the movie now. It looks like a music video from around the year 2000, has Joss Whedon humor, it's gross, has great creature design, interesting concepts, has great visual design (the Auriga looks great, IMO), and the music is pretty good too. It's in this weird place in my heart where it came out at the right time for my pre-teen juvenile interest and I'll always have a soft spot for it.

Very good points there. I really enjoyed this movie when it came out. It's true it has too much of Jeunet's quirkyness to feel like an Alien movie, but it had great action scenes, some cool characters and great casting, besides some interesting themes. I think the hybrid, even though a bit funny, was also terrifying. That last scene when he kills future Tuko just for fun, with that creepy monkey smile, that's the stuff of nightmares. And anything with Brad Dourif and Ron Pearlman will alway be worth a watch. How come Jo Blo has such good professionals as you are and then has this unfunny amateur man-children like the lame guy that does the WTF happened to actors (not movies, those are good too)?

The dark humor of Whedon's script and the surreal quirkiness of Jeunet make this like a comic book version of an Alien film. After three very serious entries the tonal shift is quite jarring which is probably why so many dislike it. It's got plenty of flaws too, but I think overall it's a fun ride. Weaver is great as always and it's got Ron Perlman and Brad Douriff, so what's not to like?

Fantastic, daring review! I really think we all were waiting for an Aliens-redux(Aliens-2) so much so that most of the fans didn't appreciate what Resurrection was trying to be and do: it's own self-referential, horror satire. Resurrection has more in common w/Cronenberg's "The Fly". It's a more straight up Scientific Lab Horror film like The Fly was in the sense that it has to deal with the horrors of scientific greed & forbidding, boundary-breaking research. It's also all about outsiders that aren't accepted in the inner circle: Ripley-8, Call, the Newborn, the new hybridized Xenomorph hive. I really like that aspect of the film. It's completely different than the others.

If you think back on Ripley's disgust of and fear of going back to the planet where she first met the Alien, and now she has a clone offspring is weird and scary and sad. To be forced to feel all these emotions at the same time...just brilliant! The under water scene...scary as hell, and shockingly surprising. Ripley's emotional attachment and her inner fight with those feelings was cool. Its so far better than Alien 3, the franchise shud make that one disappear.

The depth of treatment for Synthetics, the questions about whether it's even a good thing being human with the most heroic characters being only vaguely human... The xenomorph hybrid Ripley now occupying a grey zone between two species and actively given a choice as to which she chooses. Also she's a consummate badass, I wanted her abilities.

I always liked "Resurrection." I walked out of the theater MUCH more satisfied than when I first saw "Alien 3" (and I still prefer it to that one). Yeah, there's a bit too much comedy, but...it's got an interesting story, fantastic visuals, and I don't care what anyone says - that damn Newborn is creepy as Hell. That little "cooing" sound it makes. *shivers* Stuff of nightmares.

I liked Alien, Aliens, & Resurrection equally for different reasons. Alien for the horror, Aliens for the action, & Resurrection cause it didn't take itself too seriously...and I thought Ripley getting some of the Xenomorph abilities was kinda cool. Didn't really care for Alien 3...the whole movie was depressing as hell

I never understood the hate this movie got, i liked it, liked the style of the movie, by a great French Director who was probably shafted by 20th Century Fox Studio, just like Fincher before him. The City of Lost Children is great, and stars two actors from Alien Resurrection Ron Pearlman & Dominic Pinon.

Alien: Resurrection turns 25! I remember catching part of it on TV then buying the whole set on VHS Better than part 3 It's stupid but a lot of fun I like Winona Ryder despite Nostalgia Critic not being a fan of her acting Ron Pearlman's actually one of my favorite parts of the movie and I'm happy Sigourney Weaver was able to come back wrapping things up despite her insistence on doing it They also give the Ripley character something cool by binding her DNA with the xenomorphs She brings this attitude to the surface, while also demonstrating her private grief at her loss of identity (as a result of cloning) Weaver really gives the role her all, playing this new version of Ripley as far more alien than human, and watching her transform her entire presence to capture this new dimension is a bracing reminder of just how talented an actress she remains Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet whom was hailed in France and produced by Joss Whedon pre-Avengers (although they clashed on the script several times) The textures and lighting combine to give the central space station setting a very organic feel, while Jeunet adds humour to lighten the gore and overall tense mood It is a bit over the top with the extreme close ups and there's a sexist undercurrent of the dialogue but thankfully there's still lots of grisly practical effects and only minimal CGI The ending to this day is very polarizing but thought-provoking I'm happy too this wasn't the last 'Alien' installment as we would get 'Prometheus' followed by 'Alien: Covenant'

always had a soft spot for this film, the closest to the 90s Dark Horse comics imo. still think they killed off Michael Wincott and Dan Hedaya too early, a ticking-clock chase film you need all the character you can get and they'd had the best downtime scene of the opening act

Unpopular opinion, Prometheus was amazing. I loved the quirky but rich sci Fi background tale. And covenant was an ok continuation.

Critics are censored and controlled, their opinions are irrelevant ultimately. This film was excellent, funny as hell and great to see Ripley and that wild crew of characters. Thank you for having the fortitude to say what others are afraid to say because of the false popular opinion. I'd rather watch this film than any of the marvel films. It seems people can't even think for themselves and are afraid to step out from the crowdbut perhaps that's conjecture. Great vids sir.

Resurrection plays almost like a nightmare someone is having. A lot of the people assigned to the space station seemed rather dumb. Ripley's line from Aliens seems more appropriate here: Did IQs drop sharply while I was away?

Most of the criticisms are that it's "weird" or strays from the franchise too much. I thought it was so creative, intense, and that lesbo tension was really hot in the mid 90s. It's camp like Texas Chainsaw Next Generation, which gets similar hate.

I agree with your opinion. All Alien movies are different and had good elements (the second one is the best for me). The fourth one was a good one, completely different and more of a horror flick. I just love the whole series ! I'm in serious need of a new one (why not on earth indeed) !

I did like it a lot when I was a teenager. Then realised the weaknesses several years later during a weekend Alien quadrilogy binge. And now I still think it's a great movie after recent fetid abominations like Alien Covenant.

Always liked it, after the travesty of Alien 3 Joss had a long way back and he just about managed it, gave Ripley her happy ending and was a satisfying end to the franchise. Plus the female space pirate had an amazing backside...

Resurrection was the first Alien film I got to see at the cinema. Looking back now it seems so comic book / cartoon-y compared to the original concept. The photography is, however, by far the most artsy and beautiful of all the films.

Preach on! I absolutely hated both of those movies even though I love the Alien franchise. They took them too seriously which makes it hard for me to overlook serious plot holes. I liked all 4 Alien movies (2 and 4 my faves) much more than the 2 new ones. If you're going to take yourself that seriously, you better come correct with logical writing and they failed.
